One day car insurance for a 19 year old shite car?

Chaps,

I might be buying a 19 year old S-class Mercedes. If I buy it I will need to drive it home approx 30 miles, via the M4 and the M40!

I need one day insurance but I can't seem to find a firm that will provide cover for a 19 year old car.

Does anyone know if any firms that can provide short term cover for a reasonable price?

Can't you get standard insurance, and then cancel (fine within 14 days)? Not sure about deposits though.

I covered my then 29 year old Celica on a day policy a couple of years ago, no problem. I did find one of the companies wouldn't cover it, but I can't remeber who did. A quick google sorted it, though.

Here we go, from www.dayinsure.com

Our temporary car insurance policies cover a wide range of types of automobile, including protection for classic cars

This one doesn't appear to exclude old stuff.

£38 for 24 hours insurance! Still better than taking a risk and driving without insurance.

Cheers chap.

I am sure that insurance companies will hold back deposit money worth more than £38 if I cancel the policy within 14 days.

I've tried them, but unfortunately a 19 year old S-Class Benz is not a classic in their eyes.

I bought an old car recently and had to get a policy and then cancel it. Think it cost me £30.

Can you not add it to an existing policy you have as a temporary additional car?

The CIS used to do this and when I have bought a new car the insurer is usually o.k covering 2 while one is sold etc.

I plan to drive the new purchase home and use it as much as possible within the 24 hours to make sure that it is mechanically sound. All being well I will be driving this car to Poland and back in mid July. If the car is ok I will transfer my insurance from my MR2 onto the S-Class and smoke around in it for a while, until I get bored of the leather seats and cosseting ride. If for any reason the car does not tick all the right boxes I don't want to disturb my current insurance arrangements.

The other thing to bear in mind is that I will be viewing and hopefully buying the car in the evening, by which time my insurance company would have have closed it's doors for the day.

I looked at one-day cover for getting the Vario home back in April, in every case it was dearer than taking out a full year's cover on it. Try Adrian Flux, they do both cars for me at £85 fully comp for the Triumph and £13 for the 340, if I take the 340 off and put the 127 or something else on cover, then I'll lose the £13 and will be charged a further admin fee, but this isn't a multi-car policy, it's car-specific, comprehensive and the cheapest there is.

Even going to Markerstudy directly would have cost £67 for the year.

I used Tempcover to pick up my 205, which is also 19 years old, cost me £18 for the day.

My mate has trade plates and trade insurance, he's offered me it anytime, which is lucky.

I paid a 24 quid deposit to More Than, and they're good on cancellations. 38 for 24 hours!

take a mate with you who has insurance to drive other people's cars (check his certificate though because some campanies have started removing this benefit).

If it's your car and your mate has the benefit on his policy then he can legally drive your car.

Funnily enough I need to do this for the Rocco in the next week or so.

Thanks for raising this thread, saves me doing it. :D

INKORRECT.

/\/\/\ Agreed, 'cos the car itself must still be insured. £18 for one day when it's possible to get a policy for £13 for a year?

I added my 35 year old 1602 to my normal car policy for 24 hours last year when i collect it, Cost me £15.

Might be worth trying Tescos (08453004400) in case it's cheaper.

Thought we'd decided last time this was discussed that actually, the third party on other cars DOES NOT require the car to be covered elsewhere? Seem to remember Sire Bollox giving us the news on that. Must admit, I checked various policies I've got/had and none of them mentioned anything about needing the car to be covered elsewhere.

I once had to claim whilst driving someone else's car on my own insurance policy. At no point was I asked to demonstrate that the car was insured elsewhere, neither by the police nor the insurers.

+1.

The car you're buying will need to be insured for your mate's insurance to cover him to drive it, if that makes sense?
