Goodwood cars wanted

Hi all

I've been asked to help source British classics for display at the splendid new event on the Goodwood estate, Vintage at Goodwood, on August 13-15. For this event, display vehicles should be absolutely standard or mildly period-modified, and Goodwood would particularly like a 1970s Transit Mk1 or Mk2 to be included - so I'm hoping you can help us locate a suitable van/camper/pick-up/WHY... Needs to be period-looking of course, so no signwritten websites...

Vintage is not strictly a car event - it's a Music Festival + Celebration of British Style, Music, Culture and Design from the 1940s to the 1980s and is the brainchild of leading British designer Wayne Hemingway.

There will be sections set aside for each decade with many big-name artists performing in each, a whole High Street of 'period' shops will be created specially for the event, there will be fashion shows, art, design... take a look at http://www.vintageatgoodwood.com for the full picture.

For someone keen on the style and atmosphere of the time, it's unmissable and it seems likely it will become as much of a success as the Festival of Speed and Revival Meeting at Goodwood.

We are still looking for cars along the lines of the shortlist below, which I'm including in case you know owners of other marques that might like to join us (the shortlist is quite flexible, so please be free with suggestions but the emphasis is on mainstream not exotica). Cars should be brought down on the Thursday night to be on display in front of the 1940s/50s/60s/70s/80s areas until Sunday night/Monday morning: in return, Goodwood will provide with each car two tickets for the whole event (normal price £135 each!) and campsite passes. The idea is to park the car in a group of 10-12 outside the entrance for each decade zone and leave it there for the weekend while you go and enjoy the rest of the event, or head home and pick it up later if you prefer. The car will be displayed much as the cars are for the Cartier concours at the Festival of Speed.

They are only looking for British cars, in original condition for the era. That is, if the car was 5 years old, it has to look it and doesn't need to look like it just left the showroom.

That sounds like a right fun weekend, right up my street. not at £135 a pop though!

Ken Nordine’s ‘Colors’

 One of the greatest albums of all time! Rest of the music looks a bit wank though....

You display a car, you don't have to pay anything, that's what the post is about.

i tried reading who was performing, but skimmed over after my eyes started hurting with all those silly colours and fonts

He does say the shortlist is flexible....

Don't think he'd want a rusty wreck of a Herald when there ought to be plenty of "nice" ones to choose from.

Hmmm, I wonder if he'd like a nice '70s trailer tent though

(On the subject of price how much is Glastonbury? I can imagine the conditions at Goodwood being somewhat more sanitary than that.)

No 80's Fords????

As far as I can tell they already have the 80s Fords, with the exception of transits.

He does say that the cars do not need to look new, they want cars that look period (as in used, not like blob). A 1971 car would not look new in 1978. Might suggest my GT6. Definately does not look new. But probably looks a bit too rough at the mo.

I come from down there so it would be nice to get down and see everyone as not been down there for a couple of years.

How many '80s Fords are 'British'?

Pama International is Fuzz Townsend from Practical Classic's band. For reference.

Hmmmm.... I see one of the acts is The Swingle Singers. There a kind of easy listening/jazz acapella group. I used to share a house with one of them back in the late eighties.

She was kind of kooky... we lived in Marlow, Buckinghamshire and she worked in Aylesbury. Every lunchtime she'd drive home at 100 mph ,dash into the house, turn tv on to watch Neighbours (when Madge and Mrs Mangel were still in it) , not have time to eat anything, then as soon as Neighbours finished, woosh out the door back to work. All in 1 hour.

Every evening she would practice her scales then she'd suddenly disappear for a week or two on a tour of Germany or something.

I remember they did a wicked doo-wop version of the Star Trek theme.

She drove some really crap 'autoshite' style car but I can't for the life remember what it was.

Whens Kid Creole gonna drop the `Kid` *shaking head*

I know someone with a Mint Mk2 Transit & an equally mint Corsair but we`ve missed it now havent we?

Shame Charlie Chuck wasnt there.

Posted

it's not till next month. Hmmm mint Mk2 transit, point him my way! Or at www.mk1mk2transit.co.uk

I`ll let him know about that site, but he`s a busy man with over 40 cars & vans at the last count, he doesnt have much time for t`internet.

He`s my ex motor vehicle studies teacher from school & I helped him restore the Transit in the mid 80`s.

Just for you Fred, its a `normal` mid blue 2.0 auto Custom panel van & he uses it all the time, I cant remember the reg though, I think its about a W or X plate.

The Corsair was his Dads & he`ll never part with it its a silver E with black roof & interior.

Auto? Bloody ell. Had it got white side panels?

Posted

No, its blue all over... you know `that` blue they all were back then.. like a vivid mid solid blue...

You just made me start missing me LWB, she's not well and is in for a 2.1.....

Posted

Well if she`s in for a 2.1 I wouldnt be too down about it!

Were the manual Mk2`s 5 speed Fred?

If not have you bunged a Sierra/Granny box in it?

Posted

The Mk2 was never 5 speed, but we had a later transit MT75 fitted. Not too bad to do, cut a new hole in the floor, fit it with the donor crossmember (bolt up) and the prop shaft, if it's the same (LWB, SWB ect). Standard the Mk2 was 4 speed or 4 speed OD. You don't want a car box in a van, if you are doing any commercial work with it. Aside from that, the gear lever comes up in the wrong place, some clash with the handbrake!

Posted

Ah yes, of course! didnt think of the shift position!

While I`m on the subject of Transits, as a teenager I got, built, a plastic 1:24 Transit kit, it was a standard facelift Mk2, it was quite well detailed, with seperate (proper) wheel trims on the proper pressed steel wheel rims! It was unusual in that it had self adhesive stickers/badges, instead of water transfers. I dont supose you know who made it do you? I cant find any on ebay.

I`ve probably still got bits of it in my `old box of broken up model kits`
