Have you got a next car in mind?

Maybe a Mk4/5 Cortina but I also have a hankering for an XJ6 Series 1 or 2.

Feeling the love for some Volvoness at the moment. A 164 or an early 264. I'd really love a 142s but that's out of my price range at the moment.

What about a 262? IIRC they are pretty damned unloved, are prices still reflecting that?

I'd quite like a big exec car with an old fashioned diesel powering it.

Current 'faves' are the Mercedes W124 300D, Citroen XM 2.5 TD, Rover 825D and Ford Scorpio TD.

I'm feeling an itch for a Mercedes G-Wagen. GR8 for towing Sciroccos.

On the list for one day, no particular order:

Something big and Volvo-ish (I like eddyramrod's 262C idea)

XJS or Series 3 XJ6

Early SD1 Rover would be nice but ideally not for £6k

A really scabby late 70s 911

Audi 100 5-pot circa 1980 (or later 80s Avant, the smooth one)

As you were nice to me about the Volvo, I'll just say: don't! My mate has a G, and it's vile. I've driven it. Best thing you can do with a G is what Matt Damon did: beat it to death with a Volga. (My mate has 4 other assorted Mercs as well, so you can see he likes them! He also has a big DVD collection, I'd bet money he has all 3 Bournes...)

Funnily enough - and I don't know if this applies to any of the rest of us - I want one or two of the things I couldn't afford, when I first had my licence. (1990 to be exact) Original, and unmolested (or sensibly and very lightly upgraded), but not too perfect.

Mk2 Astra GTE 16v/Renault 5 Turbo - the first two properly quick cars I ever had the good fortune to drive.

Lotus Carlton - it's been on my wanted list since day 1, and also because I've never driven one. It'll be the only performance GM of its' era that I haven't, and I can't allow that to stand.

Oddly, I've had a notion for a big ol' British saloon lately; an Austin Westminster or such. No idea why.

Or the Trumpet Stag rusting away to nowt at the end of my street.

I was in a garage in Barrow In Furness the other week which had a perfect 'as new' condition '69 164 in. The owners pride and joy it was, he had about five of them.

Capri Perana

Way way less dosh to do a re-creation. Get a pensioner 1.3L Capper, or a V4 1500 schoolmarm model, and then buy a crate motor. Pop me an email and we'll provide our bracket kit and any finishing bits you might need. Boom, done. Forget the unnecessarily revised steering and rear axle on the real Peranas. Experience has shown it was not needed. A regular Atlas is up to the task for most V8 purposes under 400HP.

Do you do the strengthening gussets, or should I get those from Motomobil or someone, cos a 1.3 won't have 'em, a 3.0 would.

Am fancying a 1987 VW Passat. Povo spec in Tornado Red. I think its because someone needs to save them from the scenesters!

Otherwise I'm with Creeping J in that anything new in 1990 always attracts my attention as I also got my licence that year. Renault 5's, Fiat Unos, Ibizas, Golfs, and Rover R8's particularly

262Cs are valuable for their engine if nothing else as they used the iteration of the PRV V6 that was dumped into the DeLorean.

£2k minimum for a nice one methinks.

Cortina Mk1 , preferably a 1500 Super but any half decent 4 door will do. So that's at least £2k then!

I was going to look at an estate this weekend, but its been pointed out to me it featured in a recent classic magazine and the panel fit/paintwork/rear arches look terrible in the magazine photos.

i dont plan that far ahead.. although "im not buying anymore cars" usualy turns into "ZOMG i need to have that" within a day or two.

This is the one i was thinking about looking at, The fitment on one of the front wings isn't great and it need a caliper rebuilt, The current owner has only had it a few months after swapping it for another car which is the only reason i never went to see it although i still keep thinking that i should, Although i also doubt that it would fit in my poxy garage.

It's in Brentwood and he'll take £2100 for it as I've asked him, It's only been re-listed for sale again today.

Oh! Shame. But thanks for the tip. Mind you, I reckon it could be quite fun beating to death with a Volga in a tunnel

I saw a really tidy 83Y Passat 5-pot yesterday that gave me a tingling in the trousers, so add that to the list. Or a Volvo 262C if only to stop watanabe's mates scrapping it for the engine

First car I drove! 1965 Goodwood Green 2-door Super, bench seat, column shift, on Southport beach in 1974. I just looked on DVLA and JEV 463C "could not be found" so it's most likely dead now. This is the car I mentioned earlier that had been used in Red Rum's training (also on Souhtport beach).

I always seem to have a want for one thing then end up buying something else completely different just because it's there.

Therefore I'm on the want for a Rover P6 2000 at the moment so I'll probably end up with a Lancia Delta.

Posted

If we apply that logic... I'm on the want for a 1965 Humber Super Snipe, which probably means I'll end up with a 2004 Fiat Punto...

Posted

I've got a shite buying dilemma because:

1) I'd have to sell my BX to get something. I'm not setting the GSA...

2) My fiancee would prefer I had one car anyway

3) We have rather different tastes when it comes to old cars...

4) I'm broke

Currently I've got a bit of a hankering after an Allagro as a daily, which I think would be much fun.

A CX or XM would be a logical and stylish upgrade from the BX, each of which have their pros and cons. Preferably a simple spec model with the least amount of stuff to go wrong.

I keep eyeing up Pug 405 saloons too, because they can be quite smart if well kept. I like the idea of one of those sporty 205 1.4 models too, especially if it was a 5 door one - quite rare it seems. Mostly seem to be three door XSs around.

I'm fickle though, because my wants often change according to what I've seen on ebay tat thread recently: e.g. if its a Simca 1307 on lebencoin I think "schwiiiing".

Mark.

Should really get my old Audi back on the road before summer's out, but above all the usual stuff still got a raging stonk on for...

1. Simca 1000 or 1100

2. Chevanne

3. Any standard Vauxhall-Opel 1977-82

... as the next purchase.

My mate has an XM, bought for stuff-all from a scrappy. You can just see it behind my Cadillac in this pic...

The James Bond Mustang is his. The XM is his and wife's daily.

It varies depending on what I've seen on eBay, or passed on the road this afternoon, or what has been featured in a magazine buyers guide this month BUT:

- I have a long-term hankering for a 2CV. I spent many, many hours being driven around in a relative's 2CV-6s(a yellow/black Charleston followed by a white Special) back in the day and every summer I go through the same process of digging out the Haynes Book of the 2CV and convincing myself that I need one.

-There was a Harvest Gold Austin 1300GT for sale at the roadside nearby a few weeks ago that attracted a lot of drooling from myself, so now I'm also quite keen on an ADO16 of some sort.

Posted

I'm currently pondering buying another recovery truck. It will depend on how much I remember the 3.00am phone calls from arseholes who wanted me to travel 200 miles to pick them up and who offered me forty quid for the privelidge.

Posted

I'm feeling the trouser love for a really, really decent E28 shark nose 5 Series but a 528i rather than a shit spec 520i ideally. Or another Mark 1 1100 only I can't be arsed to restore another one. It would be a toss up between the long silver strip dash of the Austin and the funky Morris dash with the A40 Farina instrument pod. Both are utterly lush and BMCtastic.

Austin 3 litte, a B series 18/22 Princess, a Maxi, Mk4 Zephyr/Zodiac, that sort of old shit really.

I never plan to buy anything. I've always bought on instinct - seen something and thought 'fuck it, that's got my name on it'.

Best way! At least you'll have a load of fun learning new stuff each time. Hello, I didn't know these rusted there... :D
