2CV racing with car #48: round the clock again...

The racer did not survive Pembrey unscathed.  Laurence outbraked himself during an ambitious* move up the inside at the hairpin, and was promptly collected by the other car...

So, out with the hammers & dollies while I channelled Mr Richards' metalwork classes back at Dyson Perrins HS in 1979...

It's a race-spec repair because, after the 24-hour at the end of August, the whole car's getting a body-off rebuild and a new galv SLC chassis.  After three seasons, it's earned it.

The A-panel I repaired and the sill that was straightened with a PortaPower will both be replaced.  The current chassis (the original 1992-build platform from a 1975 Dyane) will be tidied up and used in the restoration of Laurence's 1981 Dyane, which he and Ruth used for their honeymoon 27 years ago.

As there are so many blue cars in the championship, we're looking at a colour change too.

Busy winter ahead!

The team is getting close to becoming Autoshite Racing for the 24-hour: me, @Talbot, @Crackers, @juular, @MrsJuular...

Anyone else coming?

😎

Alas at a wedding this weekend so no racing for me! Good luck! I will make it to one one day!

Greetings from Snetterton.  Testing today, then qualifying ('day' and 'night') from 7pm.

First test session done, with the new engine (Scruffy*) which we built up last week, using the pistons and barrels from my Dyane 720 donor; it was running rich, so cue lots of witchcraft by @Talbot etc. with carburettor jetting and so forth.

Scruffy currently being changed for Grey, which had been stripped down for a new crankshaft to cure a mystery knock.

*The engines are identified by the colour of the powder-coating on the outer tinware; the others are Red and Yellow.  Scruffy has none!

Grey strong, but needs more work on jetting.  Tracking being checked/set.  Session 3 starts at 1350.

Session 3 was red-flagged after one of the Minis popped an engine.

In garage 23: Grey out, Red going in.  This is likely to be the race engine of choice, but needs shaking down to be sure.

Each driver will go out in the next session - out lap, flyer, in lap - and we will practise driver changes.

Team manager.

I do all the admin (driver nominations, pit stop reports, etc.), make sure everyone's in the right place at the right time - and get bollocked by the clerk of the course when said drivers misbehave.

OK, interesting* final test sesh...

Something went properly awry with Red, which self-combusted on track.  Laurence managed to get the car back to the pits, where the fire - yup, actual flames - was put out with extinguishers.  The fan broke, took out an oil-cooler feed pipe, which sprayed hot lube over the engine and exhaust - with predictable results.  Repairs are underway.

Better now than tomorrow, I suppose.  Though better not at all... 🙂

Well I don't know about the rest of the team but I'm ready to sleep for a week, and the race hasn't started yet.

I believe we qualified 10th which is extremely respectable.

19th overall, 11th 2CV.  Not bad after yesterday's events!

Yep, didn't realise it was aggregated (is that the word?) between day and night qualifying. We got 14th in day and 10th at night. Today's practice saw the racer jetted even better.

Still a very good result especially after a somewhat spectacular engine fire.

Kicking off soon. Fingers crossed.
