the high number of flat caps + beards

Only partly true; I'll admit that 100% of my Morgan-owning friends have beards but there is a 0% ratio of flat cap wearers, even though he usually drives it with the hood down

Funny that. Rover drivers, according to "populaa meedya" are mostly supposed to have beard etc....

At gathering, most of "my Rover crew" are clean shaven, I'm the only one, (Well, along with another owners brother) who has a beard. Then again, mines one of those young short beards.

I'm talking about beards on a car forum :?

Being the owner of proper V8 Rovers, I don't have a beard, or a need for one :P

Absolutely nothing wrong with beards, or the discussion of beards. anywhere, anytime.

Great! In that case. Its not because I am the owner of not very proper Rover V6. I just love my beard and keep it because without it I look like a cross between a Potato/Desperate Dan and my face feels naked (And cold) without it.

The old shape Clio is, I think, still on sale as the Clio Campus. Which means it's been in production since '97/'98.

Renault also pulled the same trick with the R5 Mk II (or Supercinq) - turning it into a 'Campus' when the original Clio came out in the early '90s. My Dad ran an M reg one for a while, and I've seen newer ones than that - not sure how long they clung on. IIRC they were being made in Eastern Europe somewhere - are they still being churned out?

My local SEAT dealer still has an unregistered Alhambra in the showroom - the Ford Galaxy/VW Shazza clones came out in '95 didn't they? So conceivably the same basic car on sale for 15 years and counting.

The Fiat Panda and 126 also had fairly long innings, didn't they? I seem to recall Pandas turning up in the Daily Express World Car Guide until about eight years ago. Sadly unavailable in Blighty by then though.

The 126 was first launched in 1972 in air cooled form, and sold in the uk right up to to 1991/2 when the Cinqucento was launched.

However production continued in poland along side the Cinqucento, with production finally discontinued in September 2000!!

That's a production run of 28 years

The enigine was changed from the original 594cc Fiat 500 sorced unit, to the 652cc eigine in 1977.

Then again in 1987 the big change to a 704cc water cooled engine, when it was called the BIS.

The Panda was first launched in 1980, with of a choice of an air cooled engine from the 126 or a 903cc engine from the 127.

The model was revised in 1986 with alot of cosmetic changes, and the F.I.R.E enigine's being introduced at the same time.

The model was revised slightly in 1994 with the only major change being the grille!! producion finally ended in 2003 after 23 years in production.

Not a bad run for either car!! however the Fiat Uno is still in production from 1983 to the present day with the Brazilian/ South African made Uno. That's nearly 27 years!!

Jaguar X type has been around for ages hasn't it?

The Bristol Beaufighter is still available. Complete with 440ci Chrysler V8 and TorqueFlite 'box, as it always was. That's got to be at least 30 years, 'cos it's in my Observer's Book of Automobiles, from 1980.

In fact, if you ask Bristol nicely (and they like you ), they'll build a new model of just about any of their cars for you.

The caveat, I suppose, is that they're a seriously low-volume maker, and no two Bristols are exactly the same anyway.

Also, don't forget the Daewoo which was a mildly restyled Mk2 Ashtray. That would make the Ashtray's run around 25 years, then?

I happened across a Morgan 'tour' on the way out of Falkland, some years ago. About 6 or 7 4/4's and a couple of V8's, all being driven by gentlemen of a certain age, with some gusto, and wifey in the passenger seat. All with well-established facial hair! Then there was the lout bringing up the rear in a (then new) Aero 8, who seemed to be trying to reach escape velocity...

Datsun 1200 first appeared in 1970 and the Backie (pick up) version was still being sold in SA until a couple of years ago
