Silly part prices....

Someone I know dropped a bollock yesterday... he was changing the clutch on a 1.8 (v-tech) honda accord and managed to break the ECT (coolant temp sensor) while putting the gearbox back ::) - it lives on the back edge of the head under the distributor right above the bellhousing.

Car won't run properly without it, there isn't an aftermarket alternative, Honda want £48.35+vat for one. ffs. It's a small brass housing with a thermistor inside it, any other make and it would be under a tenner :(

None on ebay either..... THX HONDA!

I think Intermotor have an online catalogue somewhere? May be worth a look. I got one for a BMW bike from the part number I found.

VW wanted about 65 pounds for a mk.2 Golf aerial

Honda parts are exceptionally pricey - just had the belts done on mine (4 in total - two cam, two aux), waterpump and valve clearances; the cost would have bought a decent runabout! Rocker cover gasket was £36+VAT! Also try £200 for an ABS sensor...of course, these are parts that don't appear on eBay much (the ABS sensors tend to crumble when you lever 'em out) and ECP don't stock aftermarket.

Good job the damn' thing is so reliable really, and the belt change interval is 72k...

I once sold a glow plug timer relay for a Daihatsu Fourtrak, I didn't think that it was much of a bargain at £440 + VAT.

Posted

^ how much??!!?? £440 for a glow plug relay? that IS insane.

Solved the honda sensor situation, found one in a scrapyard this morning, £3. Bargain!

I once asked Mazda for a price for a 626 balljoint- £238+VAT and the usual month lead time. I tried the local motor factor- £10+VAT and it was in stock.

Jag X300 digital clock.

It's a piece of shit, doesn't do anything other than tell the time and light up with the sidelights. The internals probably cost about 20p. It is in a housing that contains one or two switches, so I'll up the 'price to make' to a fiver. The amount of money they spent is obvious, as every X300 you'll see will have a fucked clock...

... because....

Retail price from Jaguar? £177 + vat.

Z31 300zx rear brake discs as an upgrade for the back of my Silvia: £68+VAT each. :(

A set of HT leads for a non turbo Mk3 Toyota Supra, from a Toyota dealer.... £174...

Here's one for you. Suzuki wheel bearing. Factors price £115.

How much from Suzuki? £35! However of course they did not have one in stock!

Two words:

Rimmer Bros.

"This month we have unbelievably cheap special offers! Buy a gearstick gaiter in a colour nobody wants for only £48, and a piece of interior plastic that has never broken for £50!"

I forward the case for Mitsubishi parts, which are known as being the most expensive of the Japanese manufacturers.

I often find VW's prices to be highly reasonable, plus they do like to keep old tat on hand to satisfy people like me. Lock barrel for a 1992 Golf sir? Hang on, I'll just go and get it off the shelf.... £15 for the whole kit and caboodle. They do excel themselves on wheels though, they actually cost around the same per wheel as they did for a set in the options list. £320 for a 16" Golf alloy......

Silly parts prices? look at the coach industry. Want a mirror for your Setra? That'll be £400 sheets please. Other bits just as pricey for what is only double the size of a similar part in a car; try quadrupling the price. Running coaches is not cheap. Running a Setra hurts. Alot.

Posted

I'm glad those Setra mirrors are expensive, they look really daft. Soz!

E34 5 Series wiper rack - the alloy bit that the motor bolts to, and which has the two spindles. A very reasonable £580 with VAT, or the cost of two complete MOT'd E34's.

Bet they sell shitloads.

Anything for an XJ81. Fuels pumps at a grand a pop (you need two) means there will be hardly any of these left on the road within a few years. They will do 120k - 160k then give out. My prediction = less than 50 of these on the roads within 5 years.

Some crazy prices here, but what about things like fiat pandas, surely all the parts on these are cheap, er.......no

CVT clutch £1261.46

CVT gearbox (minus clutch) £3153.72

CVT brush holder £132.48

CVT control unit (tiny little box) £295.15

clock (buzzes from new, and sometimes louder than engine) £56

starter motor £161

anti pollution relay £288.71

radiator fan £85

clutch kit (manual) £120

speed sensor £45

Can't you just bung a Facet pump in there?

That would seem to make sense, either that or run a couple of XJR ones. The R probably uses as much fuel at full pelt anyway.

Are XJR ones any cheaper? I'll have to ask '11-Jags Rob' about alternatives

A few years ago, must have been abought eight years ago. I took a mate to the local Toyota - he wanted a serpentine belt.

£65!

He asked the guy, if that wasn't the answer to his charging problem, what would be.

New alternator was the reply.

OK, how much?

The guy said "I'm going to pull the price up on thes screen then leave. Turn the screen round and look for yourself"

Which they did.

£600! +VAT!

It was the alternator, naturally. Had an auto-electrician replace the diode pack - £8 :)

ford 2.0 pinto water pump - main dealer £67 & vat

I hope you (or I) never need an alternator for the C5. It's not quite that much but it's a dear one, largely because it has a freewheel on it. Why would anybody fit a freewheel to an alternator?
