That's the kludgey fix where the search service, Elasticsearch, gets restarted at 4:15am every night. This keeps it happy by stopping any out of memory errors after it shits itself after weeks of memory leaks. The web server gets disabled during that time as the forum software doesn't like the search service going away with people posting at the same time. Since doing this restart, Elasticsearch hasn't given any more trouble.

Takes about 60s for it to come up so going by the time you saw the above, it'd been back online in 6 seconds.

Has the forum gone back to shrinking images again? As I notice that pictures in several threads have become smaller.

Posted

Yeah it looks like it's reverted it's image settings back to 800x800 thumbnails. No idea why it likes to revert the settings sometimes. Stupid software. I've put it back.

That update time again. Looks like this is a security update this time.

Any objections if I whizz this on tonight in at around 7:30pm? Should take no more than 30mins and likely will be quicker. I'll ping a message on here when done.

I have problems today. The site is slow and several times this has happened.

Screenshot2024-11-2517_01_40.thumb.png.fd6c50f94adc2af645a3b7c2af1765a0.png

And this.

Loading images can also be challenging. And occasionally this happens.

An when reload the page, this happens again.

Uploading photos from me can also be difficult and may take several attempts.

Editing the post above also took several tries.

So things are really broken today.

I know we spoke about me running diagnostics last time round, but it’s all fine here, so nothing to actually check. 😅

Can you do a traceroute to forum and ping it for a while? See if some hops are not responding right or something?

EDIT: Looking at Cloudflare status all seems good on their end in Norway as well.

Are we running some sort of blacklisting server side? IP range allowlist? @SiC

No idea what this is unfortunately.

But it's strange that it's only me who has problems.

I've not had any problems, and wonder if it's something country-specific to you?

Can start to wonder if it is.

And it's been fine for quite a while now. So it comes and goes. Weird.

No nothing for http/https traffic. Forum software has a few IP address blocks from over a decade ago probably from previous bans. Might clear them out. However I'd expect a warning to come up with a forum page saying that address is blocked rather than randomly cutting out.

To me it seems for whatever reason Norway Cloudflare to France Scaleway has connection issues.

That’s what I’m thinking. Because all the traffic is going through Cloudflare, instead of getting an address block it just doesn’t respond to Cloudflare’s request.

If IP’s are not in the range, might be worth lobbing a ticket to both Scaleway and Cloudflare so they check e2e connectivity.

Having not done it frequently enough for me to have really noticed, as of yesterday the forum has started doing the opening a new page scrolled right to the bottom thing again.  Which is Really Sodding Annoying...Happening both on desktop (Firefox) and phone (Chromium variant), so I don't *think* the issue would be at my end, unless it's something really odd going on stored in my session settings or something.

I get that too, very occasionally. Seems more likely to be pic-heavy threads - on Android fone & windows PC

I have no idea what your on about :)

but jokes aside, if you highlight a post with a quote in it like so

image.thumb.png.5be956f253c4d17fb6d6414648bd1a0d.png

it well give you a "quote selection" and let you do a nested quote, you can also move quotes about inside the editor using the little square with 4 arrows in it in the corner like so

image.png.d29919146f8d3ef697f613622bbbc6ce.png

which is how I made the 5 tiered monstrosity above :)

BUT be careful how you create nested quotes and the order and many in which you do them, especially those which have images in them, because when you then click "expand" things can get quite broken otherwise!

Always make sure when doing nested quotes with images in them that you fully expand the quoted message first *before* highlighting to quote it

A question about the editor layout when using mobile - is there any way to put the editing tools below the box, rather than at the top? Slightly annoying if I want to put something in bold or italics, and having to go all the way back to the top to switch that option on, then again to switch it back off. I guess it's probably hardwired into the layout of the forum but I thought I'd ask!

That's a great idea. I've just looked at the settings but there is no option to unfortunately. Maybe possible to hack the stylesheets to do it but I'm always wary of doing that as it can make forum software updates more complex and break other stuff given how fragile the forum software appears to be written.

If you highlight the text first and then apply your option, you only need to go back to the top once.

I wanted to find the 'what are you watching' thread. Searched for 'watching', changed to date, no luck by page 6. Search doesn't seem the brightest.

Thanks, I've found it more easily on my PC this morning. I'd just searched for watching, kept getting results with watch and not the whole word.

Hey is there any way to have either the page load at the most recent post or even better, first unread post? When I am looking for the latest updates to really big threads such as Shite in Miniature II or the NN24, it's a bit frustrating as it loads at the top of the page and I've either got to scroll to the bottom or try and find the line that separates read from unread posts.

Clicking on the thread title should take you to first unread post, shirley? Does for me, from notifications list or unreads - though not always from search results.

Of course it does 😂 I had been clicking on the latest page number all this time!

has there been a sneaky software update thats reset the defaults again? I notice just today that the thumbnails seem to be stuck at 800 wide and the forum editor wont let me increase it

see for example the difference in thumb nail size between these 2 posts I made just today
