Free 1970s Porsche barn find. Its a 924!

Its an X reg 924 thats been in a barn for 10 years. So as suspected, its the crappest/cheapest Porka possible.

That's unlucky as they only started galvanising the bodies on Y-reg! Bet it's totally rusted through.

Rather underwhelming experience it was though....

I can vouch for that, I was hoping for some kind of performance, and while they handle like a mk1 MR2 (they don't feel heavy at all), the 2.0 is not fast in the slightest.

So its the shittest variant of the shittest model. Cant complain I guess!

I had a beige 924 Automatic ages ago, it had shite tyres on it which made it fun to drive even with the miserable lack of power!Sell it to me Tim!

A 924 is the only Porsche I have ever seen in a scrapyard with a 'Council - This vehicle is abandoned and will be disposed of' sticker on it!

Stepdad had a beige X-reg 924 in the late '80s:

DVLA suggests it's still around, on a SORN but now black.

I seem to remember the interior being more of a tweedy material, so there might be further disappointment on that front. It would occasionally get used to cart all four of us around - not a pleasant thing to sit in the back of as a lanky teenager...

Just remembered this

which has been off the road for 20 years and in that garden for at least 12, so there are old 911s out there rusting away.....

Is that car viewable on streetview? Still in the same spot? Shame to see it like that, i do reckon I'll own a 911 at some point.

Wheeler Dealers at 6pm on Discovery Turbo - Porsche 924!!!

Just returned from picking this thing up. Collected it from a lovely couple who own a lovely old farm. They seemed very grateful that I towed the old thing away for them! The guy had kindly inflated the tyres and dragged it out of its 10 year hibernation prior to me arriving. It took a good half hour of hammering on the rear drums to get them to free off, even then they were a bit stiff. After the 10 mile A frame home the Porka is rolling around nicely and the trip even cleared the front discs of rust but im too scared to try the hand or footbrake incase they dont release!

Unfortunately its too dark to take pics but ill get plenty tomorrow. Its absolutley thick with dust and cobwebs.. Patina I think its called? Yeah... its got stacks of that!

First impressions? Well for starters I cant find any grot, ive been all round inside the wheel arches, inner wings, floors, sills e.t.c with a torch and the worse I can find is a bit of surface scabbing on the rear arch. Amazing. Im expecing to find something that writes it off as a viable project but so far bodywise it seems excellent. It IS galvanised BTW, must have been one of the first.

No idea if its going to run or not yet, although the engine isnt seized. Its done 199k but its had a new engine at some point. Im expecting the fuel injection system will need some tinkering before itll work properly.

Project? Breaker? sell as it is? Dunno. Who can say no to a Porsche though, even if it is a LT coupe.

I cant wait until the morning when I can have a proper poke about!

Weren't you worried about the tyres on the trip home?

Yes but over the phone they sounded in good nick, unperished and with good tread. Infact they look brand new, they are atleast 10 years old of course.

Defo looking forward to pics on this one - take loads!!

Ive always been taken those killer tyre reports with a pinch of salt. Admittedly I had a blowout with the Allegro because an old tyre fell to bits on the M6 but I think that was more to do with it being a budget make (SAVA- MADE IN POLAND) than the age of the tyre. The tyres on this Porka look very new, they still have the bobbles on and would deffo pass an MOT- they dont even have any cracking on them. If I choose to get it on the road however ill be changing them.

I did the Mallory sprint at Retro Rides 2007 on 37 year old Goodyears C800s. I got a right kicking off the bloke at the tyre place when he ran the production code by the bloke at Goodyear. He had to 'get the old book' which is never a good sign. They were OK in the dry (they squealed like fuck, it was like being in a Richard Conte car chase scene) but fugging lethal in the wet. I worked this out when I went across two lanes in terror fighting the colossal understeer on the A56 at 20 mph.I think the two rear tyres were some wank 155 \ 80 Barums or some jizz. They liked to spin a lot as well.

Well done Tim! Shitest version of the shitest Porsche bla bla bla. I had two and while they were no ball of fire, they were good fun, so top bloke for rescuing it. My second one had a load of faults, but most were due to lack of use and easily fixed with WD40 and Glock gun oil* Parts were not unreasonable too. GSF of GFS of GSXR or whatever. You know what I mean!Once again, well done chap!* don't ask

I like the 924's myself and look forward to the pics too. I'll have to pop over for a look sometime. Are all these cars at your house Tim?

Well, I must say, I'm a bit of a tyre-whore too. My Rover 25 came from the factory with Dunlop SP200 tyres, which were adequate but prob the cheapeast MG Rover could get at the time.Got pissed off with them @ 9k miles so changed for Pirelli P600.SHITE TYRES. Gave them away at 10K, got GoodYear Eagle NCT5Never looked back. I dump 'em @ 3mm cos they're 70% worn by that stage. My Rover gets driven hard< both by me and Mrs Ash, who now has a BMW330CiMtechwhatthefuckTwatTronicGreat tits, though. (Mrs Ash, not the tyres)
