This one seems such a sad case. 800s, especially one as early as this 820e are about as common as breeding pairs of Unicorns here in Ireland. This one has been stood in a field awhile but I reckon this looks tasty tasty in this shade of gold I don't remember seeing on 800s as old as this.

 

Sadly though its probably circling the drain right now, its been advertised at €450 which is probably a little lofty for something that needs to be recommissioned BUT an offer (later welched on) of €300 was accepted. The seller seems a good skin so might be open to a keener offer for the 'right buyer'

I would TRUELY LOVE to re-home that and do things to it that others would find disturbing, like restore it, clean it up and return it to the road. Sadly, I'm out, its too far away, I've just bought a much cleaner D-reg 820e and I simply don't have the space, I'm still looking for somewhere to keep the D-reg car.

 

Whats the story with these Lord Sterling? Are rotters these early ones? I get the 820e engine might be the more approachable for home tinkering/back street mechanics or is that wrong? There is something about the clean-ness of the early ones and especially the gold colour which I seem to think of as being a more R8 colour that makes me keep thinking of it

What makes me laugh is that there's a reserve on that "Taxi"... That's not worth a tonne in scrap, let alone for a pile of shit, which frankly will disintegrate as soon as it's touched. Me thinks that'll end up being MOT'd and plate raped.

What makes me laugh is that there's a reserve on that "Taxi"... That's not worth a tonne in scrap, let alone for a pile of shit, which frankly will disintegrate as soon as it's touched. Me thinks that'll end up being MOT'd and plate raped.

Ive heard that pre 60 mot exempt stuff can no longer be plate raped,anyone know if thats true?.

Even though anything pre-1960 now no longer needs an MOT to be put onto the road, the plate can be transferred if all the usual criteria are met but it must go through an MOT for this purpose. I think this an easy way for DVLA to check the vehicle actually exists !!!

Certainly seem to be some giffer home made 'improvements' there. But cruise control?! Come on!

Quite simple to do actually with a sensor and pickup on the propshaft, and a servo motor on the throttle cable/pedal etc.

The 820e is certainly more home tinkering friendly, the 820e is a single point injection with the M16e engine and one of the rarest of the 800 range, certainly for a pre-1988.

 

The bodywork on these early cars were more prone to rust than the post 1988 cars, I would go and have a look, the fella says it was stored in a barn for 2 years, assuming the barn is dry.

 

I had a later 1990 820e for a few months, it wasn't in the best of conditions when I bought it, from cold you had to keep the revs high to keep it from cutting out until it got to temperature, it hadnt seen a proper service for at least a few years, but still, once I got it on the motorway its performance almost mimicked that of the V6, it kept up with modern traffic almost effortlessly. I'm well chuffed to have bought the D-reg 820e recently, but that wont see the road until and if the KV6 gives up.

 

The colour was only available for these up until 1988, its called 'Shantung Gold' the same colour my Dads old D-reg Sterling had. Hence why I get inexplicably excited when I see one of this colour.

Back in the '70s the home mechanic type magazines always had adverts for retro fit "upgrades" like this, for example an electric window "kit" that was basically a motor you fixed onto the stub of the manual winder handle. I can remember seeing cruise control kits that basically acted like a clamp on the throttle cable. I bet the loom is in a right 2 and 8 on this.

Correct. My Greek-German uncle used to have a FIAT 500 with such a mechanical cruise system. GR3 4 hill climbing.

This is the car that alerted me to the existence of da Brizzers, it's a very early 'Ridgebottom', KDF20 if I remember right, I tracked this baby in about 1990 to Lanesborough in the Irish Midlands while on a shite hunting expedition, took some finding but most of the natives were friendly and helpful in those days, it was resting in an engineers workshop and had sat there a long time, my memory is on form today, the chaps name was Pat Kenny, which was the same name as a mediocre radio dj of the time. This was the first time I saw an aerodyne Bristol and I near shot my bolt, it was very straight, low mileagey and complete with only minor welding needed, I tried to help the poor vanquished thing home but sadly Mr. Kenny was playing hardball, I was young and inexperienced in the art of haggling and misunderstood, with the benefit of hindsight I now know I could have taken it away for half the money in my pocket. I did call a couple of times over the years but never got any sense. Last time I saw it, the workshop had shut down and so I sought out Pats home, this was about 10 years ago, Pat was now deceased and the 401 was sat in the back yard along with most of the machinery from the workshop, a very sad sight, the car had deteriorated quite a bit but the son was planning to restore it only lacked ability, I did offer assistance in the way of manuals, advice, could source parts if needed and asked that if he decides to get rid to let me know, then around 5 years ago I saw it advertised for sale, but too late for me. Sadly it's then landed with a filthy engine rapist tosser who hasn't even left it as a rolling shell, most likely it's sweet little motor now powers a kit car looking shitbox used for some mega boring old fart racing that makes the old oval look appealing.

 

I do have a front suspension that would get it rolling, only 6 bolts, I wonder what the reserve is? NO! must resist.
