Inca-mpetent's shite; Ruby, part 4: Just when you thought you found all the rust.............

I have a soft spot for those, plus its a 2.0 which is a touch more rare. Good luck sorting the aftermarket immobilizer, they can be a nightmare sometimes.
I'm gonna be honest, I may end up not selling it.

I love these cars

Update: The car is now named Ruby.

How familiar are you with the electronic side of things on the SDI engine?

I've a (currently, hopefully) minor gremlin that I've been trying to get to the bottom of and have been struggling to get any interest from so called specialists.

Intermittent fault which comes and goes.  Doesn't seem to be affected by any external factors.

Sometimes the rev counter will surge, showing erratically too high engine speed.  This is definitely something sensor related rather than a fault with the instrumentation as it only happens when the engine is loaded.  As soon as you come off the throttle it drops back to an accurate reading.

You can feel that power delivery is less smooth when the fault is present too.

I don't know where the engine speed signal here is derived though, so not entirely sure where to start looking.  The only OBD reader I have won't connect to the vehicle either so I haven't been able to interrogate any realtime data to see if I can see any obvious smoking gun.

Unfortunately, not very  familiar, yet.

My own rev counter likes to remain at 1000rpm when the ignition is turned off, if the car has been idling.

If you turn the ignition on again, it drops to 0

What's the engine code? If it's ASY then it's the same engine as the Mk1 Fabia and other A04 cars. Might be worth a punt checking on Briskoda etc to see if anyone has had something similar. :)

AYQ, which is a configuration unique to the Caddy/Inca I believe.  Know the 1.9SDI was widely used, but this exact variant didn't go into much.

Sticky mechanism, the stepper is not returning to datum point at all times during use.

Off/on forces it to do a hit-the-stop recalibration.

Fix: lubricate the mechanism.

Real fix: ignore

Ruby is the priority

It has become a feature at this point anyway.

Some parts acquired, including a timing belt kit, rear lights(rare AF), seatbelt holders, an alternator (saves me having to pay to have mine rebuilt) and a host of other stuffIMG_20220625_104347.thumb.jpg.558d83d76327db944f573f69812112aa.jpg

I see this as an absolute WIN!

This whole lot was €160

Time for another quick update (Sorry, I'm bad at keeping up with socials)

I knew Ruby was a rusty lass........
The arches needed work.

The work on the arches has started now, but when prepping, a LOT more rust was found.
IMG_20220816_134029.thumb.jpg.d18ac2037bd7561e467001ef2839da49.jpgIMG_20220816_134031.thumb.jpg.d04fa75759bf14bba5e9051b5dbe83a5.jpg

Anyway.........while trying to get to the trunk floor, I also found the metal sill that holds the tailgate rubber, was starting to stop existing as well.IMG_20220816_134026.thumb.jpg.94b3b7b643a97a9bcb03af8b2b61b8ed.jpgIMG_20220816_134020.thumb.jpg.b0764ef83c272f91001189237feb5b75.jpg

For now, that's not the biggest issue, so I slapped some rust converter on it, which will be done by tomorrow

There's also the issue of the insulation around the bumper......which got wet at some point......you can see where this is going. tomorrow.

Did someone order their Volvo "extra crispy"?

In other personal news(for who is interested in that): I'm going back to trade school, get my mechanic's license.
Now, for this, an internship is needed.

.....I applied at Tesla(they had a spot)

It's a waiting game from now on

I absolutely love the dash and control layout on these, it's so purposeful and "all there". At first glance I assumed it was a volvo bus!

Mmm, a 1995 480 with orange indicators and LB-plate. What colour does the handle of the oil dipstick have?
Green

It's also a 2.0

It's pretty amazing indeed.

I love getting information from a car, and the Volvo has me covered.

Coolant temperature, Oil temperature, fuel consumption (average and instant), range, average speed, outside temp

And let's not forget the digital fuel gauge

I also love how well readable it is!

I wrote a chapter in this book about the 'quality' of that place.

Loving your 480!

NedCar designed and built!

And thanks!

the proud bit comes from the fact I am from The Netherlands, and that one of the IMO most beautiful cars ever made comes from there

Oh that's interesting. It's the same design as the whiteblock dipstick, but the whiteblock one is red (both in my mates 95 850 and my 00 P2 V70)
