j-j Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Nice colour I think... marry? I say fuk! For some reason I thought these countryman types were all beige - was this just wishfull thinking?
VWPowered Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 wasnt it HLS's etc that were beige, i maybe completely wrong as i only remember only ever seeing green Countryman's and this ones red
Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 At Perkins in the heritage thingy theres a big display picture of a Peterborough-registered 1988 Monty turbodiesel in front of the onion domes in Moscow. When it was launched a couple of geezers from here got one locally from Marshalls the Rover dealer and drove it there as a bit of a publicity stunt.I am not sure about this 100mpg claim, I know the non-turbo van was advertised as being capable of 72mpg if you drove at a steady 50 or something, 100mpg sounds rather hopeful TBH! Maybe if you drove at a steady 40 with the wind behind you in a straight line on a totally flat surface with the tyres pumped up to 60psi you might just crack it.
Cavcraft Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Think the engines were made in Peterborough which would explain the above a bit.
hammy Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 My Dad had a white Montego 2.0D Clubman estate given to him as a company car in 1993, registered K203 SGG which replaced his BX19 TGD estate. From the day he got it, to the day it left when its replacement in the form of a 1996 Mk3 Golf arrived, he hated it and drove it everywhere at full pelt, I remember a few things about it.1) It couldn't half shift for a diesel, not so much torque but raucaus accelleration followed by a huge cloud of black clag from the back to distract enimies in a Bond stylee. I remember once being in the car somewhere near Hanger Lane, some barryboys next to us at the lights in an Uno - the old man revved the Monty up to full chat and dumped the clutch as the lights turned green - a massive wheelspin and before we knew it we screamed past a stunned looking Barry leaving them in the cloud of diesel clag. 2) It ate a headgasket everytime it went to Germany, the first time My dad went alone on business, I suspect Bimmer chasing down the autobahns did it no favours. The second time was a family holiday in 1996 when the headgasket went again, again after a period of exceeding 100mph. The latter incident requried recovery from the motorway on the back of an ADAC truck, how we laugh at the photos of the oil covered remains being loaded up.3) It netted my dad a speeding ticket for going into three figures on the A47 near Norwich, he was done at 103mph but claimed it was showing 115mph on the dials. £500 fine, 6 points and a trip to court convinced him it was a foolish idea to repeat this. 4) I also remember him pulling a handbrake turn in it along the seafront carpark in Calais for no real reason, I found it funny but my mum and sister who were also in the car did not and both issued angry slapping to his head.5) It was rusting after two years, not helped by my dad refusing to show it a bucket of water & soap for most of the time he owned it.6) Mantles were the worst Raver dealer in history, they often cleaned the car but that is no substitute for not addressing componant issues. Luckily it did allow for a huge variety of hire cars supplied by the lease company including a Golf 'Umwelt' estate which had odd electrics including when you flashed the headlights, it caused the blower to start working. We also got a Tempra Estate, what a weird car that was. 7) Above all, my dad hated it, it was terrible, noisy and not that durable but it was fun, and out of all his cars I remember it being the source of much amusement all round.
dollywobbler Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Think all the Countryman estates were generally British Racing Green or a sludgey brown. Beige was restricted to the pre-facelift ones IIRC. I do know a chap who owns a Perkins-prototype Montego TD estate AUTOMATIC! I want it, which is a bit alarming.
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I had one as a company car at Unipart in 1994. It was a very good car capable to impressive (for then) MPG and they were so reliable. Mine was the Cuntryman in a metallic dark brown with beige velours on an L plate.
AnthonyG Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Early Metro HLEs were advertised as being capable of something like 82mpg, which you only ever get close to if you drove one round a test track at 27mph in fourth for about 5 hours. They stopped putting the claim in the ads after this was pointed out. Never heard of 100mpg, sure it wasn't an engine on a test rig or something? Perkins Prima was regarded as an excellent engine in the 1980s.IIRC first standard car to do 100mpg was a Daihatsu Charade diesel, the second version that came out about 1983. I remember an ad or brochure where they drive round the world in one.
Lankytim Posted March 30, 2010 Author Posted March 30, 2010 I thought all Countryman's (Countrymen?) were turdblowers but AFAIK this ones a non-turbo. Im expecting it to be a bit slow, Im assuming its the same engine that went in the Maestro, and diesel Maestros are slower than the 1300cc petrol variant. Seller recons it goes like the clappers though.Im trying to get a few quotes from Shipley.com but its down for maintainance!
warren t claim Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Unusual to find a non turbo example.IIRC British Aerospace had hundreds of these, in fact any late saloon will be an ex BA car.Is it a 7 seater?
