I am sadly inclined to suspect that J69 is right. Although I am unwilling to admit that in public, as I think to do so would basically legitimise all sorts of wanky legislation ideas that would ultimately deprive me of the main thing I enjoy doing with my life, i.e. arsing around with old cars (including driving them from time to time). If your main source of recreation and entertainment was to be suddenly outlawed (or placed out of your financial reach) on 'environmental' grounds, when until then you thought you werent doing anybody any harm, it would make me question whats the point of being alive TBH. If arsing around with old cars is suddenly unacceptable, what else may suddenly fall into the same category? Drinking alcohol while cooking a meal? Fell walking? Travelling in general? These are other things I like doing just for fun, which could just as well be deemed bad news for the environment, and thus would seem equally as valid activities to prevent folk from doing. But if all non-necessary activities which had a negative impact on the environment were banned, basically people are no longer living their lives theyre just operating as machines. Probably being a bit dramatic there, but i would be well upset to find what is my hobby, effectivley banned. I think if you accept that old cars do become 'eco-negative' once they get beyond a certain age or mileage, which i suspect they do, thats a real concern.Tell you what though, I remember an article doing the rounds in the car mags a couple of years ago where someone had done an environmental impact survey of assorted vehicles and come to the conclusion that the Jeep Wrangler was the 'best' - its simple construction/ease of repair/long lifespan meant that despite its lousy fuel consumption it had the lowest overall carbon footprint or whatever it is. It sounded a bit wobbly to me but I enjoyed reading it.

I agree with mr b but at the moment i feel like my enjoyment (my car) is being slowly taken from my reaches due to costsince i owned the car a tank of fuel has gone up £15 and the extra cost mean that i have had to knock little trips on the head a lot morebut in my defence i can't really drive little cars i'm 6ft6 and unfortunatly if the size of the car increases so does the engine LOLanyway i guess for now we can afford to keep our cars but for how much longer i don't know Josh

If we take this argument as far as it can go, surely ANY form of transport is eco-unfriendly? Maybe the human race should be exterminated for the sake of the enviroment?

As Mr Bollox put it, the whole "environmental crusade" is the thin end of a very large wedge. If our so called "world leaders" were serious about "global warming", the most effective way to do it would be to limit popunlation growth . I see no sign that anyone in high office has had the balls to champion that particular cause! We could make a start in Britain by scrapping child benefit [or whatever it's called this week] for any single person with more than one child, or any married couple with more than two.

^^^ Quite. There's an argument that says over population is the biggest problem facing the planet. It seems to have some support from The World Health Organisation too.EDIT: Someone appears to have beaten me to it! Another one of these ^ added

It's affected me too. I'm into old cars as well.I did my first basic LCIA in 2001 and it happened to be on a car. To say I was shocked at the outcome was a understatement because it stood against everything I believed in.

Dude, we make up less than 1% of the global population over here. I doubt scrapping child benefit will even register :DAs an aside, China did try to limit their population by imposing the one-child policy in '78. The outcome was 'little emperor' syndrome, illegal abortions, child abandonment, infanticide and now an ageing population that they are struggling to support.Ethics can be a bastard.

whats an lcia :?:

Life Cycle Impact Assessment. It's the part of a lifecycle assessment (LCA) that shows or quantifies the environmental impact.

If half the population disappeared overnight I wouldn't be too unhappy.

The whole argument is based on the fallacy that cars, and in particular old cars cause damge to the environment, that is perpetrated by politicians who see motorists as a soft touch and can therefore claim to be doing something when it is just an empty gesture and achieves nothing. The whole of the EU contributes about 12% of total emissions, and that includes some of the 'dirtier' factories in the newer Eastern European members. US air-conditioning systems (it takes more energy to cool Californian buildings than to heat them) Chinese power stations and Indian steelworks are the real culprits, next to thiem it would be impossible to measure the effect of a small number of older cars and tax them penaly as a result. The trouble is that there is no-one to put the case for cars. The Association of British Drivers tries hard and deserves our support, but they have difficulty in countering the reckless claims made by the fat cats of the global warming industry. I hope that I have done my bit by putting in a complaint to the BBC about the bias shown on a Radio 4 interview with nutty professor James Lovelock, who claimed that 'old bangers' were a major cause of global warming. So, don't let any nonsense like this go unchallenged but keep at them.

