Ah, nice to see it over here too. Hero story behind this! (or the joy of taking a gamble?). Is it pretty much alright then?

Bit of welding, bit of exhaust, and possibly maybe a wheel bearing? Will have a proper look sunday

I love this car, You took a gamble and it paid off, Well done to you!.What does it go like?

from what i remember of mine it was sluggish til about 2200rpm then went like you stuck a red hot poker up a horses arse

Very nice. Used to be one of these a few streets away from me in the same colour back in the mid 80's - I remember being fascinated as a youngster by the way the fluted plastic round the rear was carried on down the front wings.

You absolute legend! Cracking car. What is the power delivery like? I remember reading the mid range is pretty good...

A little raggy? Looks bloody mint! Well done that man, that's a gorgeous car and I suspect quite fun to drive :)

Rare. Especially in this condition! Can't remember the last time I saw one of these on the road.

Can't see anyone dissing this. One of the cars in my top ten I want to own at some point (probably).

I had a Fuego GTX once. For about an hour.Bought it from Carr Mill auctions in St. Helens. A legendary place, Carr Mill, it's one of those auctions where cars go to die. Used to be rammed full of pure Autoshite chod twice a week. An auctions where in the early '90s you could still pick up Mk1 Granadas for £100 with MOT. Where handpainted Avengers and Marinas would mingle with ex-taxi Cortina Mk5s and Peugeot 305s. The last resort of the petrolhead looking for anything with a bit of mot and tax for a couple of hundred quid, but you couldn't be fussy - everyone there was just after wheels, nobody cared what they were attached to whether it be a rough 3.4 Jag XJ6, a '80 Astra 1.2E or indeed a purple Renault Fuego GTX with a slightly smoky engine but loads of MOT.Auction starts and the Fuego is the first car that manages to make it to the rostrum without needing jump leads or a push. Auctioneer starts the bidding at £100. No hands, he tries £50, still nothing, eventually someone offers £20. A flurry of hands later and I'm standing there with my arm in the air and the auctioneer is pointing his hammer at me £120. Bang! Hammer down. I appear to have bought a purple Fuego so I go off, pay the man and go to collect my new wheels.Quick inspection and it seems ok. Smoking a bit, but I suspect it's been sitting around for a while. 80k on the clock and the engine sounds willing enough if a little bit hesitant to rev. It's taxed and tested and the tyres are legal. Full length Webasto sunroof on it as well.Set off home and I'm doing the customary button pressing thing. Seeing what works and what doesn't. Lights - yup. Brakes - yup. Steers straight enough, hmm, buttons on the steering wheel, what do they do? Fiddle with the buttons and a light comes on on the dash - looks like cruise control.. surely not? Bit more fiddling and it's heading down the East Lancs at a happy 70 on cruise. Excellent. It's got electric windows, and they work!. Central locking works! Radio even works. Wipers, yup, Back wiper, yup. What does this one do? *Press* Next thing I know is there's an almighty rush of air and a huge bang. Glass everywhere. The rear view mirror has gone black and there's a large amount of sky where the roof was. I'm still doing 70 mph, on cruise, and it's all gone Pete Tong. I'd opened the electric Webasto roof at 70 mph, it's come off its runners, flown up in the air and because it's still attached at the back of the roof it's swung around and gone straight through the huge rear window. So I stopped at the next payphone and rung the only Renault pervert I could think of (and he had a rusty Fuego 1.6) and sold it to him for £120.

Love that, what's the story behind the purchase please?

Posted

It goes well considering its barely been driven over the past few years. I probably paid to much for it considering there is no MOT but who knows what these things are worth?

Cant really be bothered go go into full detail of how the purchase came about as its much easier to just post a link

For sure I didn't like these back in the day but they're rare enough to be interesting nowadays. Along with Scirocco's they use to be group tested against S12 Silvias. :DI saw an incredibly clean Black one at Tatton Park Show a couple of years ago.

Last time I saw one of these was by the side of the road in Northumberland looking sad and abandoned after a bump had taken off the back bumper. Great save :P
