You don't even need that. A 'captcha' thingy in the registration process should defeat bottage, and would mean it could also be automated so genuine crapcarphiles are not excluded.

This version of the forum is flawed, and spambots can get around it no problem.I run these type of forums for car clubs as part of my full time job, so know the tricks they use.

I've used this same forum setup before and with a couple of add ons I had no problem whatsoever with spammers. Regardless, the fact is this forum isn't set up or managed properly. It's ridiculous that I had to go to Freds temp forum just to get back in after changing my email address yet spammers can hop on and post pages of porn threads without any problem. Bottom line: The 'management.'.. if you can't manage to keep on top of this place then get some help in! There's plenty of people who are on here daily who are willing to help.

As the spare forum has automatic approval/activation I thought there would be spammers aplenty in minutes. Apparently not, so the simple captcha code seems to be doing the trick. it's not like the bots don't find it too, a mate who opened a Granada forum got a spammer in days.I think this forum is on Admin approval, so I think it was a genuine human mistake.I would moderate too, if need be. Looks like it would only be a case deleting spammers anyway, I haven't seen any of the usual bitchiness or keyboard warrior antics you get on other car/van forums (even, recently, my own!).

The spare forum is phpbb3 is it not? This is the old phpbb2 in here, hence the flaws in the registration process allowing spambots in.

Actually the spare forum is phpBB2 as well. I was trying to knock up a forum double quick and didn't want to be getting used to the differences between 2 and 3, so went with what I know.

A good trick i've seen used to good effect is a registration question.One i've seen just says "What is this (4 letters, goes "quack")" and shows a picture of a duck. The other just asks "Are you human?" and gives a yes / no radio button, defaulted to "no".

I know of one forum provider where the user first of all has to sign up with the provider and then join one of the forums it supports. So you register with the "main dealer" as it were then join the forum you want by posting on it. In my experience this completely defeats bots as the forum of which I'm a member hasn't been a victim of spam once in over 3 years. If this forum really has 40,000 or so members as the front page suggests then I can't imagine how you administer that.

I used to be on Vauxsport, and they made me and about 30 other trusted people moderators. I've never once seen spam on that place.

I signed up once but as one of the 'owners' and I didn't quite see eye-to-eye (to put it mildly) I rarely visited it.

I knew some on there who were great people but a couple were absolutely full of shit, as well as fucking know-it-alls and smart arses.

I'd go along with that. It happens now and again but it's always dealt with reasonably quickly- it's not like they swamp the forum for weeks on end.I'm quite happy with the way the forum is run- if I wasn't I'd go elsewhere.

Yeah, I haven't been back for the same reason. See loads of threads started as 'FAO: someone'sname' and then the message read about how great their night was or how great their car is - fucking hell, leave it to a pm or something. Just a lot of brown-nosing, and lots of Total Vauxhall nonsense.
