W reg, Mondeo TD Ghia. 130k miles, FSH, supposedly as new.I'm tempted to buy it just to smoke about in for a few months, but can't work out what it is actually worth. Gonna go and have a look at it shortly, so gimme a clue folks. Ebay has gone mental, stuff was dead cheap a month ago and now it's all gone!

Anywhere between £500 and £750, I'd say.

I'd imagine between about £500 and £800 depending on condition?

He wants £650 for it, but reckons it's absolutely bull-buggeringly mint.To me, this doesn't seem that cheap, but I've scoured ebay etc and the ones on there for £500 look like proper 'howl at the moon' dogs.

If its good then £650 sounds reasonable to me. Ghia spec is a reasonably nice place to be although that'll be cloth trim rather than leather won't it?

Posted

Aye, it'll be cloth, but it'll have AC and a few choice toys.Gonna toddle off and have a squint at it in a bit.Don't even know if it's a saloon or hatch. I hope it's a saloon!

£650 is fair I reckon if it is mint. These are the sort of cars that scrappage has been getting rid off, as often the owners have enough cash/credit history to buy a new car.

on the 1.8 TD?Besides, if it's running and not rattling, it's the chance you take.

TIMING CHAINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tensioners fall off, with resultant carnage.

Might just be the 130's then [hangs head in shame]

1.8TD 'Deos get a bad press but they drive fine, are Gr8 m'way cars, good on fuel and reliable. A bit laggy and agricultural but fuck me, it's six and a half hundred quid. That's £995 on a forecourt.

Yeah but the eBay ones might not have sold don't forget. Personally I think £650 is a lot of money for a Mk2 as you'd probably score a Mk3 for not much more if you could be arsed waiting round for one to show up.However if it's mint and what you want then it's worth it.

It's about as close to a sensible car as I'm ever likely to own.I'm gonna have a look at it, after scanning the classifieds all day I'm amazed at how much cars are being advertised for...

I know what you mean !As soon as i had enough money to buy a half decent or even "fix 'em up" motor prices seemed to go WOOOOOOOOOOOP (noise for up)

£650 is a fair price, I'd happly pay that for one as a cheapy, In fact i have done a couple of times. The 1.8TD's are a good motor, pull along quick nicely and with the Ghia spec it will have all the goodies as well, The Ghia's even have cruise control on the later petrol ones, Not sure about the Diesels though, What colour is it?It might be worth doing the cambelt and injection pump belt as well, They won't cost much to do and are much cheaper than fitting new valves when it breaks.

There is a Mk3 in my local paper (wirral News) for £595 with t+t and its a Diesel.

What, even without cracked bumpers? Price sounds about right, they don't get much lower than that until they're tired and scruffy.

Well, just went to see it. It is a saloon, bodywork appears to be absolutely immaculate, no rust anywhere, one piece bumpers, new tyres, engine sounded healthy enough, interior was mint other than the carpet was holed where the previous female owner's heels had gone through. Also the service history ran out at 75k, which doesn't constitute FSH on a 136k mile car in my book.Seller (trader) wouldn't budge from £650 so I walked away. I'd have given £500, maybe £550 for it.

But the Mk3 doesn't really drive noticeably better & if you are the kind of person who suffers "plate & shape" snobbery, why would you be on autoshite!!!!!!!!!For a £100-1000 hack, I'd buy the best condition mk1 or 2 I could find - it will be a far more loyal servant than a shagged and abused intergalactic miled mk3.As for this 'gayo - £650 sounds reasonable to me, they are still doing over £1k on arfur daley forecourts, although the weasel isn't wildly popular.

Same as... Missus is seeking a 206 2.0 HDi at the moment - keep coming up against Y platers with 100k at £3000 - what are they smoking?

I'm in the trade, and it sounds that bit too expensive to me as a trade buy. The Mk3 is one hell of a lot nicer to drive - even the TDDi. Thing is, you can get pretty tidy Mk3s from auction for not much more money.Oh, it's not 'plate and shape' snobbery from me, but it's exactly that when it comes to selling the thing on in a few months. I don't want it to last me 3 years, I tend to run my cars for 6-9 months and then sell them for close to what I buy them for. I don't mind paying for servicing them, tax etc, but I'm certainly not going to pay close to retail for a 10 year old Mondeo TD when I can pick up a tidy 8 year old one for the same money and have 50% more chance of moving the Mk3 on in the summer. If I bought this Mk2 for £650 and then ran it for a few months and tried to flog it for £650 when it's time to move it on I'd end up losing £300 on it, because all I'd hear would be "Mk2? Nobody wants those. It's £350 tops".

To be honest W plate Mondeo's are probably the worst built ones. Remember the Diesels could not be fitted with cruise 'cos of the Endura lump. What did it drive like? Were there any bills for a recent clutch change? What were the suspension bushes like?

Posted

It seemed perfect other than the bits I've mentioned.Really bloody clean, but I'm a stubborn old sod. If someone tells me a car has FSH and mint and then it turns out to have half a service history and needs a carpet then I want to knock a bit off.If he'd said it was tidy with partial history, I might well have bought it.

Honesty is the best policy....What colour is it and did it have it's 6 cd radio still?
