I had a set of cheap led spotlamps fitted to a zx and they were amazing! Too bright infact on b/a roads with tons of road signs everywhere the light bouncing back was blinding 😂

But on a dark quiet night I felt like a rally driver 😂 I'm sure I had a muntjack think twice before darting out over the road too but I could have just got lucky

That's my biggest complaint about the headlights in the Volvo - retro reflective signs are downright blinding.

I had a pair of 150W spots on my Lada Niva and it was always kinda funny when you switched to main beam and the entire world for about 1/2 a mile seemed to turn to daylight.

We did have a lot of deer out our way and they definitely helped me spot a couple which I'd otherwise have been oblivious to.

It'll get a full one.  And I'll let you know the price when I get it back from the specialist....

I had to go to Stoke on Friday and the roads are appalling! You have my sympathies. I honestly have no idea how I managed to get out of there without cracking a wheel!

My dad has a a Mercedes CLA200 and has gone through 3 front tyres in 2 years. Usually when I clean it for him, I spot the bulge. Nearside every time. But he doesn’t see the potholes until it’s too late. Brothers cracked a few rims on his 535d. I don’t really have tyre related pothole damage because I run the highest profile tyres I can get.

After noticing the new rear shocker leaking on the drivers side, I picked up a set of shockers again with the intention of taking the others back next week. Options for good quality standard shockers are limited. The PR2 are now naff, or there’s “All makes” which I’ve heard bad stuff about, or there’s genuine, which are much more expensive. So I’m trying these All Makes.

IMG_6141.jpeg.6bd869d518eeab9adfb9530b3788778d.jpeg

that shocker is just under 12 months old. I kind of wish I’d just rebushed the old ones.

also found the offside level sensor rubber has broken

yay. Fixed that with cable ties.

So after fixing my suspension many times it is dropping the air out of the bags over night. The culprit? leaking solenoid valves

IMG_6212.jpeg.3980d99edb6ca87d98d61fe8b1bf9906.jpeg

they take 30 seconds to remove so I bought a second hand pair off and eBay breaker for 25 quid…. Which dumped all the air out of the left side over night.

yay.

now I need to send these back to the seller, find another set all before going away Thursday

Coat/pot the top of it with epoxy resin then let it cure as a temp bodge?

Been quiet on this one, which usually means things are going OK. But obviously I’m here now, soooooooo

We went to convoy in the park last weekend and left around midday Monday. Got a mile from the campsite and lost drive at a set of traffic lights right outside donnington park.

IMG_6760.jpeg.2f4932255126a276eaa211b1d63882b6.jpeg

luckily rolled it back far enough to get traffic past.

IMG_6762.jpeg.2b1fcabf9c6a95357d22dfb8f3b19ed6.jpeg

AA called, family put in a safe location. 2.5 hrs we were stuck there. Only about 48 miles from home.

IMG_6761.jpeg.31b1198a6c7d72efe0a2dfd37541121e.jpeg

first time on the big taxi.

IMG_6763.jpeg.1c3991300cf4a740bc43a04590b1ce1e.jpeg

this was a “safe tow” to get us off the lights. We were taken to shardlow services on the A50 and dumped in the car park. AA said next relay 5mins away.

IMG_6764.jpeg.44162ab095850052be8f17cedac70295.jpeg

and hr later and I got bored, I lay underneath and buggered about with the transfer lever, box had slipped into neutral and needed wedging in with cable ties and hopes and dreams. Got drive back, hooked up and got the hell outta dodge. will fix that this weekend maybe.

so later that evening after a stressful day, we went to the pub for a carvery. On the way home I could smell burning. It was boiling hot outside. I had the side lights on and the AC on. The burning smell was melting electrics. It didn’t go away when we turned off the main road away from traffic. Luckily not far from home. Pulled on the drive, smoke coming out of the grill.

set to disconnecting the battery and pulling the front end off, only to find no melted wires. The only thing I found was a seized AC fan. So I’m going with that one. Disconnected that and it’s back to running ok again.

Land Rover heritage, innit.

Our 1955 Series 1 decided yesterday, after we fiddled with settings on the carb, that it would provide no spark whatsoever. Still trying to figure out why! It's always something.

By most sensible measures, Land Rovers are bloody awful things. But at least on the older ones the fixes are usually fairly basic. Disco 2 is definitely as new as I'd risk.

I was with a group of friends in the response group at LRO last weekend. One lad has a tdv8 Range Rover. Lovely thing. Got me thinking about taking the plunge and buying one…. Until Monday morning when he posted up a picture of it loosing the content of the sump through the turbo and onto the floor. Yeah. Nah.

Just had a recount.

Either I can't count, or they've been at it again.

Not six, it's seven 🤷

This week I R unemployed. While I’m between jobs, I intend on sorting out all the small jobs on this discovery. It still runs and drives, but the list is as follows

- service

- boost leak

- intermittent lack of power

- fog light replacement

- tidy some shit up

its blowing a fecking gale outside, and I hate changing oil on windy days, but at least it’s not raining.

first things first, there’s a sound of rushing air under acceleration which was quickly diagnosed as the intercooler to manifold hose.

IMG_7221.jpeg.ac9fb6fa9e20e5379c276b355b73d938.jpeg

nice split there. No one local stocks a replacement so I’ve ordered a boost hose kit off Empire tuning which is coming tomorrow.

IMG_7226.png.938dbd90d7cbecdd43ce86fcfedcf570.png

I’ve bodged that for now, by applying rubber pipe and cable ties to save complete failure.

also, one bolt was missing from this egr pipe adapter that the hose goes on. I’ll probably need to make a new gasket for that.

IMG_7223.jpeg.3dd39de4d7e4b73cd0bb852aaa675a2e.jpeg

it’s a bit dirty down there

IMG_7224.jpeg.b34b0f0874a7e081a816ab7184453327.jpeg

next up was checking the turbo vein wasn’t seized. There was a stiff spot, which has been suitably squirted with maintenance spray and now pretty darn free.

That pipes deffo seen better days. And the rest of them are proper squidgy

that’s better.

service completed. Then the rain came in, and hasn’t stopped all afternoon so now I’m in the garage buggering about with car parts etc.

Todays jobs included

- coolant and brake fluid change. And a health check which exposed a lower ball joint and a calliper that will need replacing soon. Expensive but (hopefully) worth it.

boost hoses arrived this afternoon

IMG_7257.jpeg.55884b0cbe5fe20cf01b428cf0c3b7b3.jpeg

here’s the one I bodged yesterday, which didn’t work

IMG_7258.jpeg.f50ddaec6bf71b1bef2f298f945e854d.jpeg

the turbo pipes removed, the metal pipe was a bit rusty so covered that with rust converter before refitting.

and what is it with silicone hoses? The moment you touch them they’re dirty. Looks like they’ve been on for 12 months already
