Granada Scorpio.

Last night I spotted a tidy looking H reg Scorpio in silver parked by the side of the road with a for sale sign in the window, £450 ono. According to the write up it has four months MOT, three months tax and FSH. It's also got cruise control, CD player, Electric windows, power steering etc. It looks very smart, probably old giffer owned (it was parked outside a giffer complex). Anyway what sort of prices do they go for, and what are the things to watch out for? (as you can probably tell I don't know too much about blue ovals)Thanks :)

I saw them going for about £1K for a fully loaded one about 4 years ago. 100K on the clock, used as minicabs by the look of it.

Sounds good - just make sure that everything works and it isn't hiding chronic rot around the front struts or rear of the sills. Is it a 4x4 or RWD DRIFT0RZ special?

What was the mileage and what engine size is it? 2.0 or 2.9? Nice old things to drive, especially in V6 form.£450 doesn't sound like a bad price to me.

Was it a Granada Scorpio ?Or the weird looking "Frog" Scorpio ?£450 sounds about spot on, especially with nice fat leathers.Like already mentioned, push every button and twist every knob.If everything works then it sounds like a good deal.

H reg so it's a Granada. The froggy ones dropped the 'Granada' tag.£450 seems a reasonable price to me, what engine is in it?

DVLA says 2933cc, so the 2.9. Not sure on the mileage, I did try to see but it was too dark. I'll go back today and get some better pictures.

Looks ok, as mentioned check the rear of both sills, and the compliance bushes on the front TCAs wear quite readily. The 29s can sound a bit rattly from the top end and the idle speed control valve can sometimes cause iffy running (surging at idle) but a squirt with some brake cleaner will sort it. Leccy windows and central locking can sometimes play up, but again quite easy to sort out. :) If it is tidy it looks good for the money.

Very comfortable, piece of piss to drive, surprisingly quick, but it was a Ford so some people get a bit sniffy about the image. I like them very much and an estate is even better.

I like these. As mentioned, check the sills (and around the rear trailing arm mounts), rear arches rot but otherwise any that have survived this long tend to be ok. Check the boot floor, obviously. The 2.9 V6 isn't a bad lump, asthmatic and buzzy at high revs but there's really no need to rev the buggers anyway. Some 2.9s had highbollock tappets, earlier ones you need to attack 'em with the feeler gauges every 10k miles or so. They don't like cheap oil, but everyone seems to run them on it and it kills the camshaft. Auto boxes aren't super strong, but giffer ones should be fine. Should engage drive / reverse without a big thump - but they do engage pretty swiftly anyway. If the oil isn't burnt and smelly the box is probably ok.PAS racks can leak, front bushes can be weak and they can eat front discs if thrapped everywhere - again not normally an issue with giffer spec jobs. Shocks are often weak on 'em, but that just adds to the waterbed feel. Front ARB bushes often go as well, tap the brakes lightly on a test drive (with the window open) and you'll probably hear 'em. Listen out for clunky rear cv joints, full lock at low speed will expose 'em, as will a weird clunky vibration that only appears at 50 mph ish at first - beware though, Granadas all suffer from a little bit of propshaft vibration - I've had about 15 and they've all had a little bit of it, but normally at motorway speeds.Fuse boxes can suffer from water ingress and cause all kinds of electrical mayhem, but that's more a bugeye Scorpio problem than a Granada one.Radiators can balloon up and split, but that's unusual on a 2.9.Make sure the ABS works, the brakes are powered instead of servoed on these, you should hear a little bzzzzt click when you turn the ignition on. Pedal should be quite firm with a minimum of travel before they start to bite.I like 'em.

Shame it doesn't have a towbar, would have been a good car for you Pete!I went and had a quick look at it today, unfortunately forgot the photos. It's actually in very good condition. The sills are solid with no evidence of welding. There are 74,000 miles on the clock which must be genuine. The only bodywork damage seems to be a few small scratches on the bonnet consistant with car washes. It was an auto. The only down point was that it didn't have a leather interior, the seats reminded me of MK3 Fiesta items! They were in good condition though.

I'm surprised it doesn't have Leather, I thought it would have been pretty much standard on the top end Scorpios. I had a 1985 Scorpio 4x4 years ago C742 KJN i think.... I loved the car, but had a lot of trouble with the 4x4 running gear, wind-up etc. It was a fairly tired example, had been used in a smash n grab, then sat on a driveway for a year before I got it going. Mind you, it was free so I wasn't expecting too much :) Sold it in 1998 with a buggered gearbox and fillered-up wheelarches for 500quid, which was actually good money at the time.

Its not unusual for the scorpios not to have leather, it was a 'no cost option' to have the velour trim instead lol. Which some people prefer.they will still be electric, and the rear bench is also electric in these.Nice old barges, you should defo BUY IT! You wont lose money on it iof its tidy anyway! WIN 8)

Must say I hated these, but I was in need of a cheap runner and my Mrs being a Ford whore twisted my arm in to buying one off ebay for £70. Was a J plate 2.0 dohc Ghia auto, fabric seats but all electric and heated, cruise, AC, multi changer, everything. Few mnths tax and test too. Over 200k on it but a full history up to date. I loved it, really loved it. Never been so shocked in my life at how good a Ford could be. When the MOT loomed I hunted about and picked up the facelifted version in that lovely mid metallic blue. Totally recommended.

I can certainly vouch for their strength and bulletproof mechanicals because last night a 3am I witnessed a stolen F plate 4x4 destroy a parked Pug 307 by launching it 20 foot onto the pavement! The only damage to the Granada was a bust radiator! Even then the engine continued running at 4000rpm with no water in it for over 20 mins until the fire brigade drew lots to see who would pull the LT lead off to stop the engine!.

I had a gloss black '86 Scorpion with the rev happy 2.8i Cologne, 4 speed Gaytronic box and the grey lower cladding. It was like a motorised settee and it had proper '80's style DFS velours.Supreme ride comfort and effortless waftage - I had mine in 1992 before they became really Council. It would be tough choice between one of these Monkeys and a cheese grater Senator which I always thought was a really superb looking car and better than the 'inflated Sierra' Grandad.C921GWL is doubtless long, long dead.

Hey Warran, that reminds me of a mate of mine. Many years ago he had a car repair business and used a Mk1 Granada as a debt collection tool. One customer wouldn't pay up and always had an excuse everytime my mate went round this chap's house. One night at about 2am he went round in the Granada saw the chap's car on the drive, drove into the back of it pushing it through the double doors of the garage collecting bikes and lawnmowers in the process and out the back wall.Only damage to the Granada were a few dents on the massive chrome bumper.Nothing was ever proven but word got around. If a customer didn't pay in reasonable time he threatened to bring the Granada round.Never had a bad payer again.
