Don't celebrate yet. It's coming apart again because I misread the manual and I'm not sure I reset the VVT correctly.

Worst part is going to be getting the hood off.

In from the top. Access is good. From the length of things it looks like this engine bay had been penciled in for a v12. The 8 looks lost sitting in the space.

I think there was a Daimler Double Six/V12 version of these.

X308 is a facelift of the X300 model which did offer a V12 version. I used to own one years ago

Not in the US market. It had already earned Jaguar a bad reputation as an unreliable, overheating, underperforming engine in the US during the XJS era.

The engine was designed well enough for the UK but as soon as it got loaded down with US emissions equipment, choking up the exhaust, adding additional parasitic load and significant additional heat to the engine bay, no amount of desert testing would engage the cars as well as sitting in a 40° day on concrete, sucking in the hot air from the car in front of it for three hours in a stop and go Los Angeles traffic jam.

America was also taught to understand that more cylinders = more power. With 4 more cylinders the car should be a rocket ship. To hell with quietness and refinement, I want it to go fast! They didn't. They were refined and modestly torquey but they really weren't much of a powerhouse by late 60's, early 70's American standards. Pitted against Chrysler and Ford it wasn't considered either a powerful nor particularly large engine. It didn't provide instant, jarring torque which the commercials would have led you to believe.

Throw in a smattering of electronics and wiring issues, the fact a vehicle is judged for reliability still on the road well after the MoT man's toffee hammer and yellow chalk sent most to the scrap in the UK, and thus the V12 earned a reputation it would never recover from.

I agree the V12 wasn't very good, that's why I sold mine after a year of constantly replacing coolant hoses, gearbox rebuilds and wiring issues, I'd had enough.

Ordered another washer from a different place after the first place charged my card, said they'd ship, halted the order without informing me, refunded my card and basically went radio silence.

Second Jaguar dealership to get poor service from. Feels like they think it's still BL.

Ordered from a specialist. Shall See how that works out.

Today started out warm and dry, so it's time to take the engine apart and double check my work time!

Pulled the lids off.

20240810_092146.jpg.41f4347194b880fe9b6f96139fecfd73.jpg

Pulled the front cover, tensioned the chain and checked the cam timing. Click. It zeroed out, was about 5° out.

You need three arms for the tightening procedure (why I got it wrong the first time). Managed correctly this time.

Yup, that's correctly timed now.

Reassembled it all and checked it cranks over on the starter. Not bad, three hours from start to finish.

After more time than I wanted to spend in the sun screwing about trying to fix my jack, I finally have the car up on stands.

Next thing is to stick a broom under there and sweep away the cobwebs. Then I'll come back and spray the heck out of the places they come back.

Not to be contrary, but no X308 ever had a V 12 engine.  The X308 entered production in July 1997.  The last Jaguar V 12 was made in April. 1997 and the X300 was the last Jaguar saloon to get it.

Not only that, but America did get the V 12 powered X300 as well as the very late production XJ40 V 12 which proceeded it.

Car Wizard bought a 1995 XJ-12.

Been taking it slow, working my way around the engine undoing things.

Pulled the torque converter bolts out tonight.

Discovered the cause of death of this engine though.

The water pump pulley moves independently of the pump vanes.

I'm surprised it goes in from the side, without removing the bonnet (ooerr!)

Yeah, tape measure showed it to just fit.

BFH was to gently tap the engine off the mounting dowels.

Got all the bolts into the bell housing, got the lower ones tightened up. Got the torque converter bolts in and tightened up.

Started fighting with the transmission cooler pipes, which bolt to the side of the engine with little access, and it started hoying it down with rain, so packed everything up and called it a day.

It stopped raining so I decided to try untangle the complicated mess back here. I have a couple of "no idea" pipes and wires.

As with any fuel injected car that's sat for a while, the fuel pump appears to be dead.

I'll work on that issue another day. Still need to hook up the rest of the cooling system, finish putting zipties places they should be etc.

Checked and it's not the security module because the pump relay comes on for 2 seconds or so after switching on the ignition.

I hear the pump make a muted thump.

Ordered a new pump.
