The Vicar Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 I wonder if this would be a stupid idea, as someone with no experience at all of veteran cars. https://www.donedeal.ie/view/38370549 Biting off more than I could chew perhaps. Anyone any experience? fairkens 1
The Vicar Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 https://www.donedeal.ie/view/38512261 I am very drawn to this lately too. It’s very rare and very interesting as an original Irish, built-in-Ireland, right hand drive car. A pity about the paint because it looked like this until 2019: yes oui si, alf892 and lesapandre 1 2
somewhatfoolish Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Horrible paint, why? 16 minutes ago, The Vicar said: I wonder if this would be a stupid idea, as someone with no experience at all of veteran cars. https://www.donedeal.ie/view/38370549 Biting off more than I could chew perhaps. Anyone any experience? GIB! Pre-war stuff means owners clubs are the main source of spares. @barrett may have some words about owning things this old.

Yank fans often seem to be of the opinion any old American car should be LOUD AND PROUD with all the two-tone paint, stick on rockabilly tat and confederate flag stickers they can lay their hands on. It usually looks shit. MrFarkinBasz, somewhatfoolish, lesapandre and 3 others 3 3
somewhatfoolish Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 As opposed to being a nice old CKD Plymouth assembled in Ireland, which was a lot better off in what I assume was its original Doom Blue colour.
The Vicar Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 I saw (and bid) on the Plymouth at an auction back in August. Sounded sweet, and the paint job was from what I remember very well done; not a cheap blow over. Which just adds to my confusion - why? I do think it could be salvaged still. For a start I would paint the rear quarters and that area between the front doors and wings cream like the rest of the lower half. Asimo, somewhatfoolish, Dyslexic Viking and 1 other 2 2
Dyslexic Viking Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 It was so nice before that paint job, I can't understand that someone has chosen to ruin such a nice car. Wibble, lesapandre, ETCHY and 1 other 4

'Get the passengers to pay for extending the airport' seems to work well, from their point of view. At least it paid for the auto landing system so landings on (the many) foggy days are possible.

The Vicar Posted December 12, 2024 Author Posted December 12, 2024 Anyway, a somewhat disappointing result last night for the Figaro: Corrosion! I was very disconcerted, and the tester obviously picked up on it because he settled me by telling me that it was only a very minor hole, and that the car is otherwise perfect. I managed to get a look this morning: it really isn’t very big at all, but I am still a little disappointed. Booked in anyway for a retest next Wednesday. On the bright side, everything else is in very good order, so says the tester and the results of the test sheet. Brake/suspension imbalances etc all very minor. The Vicar Posted December 15, 2024 Author Posted December 15, 2024 Well, I’m back. I haven’t bought a car but I’ll know in a day or two if I have: 1935 Model Y, same owner since 1966. Has been idle since 2004 but by the looks of things it only needs very little to get motoring again Zelandeth, captain_70s, lesapandre and 19 others 21 1
The Vicar Posted December 18, 2024 Author Posted December 18, 2024 So for the time being the Ford is a no-go. Got a text from the seller this morning to say that they aren’t quite ready to sell it. Understandable, and I kind of saw it coming after listening to the owners son on Sunday. There might still be a chance to buy it in the new year and we’ll keep in touch. I just hope that when/if the family does contact me I’ll be in a position to buy it. Chatted to the Plymouth seller today and while we’re not a million miles apart in monetary terms, it’s also a no-go. I left my offer with the seller. I don’t like the colour but like I said above I think it could be improved. I think I would really like to own it regardless, so we’ll see how that goes.. Lastly and most recently this is the newest consideration. It’s a 1950 Hillman Minx. I really want something old, and there is a lot to like about this one but it just doesn’t appeal to me like the Ford does. Hard to believe that this is 15 years newer. It looks positively ancient. Anyone got any opinions/experience of these? hard to believe that this is only two years older than my Jowett.. yes oui si, martc, Angrydicky and 1 other 4
captain_70s Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Odd, the next generation of Minx launched in 1948. That one looks to be a late 1930s model - Postwar cars had an enclosed boot at the back. Perhaps it started it's life abroad and was imported back in 1950?
