XJR replacement suggestions.

Right, as is rather well known in this place, I've got a '94 XJR. Time has come for me to want something else.

The way things are going, I'm off to Czech in April for a week or so on a preparatory mission for quite probably moving out there a bit later this year. The Jag was immense fun going out there in September, but it doesn't have the carrying capacity that I'll probably need to get my stuff out there. It's not a huge amount of stuff, but it's more than I'd want to carry in the Jag and the Jag is too clean inside to want to shift loads of stuff in. The Jag hasn't got a towbar either, and I really don't want to fit one. It's also a bit inconspicuous in Czech.

Ideally, I would like something quick, preferably 0-60 in under 8, capable of happy cruising at Autobahn speeds, preferably with leather / ac / cruise, unlikely to need money chucking at it on a regular basis, with a towbar and estate shaped. Minimum of 200 bhp. Capable of towing the Escort + trailer. Or another LPG Rangie.

Nothing Jap unless it's a Subaru Legacy Turbo Estate!

Hmm. I've looked at the 24v Diamond jobs in the past. Maybe. They're quite common in Germany, might be an idea to find one there.

Ex plod T5?

I can get a 54 plate, ex plod T5 for about £2500. Nice enough thing, but I'd be more likely to search out a nicer older T5R.

540i Touring? Not very reliable but....

Hmm, that may be a plan. I'm already scanning the web looking at 850Rs..

This is looking tempting, but I doubt I'd find a buyer for the XJR in time!

You need to do a total Autoshite Top Gear challenge and buy a 8.32 Thema.

I know someone with one, as it happens.

If it was an estate, I'd do a deal..

have you got one eye on resale in the republic?

or are you thinking of keeping it?

Flogging RHD stuff over there is hard to do. If you've owned it in the UK, then you can register it there, but if you do register it there you're not allowed to sell it on in Czech.

i was just thinking about a american motor, a dayvan perhaps, or estate car

loads of space, V8, LHD and appealing to american citizens who make up a large percentage of the inhabitants who may wish to buy a large, fast, fuel guzzling motor

What about ChinaTom's BMW wagon?

you may struggle to 60 in under 8, but it's available, cheap and very good at long journeys.

A well maintained E34 540i is a tough old weapon and bastarding quick too. Fast Benz waggons aren't common - if you had the time/inclination, a W124 300TE with a 500SEL donk'n'trans craned in.

540i auto Touring. That's the way to go. £1500 will buy a decent one. Fast, tall geared and 30 mpg cruising at 80. Manuals are nice but oooober rare.

A Volvo 940 Turbo wagon with £300 for an electronic boost controller if you really want to beat 8 seconds for 0-60.

The 740 turbo (pre 1990) would do it as standard in under 8 sec but tricky to find.

A 940 Sport Estate has a factory fitted Turbo + which gets you to 60 right on 8

ex Plod T5 is a maybe but they can be a bit trashed

I'd go for a 960 Estate or a V90 (if you can find one) - top spec Ovlov - under £1500 V6 engine - quick as you like, great towcars and autobhan stormers

Don't they have straight 6s?

960s and v90s had a straight six - either 2.5 or 2.9. Pete would be wanting the 2.9, I imagine!

The Yank suggestions are on the money; shouldn't be too tough to find a mid-90s Buick Roadmaster Wagon, which has the 5.7 LT1 Corvette motor in it. Say no more! Have words around the American Auto Club North West, as I understand you're in their turf. Otherwise, a decent pickup of a similar age, as American pickups will always sell on their inbuilt cool factor! 8)

GMC/Chevy Sub's worth considering. Even the 4.3 Vortex engines are half decent. I'd recommend the 6.5TD but seem to recall you have an aversion to diesel flavour!
