No progress report.

Yesterday I awoke with a head full of cold and spent most of the day shivering despite it being a warm day. I don’t feel so grotty at the moment hopefully I’ll get finished.

I filled up with oil and installed the cable. But I have a problem.

Drive isn’t being transferred from the clutch to the gearbox, so either the output shaft of the transfer case hasn’t meshed of I’ve royally ballsed something up fitting the transfer case or when I reassembled it.

Clutch does disengage when pedal is pressed which is relief. Transfer gears whine so I suspect the output shaft hasn’t meshed with the gearbox properly. This means oil out, transfer case back off and order another gasket.

Having had more thoughts and speaking to a few members of the 205 group on Facebook it may be the output shaft from the transfer case into the gearbox has separated.

This means lifting out the engine and splitting the gearbox/sump assembly to re-attach.

Arsebiscuits.

Now I have largely recovered from what turned out to be a sinus infection which spread to my middle ear I have ordered a cheap borescope to see if I can sort the Peugeot without having to drop the sump/gearbox assembly. I think the sleeve which joins to output shaft of the transfer case to the input shaft of the gearbox has dropped out somewhere in the sump, or become misaligned.

In other fleet news I managed finally to remove the roof bars from the Hyundai. They were severely seized and required much plusgas and the ugga-dugga gun with a long 6mm hex!

Splined connector back on but the (new) gasket is ruined. I’m going to have to get some hylomar or similar as a temporary thing.

The clock is broken and the fuel gauge are cranky on the ones in the car, but I’ll make one good instrument panel out of two. The new one is from a diesel and not a petrol so it may read incorrectly.

Had two days of running around in the 205 and it is apparent the new old stock cable I have fitted is a little too long. No adjustment left on the bellhousing pin & bolt so I may need either to fit a new nipple to the end of the cable so there is adjustment as it stretches, or make a new adjuster, which without machine tools may be tricky. Photos to demonstrate this at a later point, I’m currently in a queue to get into the recycling centre!

I went to Portsmouth with son-in-law and we came back with this.

1.1 with 84k on the clock and 11 1/2 months ticket. History is a bit hit and miss and needs a set of boots and a bloody good service but it’s a nice little thing. Seller spent thick end of £700 getting through a test, gave £825.

Traced a bit of a stutter to what I think is a broken spark plug so I’ll get those and all the service items  ordered and changed. As it has been off the road for 2 years+ it’s also running on stale petrol which won’t be helping.

Saab declared SORN and is now on the driveway awaiting its fate. If someone here wants to rescue it, I have a post in shite for sale, pay what I was offered on car take back.

Over the last week I was trying to find the cause of the stuttering on the Picanto.

Possibly the original plus the centre electrodes were very worn, but the misfire persisted once replaced. The old HT leads were knackered and fell to bits once disturbed, again possibly the originals.

New set of leads purchased from ECP but still to no avail, not helped by cylinder 3 lead being faulty out the box and me hastily replacing and whoever scrubbed off the original markings on the coil packs and writing their own on in crayon didn’t help with getting the correct sequence.

Sequence found but weak spark on cylinders 2&3 so I managed to find a complete ignition setup on eBay for £19, swapped the coil for  cylinders 2 & 3, replaced the dodgy lead and bingo we are running sweetly.

It’s quite a peppy little thing. Just need a decent set of boots on it and the tracking sorted, and then  later an oil and filters change.

All our cars have proved to be reliable.

Rear parking sensors on the Scenic have a mind of their own and every now and then the airbag light comes on. I think this is more to do with the short journeys the car makes as opposed to an actual problem as on a long journeys the faults disappear for a couple of weeks.

Picanto gets a set of new boots this week having nagged my son-in-law to buy some since we got the car in August.

Hyundai does Hyundai thing being the bland modern my stepdaughter needs as a mother with a 9-month baby. Tiny jobs to get it through the MoT I could have done but had naff all time.

205 still reliable though I have git ti change the clutch again as oil has got into the clutch side of the transfer case again. I have another crank seal, a transfer case gasket set and oil & filter. Every seller who’s had a decent clutch kit on eBay ‘suddenly ran out of these m8’ and cancels the sale. Seemingly still listed as available when I search so I may just buy a friction plate from Autodoc, there are reputable brands on there. EBike has take over 100 miles of commuting duty from the 205 since September, that’s the equivalent to two working weeks and that number will increase as I lose more weight.

No news in the last two weeks of any significance.

The Renault keeps chucking up random errors if it’s been sat for a couple of days, more than just an occasional airbag light. I have a really old battery charger with tester so clipped it to the battery.

