I have been looking for something to tide me over the winter, but am struggling to came up with anything. I have been to see several sub-£1k cars, but they all seem to be absolute shitters! Have the days passed when £6-700 would get you something half decent? I am looking for somthing modernish, with MOT til April at least (tax would be nice), which is small, simple, cheap to run and not too horrible to drive. (No Fiats)I have been to see...1997 Ford Fiesta 1.25. - Had a huge flat spot and wouldnt rev above 3500rpm. - £6251996 Vauxhall Corsa 1.5D - Loads of miles, looked like it had been abused all its life. - £6501998 Daihatsu Move - leaking oil and knocking engine - £5001994 Skoda Favorit 1.3GLXi - Rustier than the titanic, rattling cambelt, sloppy gears - £490I have turned down others just on seeing them.Am I being too fussy, or is there a car out there for me?Help?

'They all do that Sir'. The trim and switchgear fall to bits too, but they just keep clattering on and on. Head gaskets can go but it's a straightforward job and the bits are cheap. It'd need to be a damn sight less than £490 though...

Thats exactly what I said to the chap. I said, 'Sorry, but that's a £300 car.' He said, 'I'm not doing bidding on it' I said 'Bye then'

Have I got shite for you!http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1993-CITROEN-BX17 ... 0349412444Buy a BX! Useful estate, trick suspension and this is a turbo, top-spec one, so GR8 on fuel and surprisingly nippy too.Sure, something will go wrong, followed by something else not long after, but they're great!

My Astra's MOT runs out in six weeks, hmmm...

I know you wrote no Fiats but it sounds like you need a Cinqucento / Seicento Sporting. I'd have another in the future I think...

Honda Civic/Toyota Starlet, Japanese-nice. I'm sure you'd find one that was owned by an old bid who had it serviced to within a dozen miles of its service interval for fear of it exploding if they didn't...or something.I wonder if the choice of car you have been looking at have been typical cars owned by cheap-ass skankers who just want a cheap-shit car without having to worry about actually looking after it?

Good point.Cavette - you happen to be in the opposite corner of the country.

They're out there, just often not online. On a short journey just now, I spied a Rover 600 Turdblowa in old-giffer condition for £525, and a Fiesta on a T plate (whatever shape that is, Mk37.2?) for £600.Obviously not driven them, but the Rover especially i'd be surprised if it was knackered, it looked gleaming and had cushions in the back window. It was all made up for however by a 1985 Porker 924 at my local shonky dealer forecourt.... £2995. And you could see the faded paint and trashed alloys from sat in the car over the road :)

No worries dude. Just this minute taken a deposit on it as it 'appens!Back to your car needing plight have you tried AuoTrader's website? This is the time to look too because anything not sold by now from Thursday's edition will almost certainly have to be re-advertised meaning potential bargains for the sharp buyer.Don't discount petrol engined cars as well as diesels, I'd have thought there should be hundreds of cars within your budget. Try a few one make forums too and have a shufty at their own classified sections, there's usually a few bargains about if you look hard enough.

Come and have a look at our Orion/Escort TD!!!It's out-of-the-box modified, but overly so, and a nice old bus to boot, really ought to tick all your boxes.

One of the parts van drivers at work brought me her latest car to MOT the other day. Black W plate Focus Ghia 2.0 saloon. She paid £400 for it with a short test, and needing a plate transfer. It needed handbrake cables and 2 tyres to get through a test. 205000 on the clock!!! Tidy condition aswell, screwed together tight, and everything works. Bargain!Try one of those for size.

Good work! These little things appeal to me a lot, it's a shame I do so many miles. What happened to your last one?

stupidly we sold it, but I've been watching out for another*, and this came up at our local Preodua dealer, one lady owner from new, never left the area, 32,000 miles, FSH, spare never touched, original tool kit, etc etc.A bit scruffy when I found it, the dealer couldnt be bothered to properly sell it, but was well chuffed to see it gone with 24 hrs of sticking it on autotrader.*Our old one is still going, and is used as a daily by someone who also owns a Porsche and a Golf Gti!
