4+e boxes are generally regarded as more economical as they have longer gearing so make ideal motorway cruisers, but acceleration is usually slower.

I fitted one to my Scirocco as I was doing a lot of motorway miles and it increased economy as doing 70ish on the motorway was about 3k rpm instead of 3600rpm .... The thing was you had to rev the hell out of the engine to get decent acceleration. Changing it back to a close ratio 5spd is still on my to do list.

Richard - they fitted 4+e boxes to various things without badging them formel-e

Sounds par or the course for what you're asking. Carry on...

THE ENGINE IS MINT

No it's not, it's black, and you seem to have filled it with lead.

That Taunus is an oddball.

Looks like the bastard child of a Hillman Hunter, Audi 100 and an Opel Rekord.

This is nice:

£5600 on http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C71931/

Were they officially imported to the UK? I'm not sure.

You know for sure you'd be the only one turn up at a show in one of these! 8)

I've always liked that generation of Taunus. It was a fair bit bigger than the Cortina, IIRC, so perhpas we should have got that instead of the Mk4 Zephyr? I think both were replaced by the Granada. As for being officially imported, I think not. I'm pretty sure it had to be a special-order. Look at the big Opels of the period too: Germany was actually getting it right.

Freddie: couldn't agree more!

See, been an Autoshiter since before it was invented! I paid a whole 75 quid for that car. That was a lot of money to me. It was a bloody good car too.

Yugos are bloody rubbish. A family friend was a franchise holder for these in the 80s. He used to count the days off on the calendar until the warranties were up. My next door neighbour bought a new one from him, and the engine seized in a week (oil pump failure). It shed its passenger door on the M2 Belfast bound, the sunroof blew off. It was killed by an electrical fire.
