thats kind of what im wondering! 450K is quite impressive for a TX4, I dont think I have knowingly seen one that high, all the high milage heroes I have seen have been TX1's or Nissan re-engined TX2's

I do gotta wonder how much of it is original still :) is it an auto or manual? if the former, it must of had at least a couple gearboxes I imagine?

@chancer glad to hear theres no loss, It just sounded like it to me it was a purchase of distress, (given what you said about otherwise never getting one again!) glad thats not the case and it was just bought for Autoshite type reasons :)

do you say you will be your last owner simply because it can no longer be plated as a cab once the LEZ kicks in, or because you think it wont pass another MOT?

I mean if its just the former, surely you could Roffle it off on the forum once its plate runs out :) I'd certainly have a ticket or 3 depending on price

the collection caper would be epic* LOL

(I do wish I could test drive a TX before I committed to purchasing one, but I dont see how I could make that happen, no temporary insurance company will cover TX's AFAIK?)

It's a manual.

Go to a cab garage and ask to test drive a decommissioned cab?

aww not so good for London then, I'd still have a ticket or 2 just for the jeopardy mind :) (being a manual is good for track days at least I guess LOL)

how does that work with regards to insurance, do they have some sort of special "test drive" insurance, that insures anyone who takes one of their vehicles out for a test drive?

I rather not get booked for no insurance if I can help it LOL

aye, learnt to drive and passed my test in a series of manuals

everything from a Lada Riva Estate (which I learnt clutch control in) to a modern Vauxhall thingy which I passed my test in, that was alright in its road manners, but crippled me ergonomically

well 2nd only to a Citroen ZX which I was very kindly given the use of for a day, which did literally and I do mean literally not figuratively here, cripple me for about 6 months after I drove it, although that was during a FoD weekend so its a bit unfair on the ZX, as FoD's cripple me at the best of times...

ironically with everything i have driven, I have always had the most pain in my right/throttle leg, its one of the things I fear even with an Auto car like a theoretical TX or automatic berlingo

which is why I would really like to test drive one if I can.

(this is a key problem I dont have with REV,  the wide flat floor, no foot pedals, of a Model 70 means my legs can find their natural most comfortable resting positions, and a fairly soft and compliant seat, certainly compared to modern cars anyhow!)

Hand controls?

My mum (who has MS) used to have a Motability Metro auto with hand controls and power steering. I'd love to see how they got PAS into it, still no idea what bits they used to this day.

It had hand controls and a big knob on the steering wheel: right hand did stop and go on a push/pull thing, left hand did twirly wheel thing. Some clever linkage connected hand controls to pedals.

At that time she could walk a bit so getting in and out wasn't a problem. And I clearly remember being disappointed she'd got a Metro not a Mini, but it was because her wheelchair wouldn't fit in the boot of a Mini.

ATT 955Y (or possibly ATT 995Y).

Not exactly sure. I think it is VM. Cab has been extremely well looked after, never seen one with as many stamps in the service book. Every 10k since 2008

Are you sure it was a ZX? The early Xantia has a drivers seat that cripples me after a few miles.

TX1,2&4 driver comfort varies from cab to cab. The black TX I've mentioned had a great seat but the tilt adjustment was jammed in the wrong position for me. The later blue TX had a pretty shagged out seat but I could get more comfy behind the wheel as all the adjustments still worked. Although banned in Liverpool about six years ago, fitting a Volvo drivers seat was commonplace back in the day.

Would you not be better off looking for a car fitted with cruise control? No TX ever came equipped with it.

1st shift done. Cab is far better than I expected it to be. Had a look and its a VM engine, and enquiries confirmed its all original. It was supllied new from Patons in Glasgow and has mostly been serviced at London Taxis Direct, the place I got the cab from. It drives as it should, the engine makes all the right noises, the gearbox is as notchy as I remembered, its just fuckin great. Initial niggle on first job this morning was passenger window went down when required to allow the windows to demist, then refused to go back up. Just as I entered the motorway for a 6 mile jaunt. Thankfully it was just above freezing outside 🤣. Dropped passenger and went about getting the window up and being able to resume work. Casting my mind back to previous TX's, a good thump at certain points was my first thought. Opened and slammed shut the door, still no worky. Back round to drivers side, 3 good whacks to the door card beside the window switches had everything back working as it should. The shift from then on was trouble free. New window switch has been ordered.

The seat is a curious one. Its original, and i remember from previous cabs that they aren't the most comfortable. But this one has zero padding left, i can feel every part of the frame through it, yet it was still comfortable and caused me zero issues at all.

I just dont get it. These things start out life pretty bad, and seem to get better with age. Its weird, i cant explain it. But driving a TX is an utterly brilliant experience. Roll on tomorrow....

So you can drive along at 25mph with the engine screaming its tits off, whilst having your arm out the window and looking cool as fuck 🤣

Haha, i doubt it will come to that. These things are worth more in spares to keep the ageing fleets going in towns where they dont give a fuck about pollution levels. This one will go back once the LEZ goes live and every single working part will be stripped and shelved.

Think of this as a low cost, no liability thread. Its literally worth about 3 times its value in parts

All TX cabs up here are 5 seaters. No matter what the cab is, we are not allowed to carry front seat passengers. Never seen one with a seat up front. Didnt even know it was a thing. The only time I had 6 in the back was when a family of 5 collected their grannys ashes in an urn. Obviously I hit the extras button on the meter for the extra passenger 😂

TX1's and 2's are worth fuck all here as well. The 4's get cannibalised. Not sure what the availability of new parts are, but i guess its not great. When i picked this one up, the garage had just taken delivery of a brand new TX4 with the 2.5 ford engine. I was a bit jealous

Liverpool won't plate any cab for a front seat passenger although over the Mersey my council will. The black TX was plated for six but the blue only five. Some E7s have a proper front passenger seat but others, like mine, only have a jump seat in the front.

Glasgow will licence a cab with front seats but they dont count for passenger capacity, and cant be used by passengers. The Procab I drove had no passenger seat at all, but I have seen them with a double seat. The extra space when its removed is a big bonus, means there is room for a crate with cleaning materials an such, so they are to hand when needed
