Galvanization will only work so long. Audi Coupe front wings are like hens teeth despite being galvanized (they normally have Audi 80 wings on which have a slightly different line up to the door/windscreen). Galvanization is no guarantee to protect from road salt.

 

Galvanization is by no means a protective coating. It is intended to act as the sacrificial anode in the electrochemical process of ferrous oxidation, hence it will prolong the life of the cathode (the steel sheetmetal), but when used up, the steel is left to the elements.

This also explains why galvanized cars start to rust in odd places, i.e. not necessarily places that are directly exposed to the usual causes for rust. They start where the sacrificial anode is 'eaten' away first, and that is a spot where the highest concentration of current occurs.

Once started, they can rust there even worse than non galvanized cars, since the manufacturers usually don't apply any other form of rust protection to galvanized cars.
