Be an absolutely fascinating place to have a look round I imagine. Shame some of the cars have been vandalised but still incredibly interesting.

I wonder if there will be a point where they will open the area up?

WOW! How cool would it be to buy a couple of those puppies?

I'm going on holiday near there next month, going to see what I can do about getting a look inside.. Not too hopeful though.

The fella who took these photos has 'good connections' I'm told.

I'd love to have a look around somewhere like that, It reminds me of that other garage with all the Fiats in.

Wow! After years of hearing about this place i'd only ever seen those small, blurry photos taken in the early 90s that have appeared in several places over the years. It's great to see some decent shots at last.

I wouldn't hold out too much hope of getting into this place Milf, I think it's still heavily guarded and any illegal entry would probably result in you getting shot

Aye, I thought I'd never see decent photos of the place either. I am half convinced it's not as well secured/protected as it's made out to be though, I have seen photos of some rather ill maintained perimeter fences.

Don't fancy getting shot mind you, even if it is to look a 'new' 36 year old Mk1 Celica.

Amazing. Like the others I've never seen decent pics of this garage either. Incredible that it was all just left like that. Pump up the tyre, charge the battery and that red Corolla would purr straight out of the door I bet!

Isn't this called the green zone or something. What is the deal behind it? They covered it in a classic magazine years ago. There's an underground car park as well, allegedly.

Been there-fascinating.

Its the demilitarized zone between the previous incumbents (Greek cypriots) and the invading Turks -back inthe 70's.

At Famagusta, on theeastern xoast its broadly half alarge a townwide- left totally as the residents fled.

One of thier poshesthotels (Palm Beach?) is 100yards from thedmz-and the barbed wire.Kindaincongrous, to be sunbathing beside anarmed guard (probBritish-were alarge part of the UNpresence here)

However, in parts of Nicosisia, (he Capital), its barely a street wide..

The original airport is in there too-complete with jets sitting on the apron!

Try Google Earth'ing it-fabulous.

I bet there's some wonderful British Aeroshite sitting there - VC10s, Tridents, Viscounts etc.

I think there is just a lone derelict trident.

That was featured on "From Our Own Correspondent" on Radio 4 about 20 years ago. The BBC bloke got chased out of the area.

Me at the airport 21 years ago!

And another plane for ya too ;)

I tried to get access to the garages but nobody ever seemed to be very interested. I did see some old yank cars within the blue line I'll need to look at google earth and get a location

You don't need to maintain your fences if you have guns.

If they were Turkish troops you might need to be concerned - the Greeks on the other hand were mainly just silly young conscripts padding around in flip flops like a bag of shit most of the time

I had a lot more respect for the Turks during my time in Cyprus even although most of them would probably shag you given half a chance lol

I really enjoyed Northern Cyprus back in the late 80's, it was so different and like going back in time to be honest - especially compared to the South of the Island.

I went back to Cyprus for my 40th birthday in 2005 and was pretty disappointed to say the least :(

Attitudes have changed completely, the people used to be so warm and friendly and the food used to be excellent - it's all full of Eastern Bloc types (who I don't normally have a problem with) and what I'd call a take it or leave it attitude. (fuck 'em I say!)

To be fair, when I went up North it had not changed much at all really and was pretty much as I remembered, other than not having Greeks on the border trying to intimidate people (usually armed with machine guns etc.) not to cross over into Northen Cyprus.

Remember the Greek propaganda about the North being "temporarily inaccessible" due to the Turkish occupation? - what a load of bollocks but most folks took it as genuine ;)

The worst part of the trip was returning to Israel where I was working for a couple of year and beng grilled about going to Northern Cyprus by the Israeli girl (who had married a Greek Cypriot) - asking why we (I was with my GF) wanted to go there in the first place - did we not know people are routinely murdered and go missing up there etc....

I calmly and reasonably politely offered that I'd also heard that Israelis routinely kill Palestinian kids every day of the week too and isn't it terrible

But I digress... if any of you on here are either Greek or Turkish Cypriots or Israeli, please don't take any offence from my comments they are just observations  (I am also a very sarcastic twat  )

The area where I saw the old Yank cars was in the area near a school which was bombed by the Turks during the war but the (supposedly 500lb) bomb did not detonate and pancaked or collapsed part of the building on impact.

If anybody (any Cypriots here?) knows the where abouts or name of the school I can probably narrow things down a bit.

A mate was there in green too, probably before your time though GTD. One of the Paras (?) ND'd a tracer from an SLR and slotted a sheep. I'll ask him about the school.

That second plane looks like an Ilyushian IL28 ........

on second thought the tailplanes are too low..............Hmmm.............

Offence not taken (I am not Israeli) - I do wonder what her reaction to that bit of propaganda was though.

If I said she was "mildy" pissed off I'd be lying

Looks like a dead Standard Vanguard pick up next to the dead fighter jet in gtd's second pic.

Edit: just realised it's not a fighter jet, just bits of a civilian airliner!!

Every time I look at that picture of the aiport interior I start feeling a kind of vertigo :?

first gen 737?

could be, but it looks a bit too small, which I thought it was an IL28 to begin with......

+1

I had my only trip to Cyprus to date in 2001, we went north (via a pointless landing in Turkey prior to take off again) & stayed in a lovely harbour town called Kyrenia. It was one of our best ever holidays & we loved the natural beauty of the unspoilt north (and I loved the abundance of elderly vehicles in use & returned with 9 camera films full of chod!)
