Well at least it arrived. We had some poor bloke knock on the door tonight looking for his wife's Christmas present. The delivery driver sent him a picture of a random door, then left him to trawl the neighbourhood searching for it!

New pump fitted.

It does pump related things.

No leaks anywhere. Hopefully it stays that way.

hows the flash nissan going

Daily duties, fun but boring.

No, water pump shenanigans aside, it's been providing reliable service.

Front shock lower bushings are in need of replacement by sounds of it.

Basically everything made from that yellow compressed Twinkie cake type rubber has disintegrated with time.

Drove it to the city last night.

Did good though the front suspension needs a refresh, the wheels need balancing again and it could really do with a new drive belt.

Is it better for it? Yes

Well it didn't like that much.

Probably stirred up crap in the bottom of the tank because the pump died on the way home.

Pulled the filter off and got a large amount of rusty brown crap out. Pump ran after giving it a thump then gave up completely. Need to pull the exhaust off so I can reach up and see about pulling the quick disconnects off the underside of the tank. Typically the differential is completely in the way of this task.

Don't fancy pulling the rear suspension off, really. There's crappy access, but it's within sight. There's a straight shot to the one on the right, the left is at an angle but looks possible. I think someone took a length of pipe and made a hollow for the end to slip over and used that to pop the disconnect. I'll do some reading. Either way the tank is coming out because evidently it needs more of a clean than chemicals can do alone.

Cold weather gone, whatever lergy the kids brought home from school recovered from.

Weather was nice and we had no plans so I started on the car again.

20250201_111144.thumb.jpg.89cc01202f931b7fbc0c2c25ce599e53.jpg

Pulled the exhaust off (came apart easily, wtf?), faffed about for a while removing the quick connect pipes. The fuel in the tank started to siphon out of the return which was unexpected. Managed to get the pump running and drained the tank down. Pulled it out of the car.

With the lid removed, the view inside wasn't pleasant.

20250201_113119.thumb.jpg.828f4df8979637cf05f72b68e7fc41a3.jpg

Pump and acceleration splash plate removed, a poke at the swirl pot showed reason for the pump's failure.

Rust flakes and refinery sand. Nasty. Scrubbed the loose stuff off the inside of the tank and flushed it out.

New pump in place.

20250201_142015.thumb.jpg.152e3b73f0b004de36eec6a35327698b.jpg

Threw it all together, added 5 gallons of fresh fuel and gave it a test run. Nice to be behind the wheel again.

Back home with a full tank and I added two marine tiedowns, unobtrusive.

Secured the sub and got it wired back in. Been a long time since I had boom booms in a car. Sounds good. Doesn't rattle the license plate. Well enough for me.

Took the car on a 65 mile round trip loaded five up and it performed really well. It's also faster than a Lincoln Town Car from 50-80. Why do people think these cars are slow? The fuel economy on the trip averaged 20.3 (uk 24.3) so I'm going to take a look at the fuel trim numbers and see what they do- they were a bit off before, around 12%.

Fuel pump definitely is better.

Fuel trims were way off before, now they're right in the zone where I'm happy everything is good.

The radio would occasionally whine and it was annoying. I had replaced the ends of the RCA cables but that was a bit meh.

20250205_171805.thumb.jpg.34afde2996029f4feae0e8097cc8f311.jpg

20250205_172153.thumb.jpg.28ef4001da58cf213bd4a79592710743.jpg

So, I ordered a new set of wires and pulled it all through.

Different behavior; now mega whine, issue is one amp is isolated RCA line level input and the other isn't.

Ordered a ground loop isolation transformer for the sub. That should fix it.  The reason it worked without too much issue before was because the old wire the the sub had no shield continuity, except for occasionally (when it would whine).

Please tell me that manky-looking steering wheel is the next item on the to-do list?   😮

Yeah, it's on the list of things to buy. The sun has killed it. Unfortunately most other wheels are about the same.

Isolation transformer fitted.

No more alternator whine. Incompatible electronics are always so much fun*.

Airbag light. Poked at it with scantool; report of passenger side airbag high resistance and right pretensioner short to battery.

20250216_164825.thumb.jpg.2324e29f96c008252f280d56a0d3797e.jpg

Pulled the battery off, undid the seat.

20250216_164830.thumb.jpg.3f06dd09ba00e87741c7573d9c2daabe.jpg

Pulled all the connectors and cleaned them. That fixed the side airbag (shoulder airbag?) in the seat, but the pretensioner complaint is still there and bringing the light on.

I guess I gotta start digging into that.

SRS module recognizes that it's open circuit when I pull the plug off so that's not the fault directly. Placed an offer on another belt assembly. Hopefully that one works.

Also ordered two new shock mount bushings for the front, that's now going clunk over bumps.

Lumpy misfire at low RPM on the way home tonight. Got home and plugged the obd2 in.

MISFIRE CYLINDER 6

INJECTION SYSTEM FAULT

RUNNING CONDITION DAMAGING TO CATALYTIC

So, went pull the plugs that Google reckoned might be cylinder 6. One was a bit darker than the other but neither were bad. Swapped the plug positions and got the same errors.

Swapped the coil packs.

MISFIRE CYLINDER 7

Bingo. Went grab a spare coil pack from the other engine. Started up, no errors.

20250221_171454.thumb.jpg.95aede8aeb691bd27ff93e09285e1c46.jpg

Took a closer look. Ah. Well yeah, all the sparks would have been leaking out there. In the bin it went.

Steering wheel was a bit unpleasant so eBay to the rescue.

That was remarkably easy to change.
