Hyundai i20 Badermatic? problem solved, Fiesta on way! 11/9

As mentioned a while back, Mrs O needs a new motah.

She's got a 206 Verve 1.4 5 door on an '06 55 plate (here's the "wossit wurf" bit), but it's a manual, and her left knee's got dodgy over the last year, so HeatherMills spec gearbox is required.

Looked at brand new, but there's nothing about that we can afford without finance, and she's said no to that.

Saw a High 'n' Dry whilst out and about, and liked the shape (and the colour), and I've got this one on my watch list on the Bay.

Over budget, but thats the right spec and colour.

Also on the list is a Swift, Fiesta, 207, Yaris, Corsa.

Off the list: Mini, fabia, Polo, Clio, Micra, C3, all due to ugliness or emissions.

Any other ideas? Budget is 206 + £2-3k, preferably petrol, and 5 door, although minds can be changed without warning or reason.

She's a bird after all.

EDIT link didn't work, picture below.

I had a 1.2 (manual) i20 as a hire car when I was working in Scotland last week. I liked it.

It's a Hyundai. It'll be pretty good. That is all.

I'd recommend a previous model Suzuki Swift. We picked up our '03' one for £900! Awesome little car, if a little underpowered (it was a 1.0GLS)

I'd be inclined to knock the 207 on the head TBH. And I am a French car lover!

Hyundai should be mega reliable and I actually like these, they are starting to get their styling in order. Reminds me of a Ford from certain angles.

Personally though I'd go for the Yaris as there will be more choice and our local Toyota dealers are VERY good. Took my '93 Corolla for an MOT in 2005 to Toyota Romford and got it back fully valeted for nowt!

Have you considered the Mazda 2? Might find early ones falling in your price bracket?

I'd go for the 3 cylinder version of almost any small car, just because I enjoy the soundtrack.

If you buy it, call it Mrs Doyle.

GO AAN! YOU WILL. GO AAN!

Would you like a cup of tea Father Ted....etc etc

Thanks Parky - I'm guessing the local Toyota garage is Wilson's in Romford?

Seen this on the bay:

£7499 from car Giant....

Panda has been mentioned, but much as I like them, she's said no to that.

Older shape Mazda 2; the newest I've found on ebay are about the same age as Pugsley, and the new one won't have an auto for about 6 months I've recently found out.

This is the same as what we've got, except the mileage on Pugsley is about 28k, not nigh on 40k, so I reckon he's worth about £4500 private? what do we reckon?

I think £4500 sounds about right Outlaw. Certainly seems realistic anyway.

Yup, I was referring to Wilsons in Romford. Probably worth having a spin up there as you have Honda, Renault, and Toyota all together in the one spot. Might be worth trying a bit of Sharking, i.e "bloke at the Honda garage offered me £4600 against a Jazz" etc etc. Toomeys in Bas Vegas would be even better but I dont think there are any motors sold there that you are interested in.

So, afeter not much farting about, and her insistance that we won't be using her Tesco shares to finance the purchase, just savings, we decided that it'd be Pug+£4500 ish.

Went to look at a Citroen C3 at a place in Maidstone yesterday, salesman was an absolute tool, and the car was gone. Literally, just round the corner is a Citroen dealer, and a Mazda one next to it. Sitting in the used car bit was this:

The deal was done. £3000 for Mr Pugsley, £4500 to find, including 6 months tax and a full service.

She was swayed by the automatically folding door mirrors...

That dash looks a lot smarter than the horrors in current small Fords. Seem to have a good reputation, most Fords from this century.

I wasn't a huge fan of that generation of Fiesta in terms of looks (a very dull box), but from memory (I had to drive about 40 miles in a hired 53 plate one once) it was a decent car to drive and reasonably comfortable as far as modern day cars go. It was only the 1.25 jobbie, but seemed peppy enough and very, very sweet. The dashboard buzzed like crazy though and it was only a couple of months old at the time. Typical of rental cars...

My only real reservation was the terrible digital fuel gauge readout thingy, which seemed to gauge fuel in random chunks. It looks as though they had changed it for a proper gauge by the end of their run though... Good.

One thing that puts me off modern day Fords, even before driving them, is the dire attitude of the dealers towards their customers. We had lots of company Fords in my old job and we were forever having problems with various dealers and one particular a***hole of a service manager. I won't go into detail. I may be a huge fan of Ford’s some 15-20 years ago (a case of the press loathed them, but I just couldn’t personally buy one today for this reason alone.