I put my modern charger on it and within 2 hours it was on 100%.

I checked the Peugeot’s battery and that had the 80% and full lights on so unless that suddenly soils its pants I’ll leave it be.

I also did an organise.
 

90% of my tools fit in here, it’s the smallest Halfords roller cabinet which Mrs_D got me for Christmas.

Also rescued this shelving from the fitters at work, they were going to bin it.

Still have a lot to sort through, I’ve managed two loads to the tip and have a load to drop off tomorrow.

Triple car disaster on Monday. 
 

The o/s/f wheel bearing collapsed on the Renault.

The safety catch on the Kia’s bonnet failed and flipped up while son in law was on his way to work.

En route to Southampton Ikea after we all finished work, stepdaughter’s Hyundai suffered a double puncture - both front wheels.

We got the Hyundai punctures sorted as by chance we were 5 mins from a tyre shop I sometimes frequent.

I’ve just finished the Renault.

Yes it was raining. Yes that is a garden parasol. Then after I had buttoned everything up I went to test drive and the battery was as flat as a witch’s tit. So that’s boiling.

I’ve had a once over of the Kia and it needs a pair of bonnet hinges and the bonnet has a dent to push out. Hopefully the hinges will arrive tomorrow so son in law can get to work.

Bloody hell did you break a mirror and walk under a ladder at the same time? 

Hats off to you for dealing with it all very swiftly - especially wheel bearing in the rain, that is misery right there.

You may have seen the rather wonky bonnet on the Kia in the photo where I was working in the dark assembling the Renault’s steering knuckle back on the car.

After some 30 minutes faffing and adjusting I managed to get a replacement bonnet hinge bolted in and the bonnet fitting almost right.

It’s the most in-line it’s been since we got the car. Ideally it needs a new bonnet as it does have a slight bend to it but a good whack with the heel of my clenched fist and it’s almost sitting correctly. Need to source some plastic or rubber pipe for the washer jets as these are now pathetic and it’s piddling into the scuttle.

Took it round the block; it’s new tyres (Tomkets) have absolutely transformed the way the car drives. Steering is still devoid of all feel as per usual Japanese/Korean chod spec of the era, but it’s a cracking little thing to blezz about in, even if with my ridiculous size I occupy both front seats when I drive it.

130k, drives very well. It’s the 1.6 in this one. Little bit scruffy with a few scratches etc but most of those will buff out with some T-Cut.

Old one grotty but not horrific. Not looking forward to next time. Took over an hour.

Buttoned that up and test drove, no leaks, lovely and quiet, so I went onto a much more civilised car to give a basic service on.

Hyundai oil filter was nasty. Air filter surprisingly clean but new one installed for good measure. I managed to get both filters done well before the oil had finished being sucked out so I had a cup of tea. Overall 15 mins to service.

Use Febi Bilstein parts this time as on offer with Autodoc. 2 cars serviced, ≈half a 20l drum of oil used. Total cost for the two was around £45.

Those done I plugged my 100% legit* Delphi into the Renault, I wanted a) to clear the service light and b) see what fault codes were on it.

nearly all codes were for handbrake actuations and permanent. Handbrake works fine.

Rear parking sensors have a permanent short or open circuit, most research points at this being the buzzer being faulty or having a bad connection. I’ll get a good working buzzer and have a look another time. I need some nosebag

I have decided at the end of the month to SORN the 205. I don’t get much more than weekends at the moment to tinker and do jobs on cars or around the house, the wife takes the bus to and from work so I have the Renault and the pushbike at my disposal.

Jobs to do:

- sort engine oil leaks (rocker cover and transfer case (MoT)
- replace clutch (again) due to said leaks 
- replace handbrake cables (MoT)
- replace speedo drive cable
- replace instrument cluster
- replace or make correct length existing clutch cable (I think it’s too long by about 1.5cm)
- strip and lubricate driver’s window mech
- repair/weld up all front seat mounts (MoT)
- Find exhaust leak. (MoT)
- find sources of water ingress around boot seal
- replace door seals
- sort new knocking noise from N/S front
- replace brake flexis and flush system through
- examine rear drum brakes and replace parts as necessary.
- source better interior
- general underbody inspection 

Some are long term goals but the MoT works would be the best part of a week for me. I don’t work particularly quickly and I don’t have a whole week off until September, when I shall be in Spain, so a series of weekends it has to be.

If anyone knows of a phase 1 (1983-88) being broken without a smashed up dashboard please let me know. I’ll even consider a whole car!
