I thought this could do with its own thread, I had no clue it was even there. Strange when Id been down this road beforehand! Its been there since 1994 according to the DVLA, looks like the underneath may be pretty rotten then.

How funny, I just spotted one of these returning to nature over here... yesterday! I couldn't get close enough to photograph it though. I love old vans and estate cars, I firmly believe someone should be saving them, and I'm quite happy for that to be me. One project at a time though, so on with the A40...

Nice.

Ah, the irony of 'Weybridge' (Weighbridge) written on the side.

Rat look. If that was a VW, it'd be worth zillions. Even got a budget suspension drop! (by filling it with old tat).

Truly inspiring spot, thats certainly the kind of thing that gets me frothing at the mouth. When the world blows up, all that will remain are cockroaches, Bruce Forsyth and at least one Commer van.

Luxfords are a local removal firm to me! Their vehicles are still in the same colour scheme too. In fact a Hot Rodding mate of mine is Robert Luxford and used to be a director of said company

Even got a budget suspension drop! (by leaving it in the garden till the suspension mountings rot off the chassis).

EFA! :D

When I was about 8 or 10, someone had one of these (it was either ex BT, or it was a BT van, same colour etc.). A dog ran into the road, wasn't looking where it was going, and the Commer ran over it. The dog darted around underneath the van for about 5 seconds, and shot out the side, completely unharmed!

Just made this photo my 'desktop background', a truly outstanding spot sir!! 8)

I have a real hankering for one of these - I know a guy who's restored at least 3 of them in the past, including converting a minibus to camper, so I'd have plenty expert assistance if I ever found a decent example. Me being me, I'd have to mess with it, but I reckon a paint job, some fiddling with the grille and some slight lowerage would be all it would ever need for ultimate coolness. I also guarantee that at least 80% of the trendy dub kidz wouldn't even know what the hell it was. You could roll up to air-cooled meets and tell them it's a one-off 60's prototype VW for the Japanese market - instant kudos and nubile scene-pussy! :D:D

As i said on Flickr Sam it's a cracking spot, There was one of these sitting in a field for years near my home when i was a kid, It was a K plate Luton version used by a local Scramble club to store stuff in.

I used to play inside it, I still have a M and C badge from the front somewhere that i took of it as they are my initials. :D

Cheers for all the comments, I thought you lot would like it! I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw it. Has anyone preserved a Dodge version? Someone (Torsten, I believe) spotted one in London a few months back, and the Post Office museum has a postbus one in mint condition, but there doesnt seem to be any on the show circuit...?

There's a 'B' suffix one of those parked up on a garage round the corner form me - I guess that makes it a 1964 one. It's defo a van and not a camper conversion, which makes it all the more impressive that it's survived! May well try and get a photo, since I took the Imp there for its MOT, so will use the Rootes connection as an excuse.

I spotted that a couple of years back (and did post pics!!)

There was also an old XR2 further down the road that i later saw on ebay and I'm sure there was other stuff outside that hoise too....I'll look for the pics later.

and next to it? An abandoned MkIII Trannie??

Dodge Spacevans turned up in people's Leicester & Edinburgh spots in the past I can remember! It does seem to be a case that the later Dodge shape is actually rarer than the classic Commer PB shape !? :?

still see the luxford trucks around here. where was that abandoned one?

Id quite like to see them, I forgot you used to live round here. I remember looking at one of your old spotting threads and the local beige CF camper was on it.... XR2 wasnt there sadly.

I saw this round Frogmore/Blackwater way, quite a good place for tat still.
