I made the XM smell of oil the other night buggaring about near Penn, 1st/2nd gear up hills and through massive puddles for half an hour. That's with 1997cc, doubt 1299 older cc's would be much better. Still, could buy a flat cap and drive in fuck you i'm old mode...

 

Does look deliciously miserable though. My grandad would love it, he still misses his 1.something red mk2 Merit he had in the early 90's as a work shitter.

We used to have those Astra estates as pool cars here at work back in the late eighties.

 

They were all 1.3 Merits and they all went like fuck, for what they were anyhow.

 

The prized 'borrow' though, was the Astramax 1.6 van - very rapid indeed.

1.3 Astras back then were as quick as a 1.6 Astra is now.

 

But thats not saying much apparently. I understand that the new 1.6 Disastra is dangerously underpowered from friends who have driven them?

A work mate was telling me last week how he had a 1.6 as a hire car after a recent car accident, he also reckoned it was dangerously under powered, the older shape 1.4 that I had back in 2010 certainly was bad enough.

That's nothing you should try my Mrs's new shape (read heavy) Citroen C3 with the old 8v 1.4 75bhp donk in it. It's glacial.

Oooh I bet that's nice with the manual box! Probably quite economical too, mine always changes up too high.

 

Will drive, but be rock hard if the spheres need changing. Or they are fine and it needs a hydraflush session. The fact that the spheres come with it is bargainous too, it's not a tricky job to change them, just need axle stands to hold it up whilst you lie underneath it getting a face full olf olf LHM if your unlucky.

 

Tempting, but the wrong end of the country, and there's nothing wrong with mine apart from hopefully a nackered centre sphere and the fact that being an estate thats normally run around very empty means not enough weight to make the spheres do some work.

I never found the 1.3 mk2 astra to be slow or in any way underpowered. 1.6 diesels are however unbelievably shit.
