I needed something better for the commute, so I went billy big balls and bought the highest mileage and cheapest Volvo 5 cyl diesel I could find

The two reasons it was cheap, 197k (but pretty much full history)

and the front wing which the previous owner ran into a skip

Hopefully I won’t need. It, but wish me luck everyone 👍

So far everything works, everything, apart from the AC but I'm sure it just wants a regas M9

Looks fab, I nearly bought one of these last week but realised it would be silly as I didn’t need another car.

Nice,

but, ‘don’t need another car’ ?

what?

I don’t mean to be that guy, (an old fart thinking of cars past overly wistfully) but buying this feels a bit like when I got my old 1985 CX Turbo 1 Series 2 car in 1998. By that I mean, it’s shouldn’t be possible for an oik like me with no real money to spend should be allowed things that seem this good and ‘specc ‘d out’. I mean buying these things at the absolute bottom of their ‘just another new car that’s getting slightly old’ depreciation curve (remember the CX was just a normal 13 year old car in 1998, just the same way the Volvo is just another 12 year old car now)

I think I just did what I never intended to do and bought an actually quite modern car (by my standards)

Imposter syndrome, I got that all the time with the Audi A8 and felt like a fraud driving it. I'm just a middling button pusher  and this car was bought new by the MD of a prestigious gun -making factory for the rich and Royal.

Or, to turn it on its head, it was champagne motoring for (my) lemonade money and why the heck not!

Enjoy your Volvo, one of any description is on my bucket list. My late dad bought them for decades so I cant believe I haven't owned one myself!

Nice car, I felt as you describe when I bought a V70 T5 in 2005! I still love Volvos...

I hope you enjoy it!

First jobs have been jobbed, whaddya know, the A/C really did only need a regas m9.
Had a local place test it for pressure and refill, holds and works a treat. It’s held for the last 4 hrs and still works, lets see how it fares in days and weeks time. Place your bets.

Washer pump wasn’t making any water happen at the screen, pulled the wheel arch liner and reached about, pulled out the pump and also the seal/screen to clean them out.
Pump motor knackered, corroded and nasty and never going to work.
New pattern part pump 14 quid and here in 2 days. So I naturally stripped down a universal pump for its motor and bastardised it into the old Volvo pump body. Despite it being a Frankenstein creation it works just fine, so the new pump coming can be a spare when it lands.

1: Volvo on your bucket list

2: You're in Scotland

3: Your dad owned several

4: You're on Autoshite

Yeah you're right.  I can't believe it either.  This anomaly must be rectified, stat!

I'd just like to add, that the 5cyl diesel still sounds pleasingly different. Windows open and giving it some in the lower gears produces a good noise.

Am an even happier shite purchaser now

Looks great and I hope the regas holds!

With fairly modern cars, more often than not, I've had good experiences with a regas. Sometimes they lull you into a false sense of security and just stop working a couple of months later as it gradually leaks.

I've had air con in cars work for years after a regas and quite a few times now

I know what you mean, air con can be a weird thing sometimes.

Remembered another thing!
it’s only £35 a year to tax !!!

mind blown how a diesel qualifies for 35 quid tax bracket.

also my dpf and egr lights aren’t on and haven’t been on , amazing and great news, I think we can all agree. As anyone* will tell you leggy old diesels will be lit up like a Christmas tree and all the nuns and kittens will die horribly horribly.   I’ll be sure to let you know if/when it plays up

My dad had a brilliant S60 non D5 from new in 2006. Just badged as a '2.4D' but still 163bhp and went well and sounded tremendous. It had quite a high spec as well and I loved driving it. My mum loved the tan leather upholstery and she still talks about it.

Sadly the autobox borked at 9 years old but that's what happens when the fluid is never changed. Not his fault, he wasn't really a car person and it was 'sealed for life*".

I'd love another just like his, but manual.

Do it, why not, when 2013 ones are affordable there must be plenty of slightly older 2.4D's out there for not much
