Galaxy Quest is over...

I think it's a little overstating things to say you can avoid crashes by driving better. No comfort to me when my 2CV got smashed into by a Mondeo that failed to stop, nor my friend who was smashed into by a twat in his dad's Honda Civic discovering what understeer was.

I'm not saying you can avoid every single accident, but then you can't with a dozen NCAP stars either. That's the important fact that lots of people seem to forget as they drive, it's like an essay on risk compensation on the roads today.Dunno what happened in the accidents you mentioned, but most accidents can be avoided by thinking ahead better. It's hard work though.Glad to see pog's doing well on his search with that Mitsu  A few years ago I tried a Honda Shuttle (Japanese import) which was similar and to be honest it drove like a 1980s car. Alright if a Morris Ital is your idea of modern, but normal people, wives etc, won't be impressed.

sounds like your trying to off her rather than educate her

And that would be a bad thing because? :D

as I don't know Mrs Pog I'd rather not pass judgment ...just incase like.

Hey Pog, did the missus see your post then? The one about her being a really lousy driver?

mate, if you need a 7 seater get a ford Dorchester or a Rover 800 limo - a pair for sale on ebay yesterday - buy one get one free!seriously though if you need 7 proper seats buy a Mk2 Shogun LWB - you can get a good one for under a grand. Don't buy a Jap import get a V6 UK model - the fuel consumption isn't far off the 2.5td and it is more reliable.

Posted

don't agree. The Toyota turbo diesels have what is basically a Hilux engine.Totally bomb proof.

Posted

Having owned/driven both a V6 and a 2.8TD Shogun I have to say you'd need to be certifiably radio rental to chose the V6 unless you have extremely deep pockets.

Turned up a tidy-looking Galaxy Ghia within pissing distance od Pog Towers, off for a nose with pocket full of twenties tomoz, fingers crossed it will be acceptable.

Posted

Pog - one of the donkeys used in the Shalambraxy has a tendancy to grenade at the 100K mark due to timing chain failiure. I think its the 2.9 petrol, but Google would be your friend here.

What a waste of chops. :x Car was a total shitter, not a straight panel on it, rotten arches, badly resprayed, bald tyres.... didn't even get as far as seeing if it was any good mechanically. Grr!

These do seem to be the only type of vehicle immune to depreciation. Car Mechanic bought a knackered early Sharan for about £1500 a few years ago, turned out to be an utterly shagged out wreck that had been clocked as well. It was probably the worst car they have ever bought. Do you really need one of these large ones - what about a Picasso / Scenic/ C Max size one?

Posted

It was much easier in the old days, you could buy a medium sized estate car and simply put excess children in the boot.

Posted

Thye do indeed fetch stupid money. One of my best results was flogging a 412,000 mile Sharangutang diesel for £1800. It was a right mess too, ex-taxi with comically bad paintwork, rust and lots of problems.

Having seen so many utterly fucked galaxalamsharans over the last few weeks, we got resigned to the fact we were not going to find one.

So started looking at 307 SW's again, small, but still doable.

Oh, hang on, trying to find one of them ain't easy neither. You have to ring up about every one as no fugga bothers telling you or taking enough pictures to show whether it's the 7 seat version or the standard estate.

Then half of the acceptable ones have their back seats missing - "Cheap to replace m8", no they're 250 squids at Peugeot... each.

Whittling the list down, the remnants all seem to be sold by dodgy asian dealers pretending to be private sellers, there's a surprise.

"I'm phoning about the car"

"Which one?"

etc.

waqners.

And when pressed they become incredibly vague but more matey about the service histories. "Yeah it's been done by my mate innit, got the old MoT's though..."

Whatever.

Finally found one today that looked OK, seller seemed genuine, off we go. To Coventry.

Get there, the bloke's not in, great start.

He turns up, start looking the car over, looks great. But oh no, he didn't get a reciept for the cam-belt change. Poo.

And I thought I'd play with that fancy panoramic roof, pull back the blind and FOR FUCKS SAKES the glass roof has got a massive crack in it.

Home we go again, 150 mile round trip totally pointless, the guy must have known it was fucked. What a COCK.

Mrs_Pog says we will have one last look on the web for a weekend and reluctantly I agree.

Within seconds she has on screen a newly-listed Galaxy on eBay 15 mile down the road. Yikes. Quick phone call and off I go again with Mrs_Pog's brother for support.

Amazingly it turns out to be unshit, so cash out, deal done, whizz home.

Pleasing outcome, don't have to spend any more hours trawling around trying sort the wheat from the chaff.

FSH, sensible miles, no taxi evidence, drives bob on, plus it's the 6-speed 115bhp one, 70mph is whisper quiet. Nice.

Posted

Looks alright, glad you've found something at last!!Those PD engines sound like Perkins Primas though.

Posted

Glad you are sorted now, I was just bout to suggest you give up and get a minibus. Torneos are nice, they are not really a horrid nasty dirty evil commercial vehicle.

Posted

Good one. I guess the key is to immediately jump on a good one as soon as you see it.

I've got a 2008, boggo model Sharan from work outside with the 115 bhp 6 speed jobbie in. Genuine poverty spec, wheeltrims, no electric rear windows / heated foldy mirrors / cruise or any frippery at all. Boggo non-metallic blue.It goes rather well for a big old bus, I've been a passenger in an Alhambra 115 bhp doing a sat nav 115 mph happily for about 40 minutes, so don't doubt that this 'lightweight' one could match it. Even though it's lived a life as a hire car cab it still feels pretty fresh and doesn't rattle. Nothing has fallen off and other than needing a clutch at 30k it's been totally reliable. The old 2.3 Zetec ones used to be amusingly quick, the VR6 4wd ones can do mental things if you're brave enough to try.Good buy, Pog.

I was going to suggest you come over and take this abandoned low zorst Voyager home (in the night), too late I guess!

Good call Pog. A few years ago five of us rented a Galaxy TDi for a few days, and called it home while we marshalled on the RAC Network Q Lombard Wales Rally GB (or whatever it was called that year). We ate, drank, slept smoked cooked and farted in it for four days whilst ragging it stupid round various muddy Welsh forests....it never missed a beat despite being loaded to the gunwhales with sleeping bags, stoves, food etc etc....superb motors.

Posted

That looks much better than a 307SW.I like the 115bhp PD 1.9 and six-speed combo (from MkIV Golf GT TDI experiences).

I am gonna give this car a proper good wash-up & polish tomoz, and whip the seats out and give them a steam clean so it is mega spanking. Mrs_P is well pleased. While it was a good price for a good Galaxy, it's still alot of money for an 8 year old car, but I suppose if we did ever want to sell it we would get decent coin back again. Still this is the price you pay for having massively fertile balls. That's the car sorted. Just need to move house now. 4/5 bed house found, can't get in it till Oct, which gives us a bit of time to find the extra money required.
