no mention of car tax related increases in the speech, but i wonder if there is anything in the red books?

*fingers crossed for the renintroduction of the rolling 25 years*

I'd say theres more chance of the government buying me a helicopter than there is of rolling 25 year tax exemption being reintroduced.

Don't hold your breath on the classic tax.

Petrol shouldn't go up, as we are midway thorugh the phased increases in Fuel tax duty announced by 'old eyebrows' in March, or whenever the last one was.

we also have 2.5% to be added on due to vat increase from Jan 4. next year.

I'd like to see 'Shite Lanes'. Along the same principle as bus lanes but for shite cars. After all my cars paid years more road tax than most, plus if I start queing it'll overheat.

Ok this has nothing to do with the budget, but a good idea is a good idea

To expand this excellent wheeze, perhaps we should have a designated "twat" lane on roads. This lane would be festooned with pot holes, temporary traffic lights, speed humps etc.and would be reserved for anyone who irks us. Current and ex Transport Ministers for the past 40 years, all of whom have done their best to make motoring life as miserable as possible. Mr Gatsonides, for inventing speed cameras, the bloke who invented traffic cones, the little git who invented stainless steel tea services [the ones which pour scalding tea/water anywhere but in the cup] and, of course, Mike Brewer. Other nominations?

On the subject of free VED - I'd be happy if it went altogether. It'll eventually be used as a tax-class for curtailing use of the cars it applies to, other road users get (understandably) miffed by it and it's been the cause for ripping old cars apart to make newer ones appear to be older. All for the sake of price of three tanks of fuel. Or thereabouts.

If they need some form of rolling tax to ensure all road users pay, but it doesn't hit cars in Museums and the like, stick the tax on fuel.

We must pay 'our countries' debts!!!!

The only thing this points out is how bad our government is with money.

I'd be happy to scrap VED and stick the tax on fuel, too. This would save a bit of money from chasing those who drive untaxed vehicles too. the only problem being LCV owners complaining about the high cost of fuel, but if another dye - say, blue - was stuck in LCV diesel, sell it at current duty and problem solved (up to a point.)

Scrapping road tax and putting it on fuel would also reduce by about elevty million the staff numbers at DVLA......therefore it will never happen.

Increased VAT on fuel, that is gonna make it even moar mega expensive.

Oh, hang on, IR registered for VAT. 8)

Posted

A sad case of ignoring common sense there, especially since as they have tried to use road tax to limit those in Chelsea Tractors, afterall, the "tax" if VED was scrapped and shifted onto petrol would be more proportional to engine size due to higher consumption!

Honestly, if the chancellors worked for an accountancy firm they would ALL have had their arses fired long ago.

Suppose this new government will make it considerably easier to do a remake of Tucker's Luck.

There's all this talk about public sector pay now and talk of fiddling with pensions, no doubt the union will then call for a series of strikes which won't do anything. Next time there's a strike I'm just going to turn up, I'm not even in the union, sod them - they're completely useless and don't represent my views. No point thinking long-term, might as well just squeeze out every day's pay before the inevitable redundancy.

As to the point about re-introduction of the rolling road tax, I will quite happily eat my hat if that happens.

GOVERNMENT...TAX...REDUCE...FREE......that's the funniest thing so far today

Twat lanes , what a wonderful idea.

I think that it would be more realistic for the classic car community to lobby for a rolling 30 year historic tax concession.

It would be in line with other European countries like France and Germany.

The impact on the budget would be less because the immediate effect would be only to make cars between 30 year and 38 years tax free.

If you have a 25 year old car then you only have to wait five years and you'll get it anyway.

In fact they could set a rolling limit of 38 years and we would all get it in the end, and the budget impact would be effectively nothing.

i speak to people all the time who think the rolling system is still in force

i have to explain the cut off point

Apparently it is still in force, according to any dipstick selling some old 80s tat on eBay

I'm with Hurst on this one! Civil servants won't be getting a pay rise for two years, so my "moonlighting" will have to get better! My spannering on days off will have to expand somewhat! The unions are useless and the general public think we're all cushioned from the real world. Oh no we're not!

F**k me, I've an £80,000 mortgage; just WHAT do they expect me to do? Take up drug running to make ends meet?

Wait a minute......

anyone know of any conservative MPs who are into shite cars?

Well, it'll have better job security than anything else in the UK currently, apart from being an MP that is....

I don't reckon boshing the RFL onto fuel is a good idea to be honest.

Next time 'we' need some money (or there's an oil rich country that needs invading) and the gov. are short of a few quid, then your fuel costs are going to go through the roof and they'll be sweet f.a we can do about it.

No. It just points out that we shouldn't be in a European community where we donate vast sums of money with no return.

well you must have a decent pay rate if your not getting an increase over the next 2 years...only applies to those earning over £21,000

I'm only on £8,250 in my civil servant jobs, so I will get a £250 raise pro rata each of the next 2 years....and at least you have a mortage, I can only rent properties, which means my money goes down the pan every month, not into my future as mortgage payments do...as for VAT did anyone notice the difference when it went down?? nope me neither...apart from beer and car bits not much that I buy has VAT on it anyway....

Indeed whitevanman - 2.5% isn't a "massive" increase while it would be nice not to have it it's only really going to be noticable on big purchaces.

As for public sector pay well I work in the private sector and the company I work for has been on a pay freeze for the last 3 years so it's about time the public sector took on their share.

It could have been a lot worse given the state the country is in, I certainly don't envy enyone in the government at the moment trying to sort it all out, no matter what they do folk are going to be upset.
