Anecdotally BMC dabbled with putting the 'large B' lump into the Wolesley, Riley and MG variants of the Farina. Unmolested these are lovely old barges in my opinion.

A Renault 20 is massively nicerer than one of these Passats.

The Passat is a gloomy cave compared to the light and airey Renault which is also roomier, comfier, better riding, better boot (even if the rear seats fold weird), nicer power steering and much better brakes. The 2 litre Renault is a very good 4 cylinder but the 1.9 / 2.2 VW is a 5 cylinder and really quite special. (The only reason to chose Passat IMHO) 

Both cars automatics are 3 speed without lock-up. The Renault auto is much better matched to the engine, the Passat's Auto is pretty hopeless but they do have a nice manual 'box which suits the five cylinder much better.

Always irks that VW couldn't even be bothered to put the wipers on the correct side of these!

 

Anyway, Renault  20s are hard to find. There is this:

these cars are very rare to be on the road plus its a 2 door Coupe sport have a look around you wont find one MOTD being used etc

I had a Rover 800. Bodily slightly better than that one. Electrically probably worse....
