Renault 21 Monaco - misfiring

Well, now she's road legal, I'm treating her to her very own thread.Drove her to the test this morning, my first chunk of wheeltime in the car, and it was lovely. Slight issue with the clutch pedal and I was a bit alarmed to discover that someone had removed the thermostat (!) but drove nicely to the test and then managed to get a pass too.The rot on the sills/wheelarches just about survived a poke with a sharp tool, but at least now I can do the car up as I use it. Currently being serviced but aside from needing a pair of rear wheel cylinders, it seems fine. Just hope that 'stat wasn't removed for a reason...Moar pics to follow, probably tomorrow.

Gr8 News, Glad there's one back on the road! :D

Oooh, thanks Trig. Though I prefer to think of it as brown rather than Oak Bronze. Cripes.

Nice one Wobbler. Welcome to the world of road-legal R21 ownership - a world I will be leaving for a while this weekend when my Turbo runs out of T&T - my current financial situation means that it may be a month or two before I can get it back to legality again. Will we be seeing the Monaco at Larling over the summer? Let me know if you're going to be coming over in it and I'll bring the Turbo and we can compare leather interiors... 8)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Get a room, you two...................lovely pimptastic interior though

Nice one, that is one lush interior! :P

"Not-a-lot-of-people-know-that" fact about the R21....It was possibly the only car ever to offered for sale in the UK with a choice of 4 different wheelbase lengths depending on whether it was the transverse engined 1.7 or the longways mounted 2.0, in saloon or estate form.

Bet you can all sleep soundly knowing that shite fact now! :D

Wobbler, I forgot to mention the thermostat! It was removed because the top hose split and had to be replaced with that blue samco hose from a 21 turbo which doesnt have the bit to fit a thermostat into it. Dont worry, it wasnt overheating beforehand or anything like that!BTW, what was the issue with the starer?

Posted

Starer? Confused! Thanks for the clarification of the hose Tim. Puts my mind at ease. The 'stat seemed to fit in the hose just fine though, so that's where a new one now resides.A quick query for you Tim - any idea when the timing belt was last done? Not sure what the interval is on these but I'm a touch nervous.

Posted

The starter wouldnt kick in, remember? Starer/Starter, you know what I mean!Ive no idea when the cambelt was done, but I think the guy who sold it to me said it was "ok"Id get it changed soonish.

Posted

Oh, starter! T'was knackered, so Mr Reno sorted me out with a replacement. And the replacement glass. And he helped with advice today too. Thanks Mr Reno!Drove home really nicely - much better when the heater works! I'd better get that cambelt changed though...

Well im very happy its back on the road and being enjoyed. Had it not appeared on the autoshite radar it would have been furnace feed months ago.

Aye - couldn't let that happen! Even though my track record of 'saving' cars usually backfires horribly (like the Bond, which was too expensive, cost me a fortune and has now turned into a ropey Saab and the Bedford, which is generally rubbish)

Posted

So is this going to feature in a centre spread special edition of CCW?

Posted

I wish! Sadly not everyone shares my sentiment that this is the best classic car ever built. Actually, even I don't believe that, but I do like it.

Gr8 machine - and suitable colour to boot. Get dem sills sorted!! Seeing that R25 clubhouse interior brings back memories of seeing a similar pic of a R25 interior in a brochure but also showing the awesome dashboard. I think it was the same plush leather but all I can recall is that I wanted that moAr than anything in the universe at the time (I was about 7  ) - love the shape of the arm rests.

That's bonkers!! how much did it vary? I take it it was to do with the front axle line? Renner have had a history of 'funny' wheel bases after the 60s-70s cars with different length rear suspension arms to make sure the wheel base was the same on bosh sides (due to one rear torsion bar needing to be fixed ahead of the other)
Posted

Great news that another old Renner lives on! Never seen the interior of a Monaco, so looking forward to some pics. I always liked the brown leather, it seems somehow a bit classier than the usual black leather, as in my 25 TXE.

Posted

The estate's wheelbase was longer than the saloon for the same engine, but I don't know the details. I believe the 3 and 5 door R5 had a similar arrangement.

Posted

awesome great to see its finally roadworthy their spa, shame our 21's had crappy blue fabric crap interiors, that leather looks amazing 8)

Posted

I thought Renaults had different wheelbases side for side, I certainly remember something like that from my Observers books.

Posted

the nevada has longer rear doors than the saloons 8)

Frustratingly, it isn't March yet, so the Renault is still without tax, meaning I can't go for a drive and enjoy it. Even more annoying, it isn't showing up on the MID due to my useless insurance company, so it looks like I'm going to have to actually go to a post office. Rubbish!

So, I was forced to get the polish out and clean the ol' girl up a bit, before giving the leather a good clean and condition.

Those arches need a good sorting

Speakers were shyte, and I only had these boy-racer specials knocking about. They're so daft that the grilles don't fit, but at least they're colour co-ordinated. Sort of.

Aye, thought we had some Linseed oil somewhere but apparently not! That's the next plan...

Looks great, theres a really nice 25 Monaco near me,the colour suits it(Mocco brown)And on the subject of seats,i think i,am right in saying that the V6 safrane seats where and still are the most luxurious seats made by RenaultFronts where fully electric, with memory and heated, also came with the six inflattable ergomatic option with sections which inflatted!!the rears where inidividual electric seats with both base and back being electrically adjusted as a 50/50 split, amazing!

Mmmmm, that does look very good indeed. The wife still says she wouldnt drive it- evAr, even in its MOTd and polished state. Im beginning to think our marriage is a farce.I bet that 21 will provide years of trouble free service, I just get that feeling.

Posted

I don't know about that Tim. Older cars always develop issues. The clutch pedal still sits too high, so something is amiss there. I also need to get that cambelt changed PDQ and with French electrics, knowing what will fail is always a guessing game!

Nice to see some good photos of it, she looks good! You should of got up earlier this morning and got down the post office, my 02 has been on SORN since November but i went down this morning and got the full 6 months tax, happy days.
