💚 Grizz’s Folly - 1992 Oldsmobile 88 Royale Collection Thread….. Pt1 Collection Video loaded.

Do we start a collection thread and story this early??

Those who know me or have become accustomed with my questions will have deduced that I have another car incomming.

Planning and logistics are imperative here. Because I am a tight ass. Mainly because these vehicles have to wash their own faces.

So insurance, recovery, road tax and moving it 260 miles to my house are all DEAL BREAKERS.

Saying that….. I have found it all came up

The fourth could have been dealt with by getting said car recovered. But where’s the fun in that. Plus, what’s the cost?

So I will be collecting and driving it home. Even that is not yet cast in stone.

So do I tell the story as it stands so far??

I have called the car Grizz’s Folly for now. All subject to change.

The dictionary definition of Folly is below.

What's another word for folly?
A foolish action, practice, idea, etc.; absurdity. the folly of performing without a rehearsal. Synonyms: lunacy, madness, injudiciousness, indiscretion, foolishness, mistake, rashness, imprudence.

Let me know.

Not sure if this was a guess.

But this is the car that I saw advertised and on 6 December started investigating

A bit of procrastination and questions to Dennis my best friend in America who was positive about these cars, despite their image in America. FWD, V6, Retirement car.

So this is the car.

Many ideas and silly plans.

One of the important deal breakers was the girth of the car.
Note my Scenic in front of the alleyway.

Handsome well-proportioned cars that era of Buick and Oldsmobile.

The volumes of these cars sold indicate how accurately GM knew their conservative buyers.

They are still innocuous 35 years later.

My preference lies with the more angular designs that preceded them.

But I have high expectations of this car.

Morning

I have a short list of tools that I am planning on taking along to collect the car.

Keeping in mind the trip starts with a 2 hour train trip.

So I am limited to a small backpack for living out of (as I am spending a few days at Craigs probably building something) and probably a small bag for “tools”.

Listed below.

Any recommendations on anything else to pack?

Small + large flat and Philips screwdrivers
Wireman’s pliers
Side cutters
Adjustable spanner X2
Ductape
Electrical tape
Some electrical wire
Fuses
Small jump pack
Multimeter
Hammer
Stanley knife
Light bulbs
Zip ties
Old sheet or blanket
Some rags.

Bag of prayers.

The trip may morph into a 1200 mile road trip to get home from the initial 250 mile straight home run I had planned. Keeping in mind, purchase and drive is sight unseen

Surely “Adventure”

Astro is looking great today.

I would add gloves, a tyre inflator and a waterproof coat or change of jumper in case its pissing down during any repairs.

You've bought recovery - why bother with the tools....

Live a little ... enjoy the adventure ! ... 😇

Find out the wheel bolt size, take an extendable wheel brace with the correct socket.

The preamble to my car collection continues.

Been busy.

School of YouTube this morning

Noticed my YouTube channel ONLY HAS 888 subscribers

Sadly it sucks a bit   But maybe I need to up my game?

Also to the garage to pull together a cereal killer starter kit

Bit of a load you know

Of course I have national recovery on this car

.

PS  There may be a cryptic clue in one of the photos, as to me probably doing a 1000 mile detour before going home.

Christmas day.
48 hours before I head out towards Heathrow AirPort.
Meeting up with Craig at Terminal 5 and heading back to his house. That’s 205 miles from my home.
We get there probably after 8pm.

Train ticket bought online, thanks to Sarah the widow helping me navigate the “Trainline” online.

I have always seen the collection and return to my house as a real cost to ownership and acquisition.

After agreeing to buying the car, I asked the seller to continue using it as his daily too

So added to my Dartford toll account, Green Flag recovery, and obviously train ticket

So here we go.

I'd add in if nobody has:

Set of mole-grips.

Disposable gloves to keep yr hands  crud-free.

Small led torch.

Perhaps some 'de-icer' if the heater does not clear the screen.

Paper towel for interior condensation in case of above.

If you have space I'd pack a compact sleeping bag to keep warm in case of a long FTP - some low temp's forecast.

Make sure yr phone is well charged or carry a small power-pack.

G'd luck...👍

Brief nostalgic US write-up on a similar era Olds' found languishing:

Having been stuck at the side of the road until 3am in Nottingham at the beginning of December, I can confirm that a sleeping bag would have been a bloody good idea 🥶