I heard that nutty professor too Alfisti, and my ears did a double take when he mentioned 'old bangers', but when thinking about it again in the whole context of his interview, I believe he meant cars in general as opposed to electrics, hybrids and the like. Especially as the gist of his argument was; the Planet will be fine and will sort itself out, but people are fucked. Too true.

I see that Lovelock has done his bit to ruin the planet by his mrs firing out 4 sprogs.........hypocrit

After a skinfull of industrial strength European lager I'd be up for putting the case forward to Mr Brown.......

How much does welding contribute to global warming? I seem to do more of that than driving these days. :D

Do forward walking crabs have a bigger carbon footprint than sideways walkers? What about the overdrive? Significant questions that cannot be overlooked.

The only way to save the planet is the extinction of the human race , capitalism and environment issues wont mix , you cant have a growing economy and not produce more CO , China is the biggest worry , give everyone there fridges and new cars and we are all fucked ( nothing againt chinese BTW ) My answer to all this GROW MORE TREES and stop cutting rain forests down , Trees IIRC tend to help get rid of CO Oh sorry , cant do this we need more wood / land to grow food , to feed the ever growing populusMedical breakthoughs whilst excellent if you need them only add to the problem , 75 years is nothing nowadays whereas 200 years ago id be a gonner by now so more population kept alive longer , more CO This is probably all bollocks though as i know nout really , felt good putting it down though

GROW MORE TREES

i planted 6 the other week and will be planting more to split the garden from the neighbours flock of sheep :D

We had our chimney swept this morning, as it's unlikely we'll be lighting the fire again until the autumn and the guy who does the sweeping loves old cars, particularly my old Wartburg!Having done his "funky stuff" with the chimney he accidently spilt a SMALL amount of soot on the rug in front of the fireplace, in which I was stupid enough to walk in...... is that a REAL "carbon footprint"? If it is, mine appears to be a size 8 Dr. Martens..... (Or have I misunderstood this?)My Wartburg is a 2 stroke, which is supposed to be an environmentally unfriendly engine, but I've never quite understood why this is!

If arsing around with old cars is suddenly unacceptable, what else may suddenly fall into the same category?

If it's anything like Demolition Man, we'll just have to live underground whilst the people up top drive around in GM concept cars and go to Taco Bell. Sounds a bit lousy!I'm concerned about anything that is considered outside of the scope of "ordinary" people being clamped down on to score environment points. Most people seem to live pretty simple lives when it comes to their free time - I suspect going shopping, out to the pub/clubs and a holiday abroad every so often is enough to keep the bulk of people happy. On that basis, you can quite neatly cull most "hobbies" in the name of the environment and not upset the bulk of people as few seem to have a passion that extends further than watching some tossers skating around on TV.The frustrating thing I find with the environment is that fiddling around with half-arsed measures and all this "carbon credits" type nonsense is stopping worthwhile things happening. Why are people in towns going on 30-mile round trips to go to some out-of-town retail complex to do their weekly shop? How come I still have to go to an entirely different town to do a job that I could do from the desk I'm sat at now? I can walk round town with an empty crisp packet for 10 minutes before seeing a bin, what's all that about? The river is full of old trolleys and washing machines - is littering not to do with the environment now? Can't we sort things like that out? It's easier for people to point at an old car and whinge about it than look at the bigger picture. A lot of the more hardcore environmentalists are starting to have more of a voice, so you get things like new government buildings with no car park to encourage people to use "alternative means of travel", i.e. you have to drive further before you can park up and walk the rest of the way.
