The purple peril had its first run out for 2 weeks today as we have been in Torquay with Eccles. Currently on 122250 miles.

The Purple Peril went in for a service on Tuesday, a decision may have to be made on its future within the next few months as the garage said the front subframe is rusty, a shock absorber is leaking and there's some rust on part of the braking system.

It is up to you, but... a shock is a service item.  Rusty brakes is probably a brake pipe which is the most routine of garage or home if you're so inclined jobs.  A rusty subframe might well be surface trivia or if it genuinely is rotten, it is a bolted on part that can be replaced.  OK a bigger job but not in the league of rotten cars we used to have to do.

Just an opinion :)

Yeah I'm not surprised about the shock absorbers given the age and mileage of the car.

Here is our 2012 Corsa. Does it have rust on the subframe? Yes. Is it a problem? Absolutely not. (Sorry not a great pic, I was photographing something else at the time).

One man's 'rust' is another man's 'surface corrosion'.

A new subframe (or a good second-hand one) isn't too costly on these. IIRC, these use the same subframes as the Fiat Grande Punto too.

The Purple Peril is still going, now on 124k miles. Some scrapes have appeared on the rear bumper by the wheel arch, I'll get them touched in at some point to tidy it up a bit.

I didn't consider our 2012 Corsa dizzle 'modern' but I'll piggyback this thread if it is.

It's failed mot on a few bits so it's going under the knife next week.

Garage quoted £600 for the necessary work BUT new shocks only on the side that failed which upsets my OCD.

New wishbones, struts, strut tops and 4x new shocks plus exhaust came in around £375. Not blue chip branding but not QH/Firstline bollocks either.

Thinking I'll take Wednesday off for Works, most of the bits have arrived now.

The fail for the exhaust is absolutely fecking ridiculous. The outer skins being corroded is not a fail. Just cut it off, there's absolutely no need to replace the silencer :)

I think my mot place has felt the breath of VOSA (or whoever polices it) recently.

I had the 'peeling skin' on my Saab so I just peeled it off and it was fine.

I do have a silencer just in case (it wasn't expensive) but in my experience the exhausts on diesels seem to fare better than petrols. Protective coating of soot on the inside maybe?

More water in the catalysed petrol gases, more oil and soot in the diesel ones iirc.

Just been doing a patch up repair on the o/s/r corner of the Purple Peril after some scrapes appeared on the rear bumper by the wheel

The Purple Peril passed its MOT on Wednesday. Now at 125300 miles, it didn't see any use for a fortnight while we were on holiday

Been nothing to report on The Purple Peril, it's at around 126k now. The Mrs starts a new job at the beginning of next month so while it's total annual mileage will be similar to now it will just be going to one place of work rather than going between clients houses, so that will save wear and tear as the engine won't be started from cold so much

The Purple Peril may be coming to the end of its time with us, it was in at the garage earlier on to get wiring looked at, when the Mrs went to pick it up they told her the underside was going to need at least £1500 worth of welding to get through the next MOT, they advised to trade it in after Christmas.

The Mrs saw a 13 reg red Corsa she liked the look of, BUT it's a Cat C write off, turns out it's got not one write off marker against it but 2, both within the first 4 years. Fuck that for a game of soldiers

Been looking round at cars again, the Mrs has seen a 2019 Hyundai i10 she likes the look of, so we may go to view it at the weekend

Anything mentioned on the June MOT about corrosion? £1,500 of welding seems highly excessive, to be honest.

The only rot points I can think of on a Corsa D are the subframes which are of course bolt-on parts, I struggle to imagine where else could have rotten to such an extent?

The brake servo is apparently badly rusted as well

The subframe was advised at the MOT in June and the MOT last year, I do wonder if they are basically saying the car is going to start becoming a money pit soon so best to get rid now.
