weather challenges lead to new prospective purchase

Hmm RAV4s aren't bad... useful diff lock button too. (Or there was on our '95 GX.) They handle really nicely, but a bit thirsty.

Non- turbo Impreza should munch up the miles quite satisfactorily and not at great cost.

My one cost £600 with full ticket last year. It's a 1.8 GL and handles the snow well, limited only by its ground clearance.

In the snow, I use 175/80/14 mud and snow remoulds. They're a bit taller than standard, so they lift it a bit. I was lucky to find them for £10 each new, off the 'bay.

To be honest, if I were you, I'd stick with the XM on good front tyres, and carry a pair of snow chains and a shovel for emergencies.

(Choose a large, light shovel, or you'll regret it of you have to use it in anger!)

1988-1989 spec Cavalier 4x4. When they released the Mk3, the 4x4 was an 'L' spec for some bizarre reason. Grey bumpers, windy windows, the works. Narrow tyres and all, much better for getting through the weather than 205/45s.Sadly it didn't sell much so they jazzed it up to the GSI2000 4x4 or whatever.

Thought that was only when combined with the power of a 2.0 Turbo, in the later Cavalier and Calibra.... in the 2.0 NA base model it should be fine.

many of the "non agricultural" 4x4 systems are sophisticated bits of kit and fragile if not maintained - the 850 AWD system works on a viscous coupling system - fek knows how it works but it requires you to ensure even tyre wear or it gets very expensie to fix. I owned a BX Gti 4x4 for about 2 weeks - got rid of it because of he complexity of the 4x4

yup - that makes sense.....have you considered a career as a physics teacher?also explains why you have to replace all the tyres at the same time - gets an expensive business when you have a damaged one!

I have neither a beard nor brown corderoys.
Well sort it out! I thought that was the uniform code here? :D
