The old girl is a credit to you Dicky, and those mudflaps were a bit of a find. I bet you were well chuffed to find those. It's always good to see povvo motors getting loads of attention at events, my Metro is the same and I reckon it's something to do with the classic giffer colour. Can't beat a bit of BL Champagne beige!

Thanks Rob! I think that's exactly what it is, people can't really relate to the high spec/sporty models which are all you see at shows now as you didn't see many of those back in the day. However, the base and low spec ones, in boring colours are what people remember their parents/aunt/uncle/grandparents having, a lot of them used just to trundle to Safeway and back, and they evoke a lot of memories. We definitely have to get your Metro and my Maestro together for some pictures sometime, I'll have it at Brooklands next year if I don't see you before then!

Sounds good! Austin Morris day is probably the next time I'll be using it as it's SORNd over the winter.

Beautiful. And "Champagne" too, if I'm not mistaken.

Did I hear you say you wanted MOAR pics? Probably not, but you're having some anyway.

I went down to Brighton on Sunday to watch the end of the London to Brighton run. Met up with G. Cox while I was there who I think was quite pleased to see the Maestro again, over a year since I bought it back. The weather was terrible unfortunately, and the car got very dirty, so this morning I gave it a really good clean, and took these photos. It's tucked up dry in the garage again now. I even got complimented on its condition by an old giffer in Aldi car park earlier, which was nice.

has your car got the revised plastic wheel arch shields?

mine had the 1st type which were flat and shorter than the 2nd type- so my car used to be quite scared of big puddles lol

Posted

Anything interesting on the London to Brighton run or was it mostly Sherpa Coupe's, Stags, old Minis etc etc (yawn)

Posted

Not sure about the arch liners, it only has them on the front and they look pretty conventional to me! So I'm guessing they're the revised items. Possibly revised as part of the minor facelift in August 1984 when the badging, headlining, instruments and a few other things were changed.

It was the proper London to Brighton run Steve! Veteran cars. There was a particularly awful one there that basically looked like a plank of wood with four bicycle wheels and a lawn mower engine, which Gary and myself found most amusing. I think Barrett probably got pictures of most cars that attended, some people had come from as far away as the USA, Germany and Switzerland to take part!

Unfortunately, no Horsey Horselesses were spotted.

the modified ones are longer and the bottom kinks in towards engine/gearbox and there are two small arched covers that sit over the driveshaft

with the originals any standing water gets deflected of the wishbones and chucked up the bulkhead onto the handily placed coil and dizzy!!!

i found a dizzy cover of a horizon and put later shields on to calm its hydrophobia lol

Posted

Oh yeah the dizzy did get wet once when I drove through a puddle. That was annoying.

Posted

mine had the coil vertical but i know some were horizontal

Posted

Yeah my coil is mounted vertically. Come to think of it I remember my dad telling me he managed to drown the electrics when driving it along a flooded road. Not had that happen to me yet, fortunately!

Those mud guards really bring it out. Still all dull and good though.
