Hamfisted RFU managed to drop a valve collet... Pingfuckit

Anybody happen to have one available for first class post to save me ordering one from DMGRS and swallowing a £5 charge for 3 day postage on an 82p part?

I will gladly recompense any shiter

Long shot, but if you don't ask you don't get..

Nooo head is on the bench 😇

Means nothing. If a collett goes ping it'll end up somewhere you don't want it to, if the block is within 3 miles, I'd be whipping the sump off to check.

Come back to it tomorrow with fresh eyes, am sure you'll find it unless your garage is a cluttered as mine.

This is very familiar. I stripped the carbs on an old GS500 I had . Normally I’m pretty chaotic and just put all the bits on the bench . This time I put each carbs parts into 1 of 4 takeaway tubs . Left and right carbs - upper and lower . Nice and organised.

Then I ran out of aerosol carb cleaner so reached up to the shelf above the bench to grab another . Managed to knock a can of GT85 off said shelf which then dropped onto the work bench , catching the edge of one of the takeaway tubs , yeeting its contents across 3 counties . A quick search found most bits but I was still missing an emulsion tube and the pin for the float . A Quick Look online found these to be about 60 quids worth .
Two days of searching and they were discovered 😂

Fuck my life

Here's what to do. Order one from Rimmer Bros for most of a weeks wages. As soon as the payment's been accepted, have a look at the bottom of your magnetic tray. Guaranteed it be in the first place you look. Works for me everything.

Having packed everything away in neatly labelled plastic bags when I took it apart, I *definitely* didn't waste nearly half an hour looking for this little bugger when I was cleaning up and reassembling things!

Did exactly the same on a ford cvh, except I knew it'd gone into the sump.

Local ford dealership, yeah we can supply, you have to have a bag of 25!?!?

Why 25? That's not even an engine set, or an even number for that matter.

I took the sump off.

Sorry RFU, no help at all, hope you find it

Powerful LED torch I find helps and go to the most obvious places first and then onwards.

Think the best "Oh where the fsck did THAT go?" Moment that I actually managed to recover from was dropping this spring when dismantling the headlight switch for the Invacar.

Which disappeared into the loose leaves and nonsense around the door of my garage.  Cue lots of swearing and eventually resorting to dragging an old speaker magnet around on the ground.  Thankfully the spring wasn't brass or I'd probably never have found the damned thing.  Especially as I didn't even realise the spring had escaped at the time - I just realised it was missing some time later and that I must have dropped it.  So there was a pretty decent area it could have been in, not even counting the bounce radius.

Pure carelessness on my part that was.

Sure we've all got a few stories like that though.  How the absolutely most stupid and seemingly inconsequential seeming component ends up escaping and taking longer to find than the original job did to complete.  *Cough* drum brake shoe retaining clips *cough*

I've had some desperate moments doing drum brakes on gravel driveways.

I saw that photo before I read what you wrote and was thinking... crikey, what a small valve spring!

Shite pic but I took the carb off my old scimitar and a screw from the spacer plate made a bit for freedom.

Luckily that particular valve was shut.

The valve collet was never found

I'm now £7.10 lighter but 4 valve collets were graciously dropped through my letter box in a very overkill jiffy bag earlier this week.

Yes, I ordered 4 as I could not trust myself 😂

Onwards!!!

Jesus clips are the worst

That’s what we used to call the wavy E clips that LDV and other British cars / vans used to use for holding the rear wheel cylinders on . Fucking bastards

Great. Fit the new ones in the bath with a heavy blanket over the top. Put the plug in first.
