My Fiesta 1.1L - RIP 12th Feb 2002

My brother bought this car for a couple of grand in the late 90's. It was doomed from the purchase date, having had new engines and gearboxes, and costing more in repairs than the price it was bought for. It was then sold to my other brother for 1k, who had continued bad luck, before the gearbox went again, and then it was left to rot on my folk's driveway. I saw my opportunity, and I gained ownership of the car, and then paid for it to be properly repaired. It was fairly reliable after that, apart from a driveshaft coming loose and losing drive. I couldn't open the boot, I snapped the wiper stalk in a rage, etc. I left it in Liverpool overnight while I got drunk, and on returning the next morning, the car had disappeared.

It had been stolen and abandoned on a disused train track in Bootle (near to where that Bulger kid was murdered). The insurance company FAFFED ABOUT for a week, before returning to me to say it couldn't be recovered as school kids had burnt it out. Thanks, you useless twats.

Anyway, it's not often you get the final moments of your car's 13 years:

The kid was 'apprehended', but the police let him off with a warning. :(

 Must've been sad at the time.Still, I wish someone had done that to my old Fiesta 1.1 'Finesse'. Miserable piece of shit.

God that's terrible. They should have tied the little shits to the line.

I have lost a few in me time, and would not like to see the last minutes, didn't go to see the one that was hit by a truck, though had to see it when it was still in France. Heartbreaking.

friend of mine had a bad smash 10 year ago in which his bro in law was killed they were in a capris travelling to work early morning some nutter in a bmw side swiped them capri rolled 5 times travelled about half mile from original impact he went to look at car about 6 weeks later and found his bro in laws trainer and watch covered in blood

I'll never forget going up to Norwich (from Essex) to pick up a drivers seat for my Metro GTa to replace the worn out one in the car. The yard had confirmed they were clean, good nick and definitely for the 3 door. When I got there I was waved over to where the donor 5 door car was, with the stoved in front, to find a wreck with blood all over the dash, instruments and steering wheel. Nice.

Shit, that must have been really difficult seeing the watch/trainer.

I had loads of stuff in the boot. A boxed Atari 2600, clothes, and a 110 quid skateboard. Probably all nicked.

I think that is superb. Just googled the little shit in question and he's meant to have nicked plenty of cars in his time, but there's no mention of him doing it after he was nailed up. So it obviously worked.Splendid. Him whining about it not being fair makes it more amusing. A big thumbs up to the people who did it :-)

Bit of a morbid thread this!, I do think nailing the scam to a crucifix is a good idea though.I remember going to Gun Hill garage in Dedham years ago and seeing a car in the yard there covered in claret all over the dash and seat and with hair still inbeded in the windscreen when they had head butt it, Made me feel sick.

I once had the opportunity to sweep up after a serious RTA, as a recovery driver. A Mk4 Cortina Estate had rear ended a Beetle, and the Cortina came off worst.......crumpling the front door apertures quite badly. Fire/Rescue removed the roof, and when I went to collect the cars, I found a foot under the driver's seat, still in a very expensive shoe. I rang the Police immediately I got back to the workshop, having bought a bag of frozen chips to rest it in for the journey back. I was told that a representative would call in shortly to pick it up, as they would like to bury it with the rest of the driver...............

Nice. Going back to the OP about TWOCing scrotes, one of the local plod round here reckons that 70% of all vehicle thefts & burglaries in the area is attributable to ONE family, who are regarded as untouchable as they rule the nearby "travellers" site. Probably true, when my car got nicked it turned up burned out in the field next to said site, and no-one was ever caught. They do some pretty crazy shit too,for instance demolishing a petrol station to rob the cash machine (it was closed for 3 months and had to be totally re built) or getting caught robbing a farm and beating a WPC half to death. Everyone knows whodunnit, but the feds can't make owt stick, and anyone who speaks out gets tarred as a 'racist'....

Speaking of which - When Pikeys Fall Out:

Not mentioned here, but the pikey herslef was on tv. The cops reckon this is a long-running pikey feud. Some woman was on telly, and I was just DYING for her to ask the reporter "Do you like dags?" :D

Er, isn't Dunmurry the place where they made the DeLorean?

Correct Sir, althogh "made" is a term to be used loosely in this instance.

Did the 'L' version have the rear wash/wipe? I seem to remember some Fiestas were lacking important equipment!

Posted

In about 1986 Ford ran a lengthy advert saying how great they were for various reasons, one of which was the standard rear wiper on all hatchback/estate models. Very soon after that they became an option again.

Hmm the MK3 really was a load of crap. A few years back, a mate gave me a couple of them. The rust in the sills was as bad as I'd seen in beetles 20 years older, drivers seat was about to fall through the floor, rear axle mounts rotten etc etc! Awful cars

Posted

Although in its defence, it had very comfortable front seats, and my 5spd 1100 could cruise on the motorway comfortably and quietly while returning excellent fuel economy. Massive boot too. It did rust like hell though.

I like them. I had an L reg 1.1 5dr and it was quite nippy, pretty good to drive, roomy, comfortable, reliable... couldn't fault it really.

I'm not sure, it's highly possibly it didn't. I could make a shorter list of what it DID have. I thought they were ace to drive, mine was really nifty road corners and felt solid. The only Ford I've ever liked.

The MK3 Popular was missing the clock and glovebox lid, 60/40 folding seats, matching door cards, door bins, wheel trims, cigar lighter and the radio. Oh and the five speed gearbox.Taking away things like the glovebox lid and door bins... what's that saving, £1 per car?The rear wash/wipe was standard on everything except the lowest model (Popular) on the MK2 and MK3. It was an optional extra though.

Multiply that up by 100,000 cars a year.... ;)Like the situation in the US with the Pinto - $10 per car to make them safe doesn't sound alot, but it was still substantially more than just paying off those killed / maimed by design flaws....

I suppose it makes the Pop Plus or L look a lot more inviting too. When was it last possible to buy a run of the mill car with no radio?Edit: seems you still can. A bit of googling turns up the US spec 2009 Altima 2.5, which comes only with "Audio system pre-wiring" and 4 speakers, but apparently no radio. :?

Some late 90s 3 Series came with no radio as standard (can't remember which ones, possibly only the gay hatchback)
