Cheap semi synthetic oil in Asda at the moment...

4 litres is only a tenner - think they had both 10w-40 or 5w-30.

edit!! they are 5 litre packs.

I posted this up a couple of months ago and remember getting slated for it! I think it was on a couple of other forums as well - some people are a bit bitchy about oil it seems, 'I use this oil, why would I use this?'!!

IIRC it was slated because the deal you posted wasn't very good value, this one is a bit more like it.

The one you posted was 2 litres for £9 which was supposedly half price but the 5 litre was £18.

There seemed to be some confusion in the thread I think and I also think Asda had labelled them incorrectly at the time. It was probably supposed to be a similar offer to the current one but they had labelled up the 2 litre cartons instead of the 4. :)

Yeah, I saw that too. It's 4.5 litre cans for £10 in 10/40 15/40 and 5/40 flavours, 2 litre cans of the same stuff are £7, which makes no sense, but tbh typical for ASDA

There's nowt wrong with Asda oil. I've been running my fleet on pretty much nothing else for ten years now, including several track days, and never had any issues.

Like supermarket petrol and tyres, you can't really buy oil in this country that isn't fit for purpose. Some may be better than others, but it should all be to a decent standard. There are so many quality control checks done (by the manufacturers themselves and officialdom) that crap merchandise rarely, if ever, makes it to the shelves.

Formula Autos is right, all lubrication oil must meet a certain API standard. Cheaper types may require more frequent changes, but they should all 'do the job'

 For the love of your piston rings please don't do it :cry:

I did read somewhere that Asda oil is actually Duckhams - but I've no idea if that is true or not!

Oh, and when I ran my old £40 mini, I kept 2 5 litre tubs of Wilko 2.99 oil, one in each door bin, as it would without fail regularly empty its sump due to being totally worn out. Never did it any harm!

What's the deal with only selling oil in 4 litre bottles now anyway? Tight Gits!!

If you have a halfords trade card, their 15/40 works out under a tenner for 5l.

I read the cheapest of the cheap oil (like the 1.99 for a litre from Asda) is 'recycled oil', but I presume some must be recycled? The expensive stuff must have additives or something. The only problem I've had with oil is when the engine wasn't getting any!

Recycled oil? Surely not.

The cheapest oil you can get is very thick oil, only suitable for lawnmowers and elderly OHV engines.

You can still get "motorway" oil for about a fiver for 5 litres, I remember years ago it would cover the inside of an engine with a funny varnish stuff and soon create a black sludge that was impossible to get rid of. Horrible. No idea if it does the same nowadays.

Ive stuck some £8 Morrisons 15/40 in the Audi and it seems to have done the trick. I was half expecing the engine to seize after 10 miles but im actually quite impressed. It doesnt smell very nice though! I had previously been using 20/40, because of assumed engine wear due to mileage. The thinner stuff has exposed a few oil leaks!

TBH The rate the Golf is drinking oil, it doesn't matter what I put in as it's only in there for a couple of weeks... currently it's 15W40 Mobil semi (still only £4 a litre at Tesco, and Tesco is closest to my house) but if they run out I'll whack own-brand 15W40 Turbodiesel oil in. Oil's oil!

+1 to both. Petrochemicals aren't easy to refine, at least in large quantities. Which means it has to come from the same refineries the majors use. It also has to comply to BS/API/ISO and various other specs. So it ought to be perfectly good.

And I've run the 5w-30 variety in the Mondy, which, as an early 2L silver top, is notoriously finicky about its' oil. And the Asda stuff works just as well as any other. Also, Asda's closer to me than the local petrol station, so they win.

You might find it stops drinking the oil if you use something else.

A few years ago I got all the oil leaks repaired on my old SAAB 900 and treated it to some Comma semi-synthetic oil, which I'd found to be very good at making the oil light go out quickly. The oil level dropped alarmingly over the next week and I topped it up with standard Valvoline oil, which was the low-cost quality option at the time. After I'd topped up with a sump's worth of Valvoline the consumption stopped completely.

Noticed this morning ASDA oil is back up to £14 :(

It's more tempting to mash his face against the exhaust manifold TBH.... I think I'll pass on the snake oi... erm I mean "Engine Restorer". Mainly because I've got a replacement engine lined up, but he won't swap if mine's totally gibbed :)

I must say I've put different oil in today and it doesn't smell as much. Might get someone to follow me for a "smoke check".

Get yourself down to the local Homebargains, depending on your luck you'll probably find Gulf Semi-Synthetic for £8.99 or Shell Helix Fully Synthetic for £9.99 - both in 4L jugs I believe?

I bought both types - I buy oil based on the rating - I really don't think you can go wrong with any of them as long as you change your oil on time and keep an eye on levels.

Mr B - the home bargains at the Crewe retail park had the gulf oil mentioned above when I was there last Friday.
