Good to hear about Delphi, that would be my choice too.

The big rusty bolts are what puts me off the job too!

In case anyone was wondering, my procedure for getting the front of the car in the air is to get a big 3 ton jack (best money I ever spent) and use the jacking point at the front of the subframe. That gets the car comfortably off the ground. I then use 2 3 ton axle stands with the crescent-shaped platforms which fit perfectly around the tubular subframe. They were about £20 from ebay and I had only used them once before to support a gearbox as the platforms weren't really suitable for normal cars - until now!

Does it knock over potholes etc

Its weird, it kind of rattles over uneven surfaces on the left hand side? Potholes don't produce any sound. Im hoping its just a drop link.

New battery ordered, Exide*, Amazon's finest. The shit Lion battery lasted 3 years so I've gambled on this.  Lets be honest I'm not likely to own any of my cars except the 75 for very long 😂

When I changed the battery on mine I found that the bonnet can be opened almost vertically with a setting on the hinges - makes life a lot easier as the battery was seriously heavy, needs to be lifted straight up and I'm not tall!

Exide batteries are decent, from my experience. They usually offer at least 3y warranty on them here.

If it’s a fairly light rattle it’s most likely a droplink, they eat them for fun. Mine is on its second pair in 4 years, first pair were Meyle or Moog I think but now it has Lemforder, I want to keep the car a long time so spending the extra made sense.

I was thinking about that today actually,  good to know! I'll need a stepladder 😂

You must have seen me doing the same! One foot on the ladder, the other on the engine, straddling the battery and deadlifting it out. The shame! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Like @83C said it’s possibly just drop links although that’s what ours sounded like and it was the N/S ball joint. Sod’s Law I did everything in the front end but those ball joints as they felt fine but started knocking 2 days later! I’d genuinely thought the droplinks I’d just replaced were faulty as it sounded pretty much the same.

New battery for this today after it left me stranded last week.

The bonnet has a SERVICE MODE!

Mine ran itself down over our holiday, here I jump it from a 205 which didn't run until recently.

Got my new Icarsoft LR V3.0 today.

On the face of it, there doesn't appear to be very many more features than code readers at a quarter of the price. For example a C310 creator for a BMW is £50, this version of the Icarsoft was £200. Oh well, I'm not paying £500-£600 for GAP IID for a car I probably won't have all that long.

Anyway, although it only gives very limited live data, one of these is coolant temperature which is what I was after today. On a hilly country road it ranged nicely between 77c and 86c give or take so now its been bled properly the R5 thermostat seems to be working well. Good result.

Re my previous comment, this car is great, but I've unfinished business with Saab 9-5s and if a nice Aero Hot were to come up, my head could be turned!

As I mentioned elsewhere, my trusted local garage shut down at the end of June.

I phoned the number today the owner had previously called me on to tell me about this and left a voicemail. The answer message was their son's voice and he called me back about half an hour later. I outlined that I was looking to get 4 new front suspension arms fitted to the RR which was fine. He advised to get new bolts aswell. All booked in for 22nd. Im delighted about this as he was part of the only place I trusted with my cars.

As for the bits, I ordered 4 new lower arms. I could have bought cheap ones for about £120 but experience tells me these last but 6 months. So I went for Delphi bits plus 4 new bolts which came to £257, not unreasonable. 2 arms and 2 rear bushes for the 75 came in at £206 so for twice the car thats an alright price.

I feel a bit guilty about this job.

The mobile mechanic arrived as agreed at 10am, 2 hours of hammering and nothing wants to come off. Hes going to have to take the hub off and was away picking up a socket large enough when I took this snap.

The new arms are big heavy buggers so this sounds by all accounts like a right shitty job. No way I'd have attempted this 😂

Poor guy.

All done now.

The offside was the worst, the back bush on the the rear arm was shot as was the balljoint, which explains why it was latterly quite scary to drive.

Fair play to the lad doing that on your drive, can't have been easy for him.

When you mentioned booking it in I thought it would be on a ramp in a garage!

Its made me re-evaluate my desk job pushing buttons insofar as I'm quite a lot happier doing that now!

Just because Land Rovers must not be in a state of 'fixed' for more than ten minutes, its now sprung a healthy coolant leak.  Luckily I started high when looking and its a flange between a plastic pipe and the metal EGR. 2x 10 mms held it on so I've opened it up, given it a coat of Permatex and I'm waiting it drying before topping the coolant off again :)

I’m pretty sure that I need to do the wishbones on my disco 3, did you find that the steering was vague and the front end would do it’s own thing over undulating surfaces?

Its was on the motorway that from time to time it gave me the feeling that when I made the expected tiny corrections it either felt like it didn't steer or drifted left or right very slightly. I actually thought I'd fallen asleep at the wheel momentarily the first few times it happened.

Over undulations it just made  a racket though.

So I think my Permatex has gone off as it won't seal the EGR thermostat, still pissing out coolant.

A new O ring is available though so I've ordered one £7.24 posted.

New O ring received in double time from BMW Carlisle of all places.

Fitted perfectly, put back together and test OK.

Guess what, even though I had all 4 suspension arms replaced, all new ball joints and 4 new bolts, at a total cost of £540, its still knocking at the front.

It's no longer scary to drive (ball joints both sides and back bush offside were absolutely mullered and it was wandering) and no longer makes an alarming racket over rough surfaces, but over speed tables, there still a knock from somewhere.

So not only did it reward me by pissing out coolant, it's now telling me it probably needs drop links or ARB bushes.

I've still got it running and driving spot on though, so nows probably the time to bail and let someone else continue the work because I am quite honestly no longer enjoying this being on fleet.

I'll sleep on it and probably create a F/S thread tomorrow, I'll only be asking what I paid.

This reminds me of owning my 330d. Just look at them the wrong way and the EGR thermostat leaks!

The fuck is this?

For sure, fuck all off the shelf is going to fit!! No idea where to get the right items. The fitment is so loose its about to fall off as well.

I went to replace the back wiper but the arms is so seized it won't lift at all.

Fail.

Whoever it was that suggested selecting a later model year on the menu on my Icarsoft, thank you, 2006 worked and I got to see all the live data on the parking sensors.

However, I'm a bit stumped. They all click as expected. The fronts detect the garage wall and the continuous beep changed to a hi-lo tone when I put my hand over any one of them. But the backs, while they all click, dont seem to do anything. The left most 2 detect the Saab, the middle is at max 255 but the rear right, which in this picture you can see has nothing obstructing it, says 47cm.  When I place my hand over them the tone doesn't alter.

I still get a continuous beep when reverse is engaged which indicated a fault somewhere.

Do we think its the right rear sensor at fault. It clicks which makes me think its alive but maybe its taken a knock as theres a crack in the bumper nearby.

Any ideas appreciated!

If they're accessible, move the sensors around and see if they still give invalid readings. Because it's giving a return, they could well be faulty but the parking sensor module can't figure out that they are.

Since fitting the Renault 5 thermostat, the temperature has sat almost half way but not quite. I decided to do some more live data of the coolant temperature on a motorway run to collect some wedding outfits at lunchtime. It's just running a tiny touch cool for me at a flat 76 degrees, I'd be happier if it would sit at 82-83. I had the EGR thermostat out to replace a leaking o ring but I reckon it's stuck open. A new one is on order for £29 posted, be silly not to at that price and its also a very easy job.