Lankytim Posted March 30, 2010 Author Posted March 30, 2010 Is it a 7 seater?Yes. GR9 4 SHITE FAMILY.
Pillock Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Are you sure it's a cuntryman? It seems to be the wrong colour, and lacking a turbocharger. Possibly the decals stuck on to a regular 7-seater? I just remember the Countryman being "launched", they'd got one in the dealer in Lincoln and I had a brochure for a while - green or brown, I'm convinced.
Milford Cubicle Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I thought all Montego diesels were turbo-charged.
dollywobbler Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I thought all Montego diesels were turbo-charged.Probably find that the original engine broke, and someone just lobbed a Maestro one in!
Lankytim Posted March 30, 2010 Author Posted March 30, 2010 Without looking at it I cant say for sure but the seller says it is. Its got electric windows and sunroof, "walnut" on the top of the door trims and the Countryman decals on the rear quarters. Plus it says Countryman on the reg plate, didnt you notice in the pic?
lancashireclamper Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Unusual to find a non turbo example.IIRC British Aerospace had hundreds of these, in fact any late saloon will be an ex BA car.Is it a 7 seater? The army had a lot of the as 'staff cars' (presumably for junior ranks) I bought mine a 1994 example in 1999 off a dealer near Manchester who had about 6 of them, all with ex nato documentation, still got details of its military reg no somewhere.
Pete-M Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I think the Countryman looks good in that metallic green...I'm no fan of diesels, so I'll STFU about the engine.Mate of mine killed a succession of beige 1.6 HLS Montenogos back in the early '90s. He worked for a Rover dealer and wanted one, so he bought a nice one and killed it. He then replaced it with another beige 1.6 HLS that had been an Northern Irish private hire cab previously and wasn't the best, but it didn't die easily. Eventually the scrotes nicked it and torched it.Eventually he bought a blue G plater. He didn't like that one as much as his beige ones.
Cavcraft Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 To be fair the n/a ones were no slouches and would pull an LDV200 about quite rapidly.
eggy Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Id love one of those, last one for sale locally though was grand which i thoght was quite steep. In the woods beside my house theres one cut up and buried by some tinks from Leeds who lived on the street for a while before moonlight fliting.
Lankytim Posted March 30, 2010 Author Posted March 30, 2010 A grand?? That is a bit steep!Does anyone know what PCD these are? I wouldnt mind swapping the steels for some type of tasteful alloy wheel. I think MGF items fit.Thats assuming its nice enough to get some new RIMMZ.
eggy Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 i think its triumph, mgf etc and that is 4x95.25 acording to the pcd finder im using
fiatdaft Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 the taxi i got home from breaking my cherry was g reg green diesel estate monty.quality.
pogweasel Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 My strange neighbour, doctor dave doshitall used to have one of these, it was EPICALLY rusty.Chopped it in for a near-new Discovery a few years back which looks to be going the same way.
VWPowered Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 i have alot of friends here with disco's and all have fucked sills, boot pans, man do these things rust for britain, almost shameful in this day and age
hammy Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Talking of Montedontgos, I spotted this beauty in Ringwood on Saturday, local Dorset plates too.
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Hmmmmm, Henley blue!Typically as rusty as an old horseshoe around the rear quarter lights. I briefly worked for an ARG (Austin Rover Group, or AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!) dealer (Nias of Newbury) and remember these fuckpigs all too well. There was a ramp in the workshop known as Montego Bay because it always had a fucking Montego on it having the crank oil seal replaced, a major fault on early ones. The 1300 Montagu with the electronic auto choke was truly astounding, especially in bare arsed sub - L spec in Nautilus blue.Jayzus - those really were The days!

Much quicker than a 1275gt mini.Plus you get the most versatile instrument binnacle ever! First one to name ten cars that used the same instrument cluster wins a virtual blow job off Joanne Guest! (circa 1995)
brammy777 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I tell you what, I used to see Monty Estates everywhere about 5 years ago, my next door neighbour had one in Slough. Typically, it was green. I cant remember it being rusty but then again he also had an A reg LT van which I swear he must have poured salt on. Even the throttle pedal fell off.I barely see any now, I think theres only two Montegos in Basingstoke, one is that MG one which hasnt moved since 97, and the other is a Brown Diesel Estate owned by an old man, he thrashes it!
Lankytim Posted March 31, 2010 Author Posted March 31, 2010 The rear arch repair on that blue Mongo is virtually seamless. Great colour match too. I wonder if whoever did it somehow broke the quarterlight too?Humm, other cars that used the same instruments as the 1300cc Montego?Maestro,Metro,Rover 213errmMaestro vanMetro vananother maestroDo I atleast get a virtual wank, or a "virtuwank"?
