When they say slamming it is a 10 minute job, do they mean cutting a hydrolastic line and watch it sink onto the floor.

Just take the valve cores out, or in SiC's case just wait for it to deflate on it's own.

They probably mean leaving it on the floor where it presumably is by now....

Jo, don't let stuff like this upset you too much - its just somebody adding what they consider to be more "appeal" to what is basically a scrap car.   I am completely with you on the lowering thing, though.   Just fuck off is my usual response to the suggestion...

All that said even if it is lowered its another one saved that in a couple of years would become a spares car. Better than it going to the scrappy and crushed

Meh.

I used to get sniffy about stuff like this.  Then I had the epiphany.

"Who does it hurt?".

Yes, I'd prefer every Ford Sierra didn't have a whale tail and alloys whilst also harbouring all of the sporting ability of a drunk nun, but then I'm quietly confident every 'cozzeh' driver would like to tell me (correctly) that it's MY car that looks shit.

Someone cuts the springs? Whatever.

Jazzy wheels get added?? Shame there's no way that you can - you know - replace them at a later stage.

There's a delicious irony here.  Shiters judging others tastes when, frankly, ours will always be worse.

I hadn't realised Lincoln had it's own microclimate!

Does it have an MOT or doesn't it?

Yes

I am not sure leaving something original makes it worse or means we have worse taste.

Would driving a hydralastic car on the stops cause damage I wonder?

There was a Renault 12 on Facebook recently, slammed (and with awful wheels in my view) which is obviously the owners right and yes they can be returned to original but what I can't understand is why do it, what do you gain? Renault 12's were known for their ride quality, it is part of the cars character and typically that of French cars of the period, now you are going to feel every pothole and in my opinion ruin the character of the car. And it may make it harder to sell in the future and then it gets scrapped or left to rot.

I admit I am a purist and am not a fan of slamming or rat, for me it is like fitting plastic windows to a 17th century house, another bug bear of mine! Maybe I am just grumpy.

Different strokes for different folks.

Every single car company spend millions on R&D.  Leroy from Rochford isn't claiming he knows more about suspension or ride comfort; he knows his mates cars are also lowered and that lowering has been part of the scene for over 40 years now.

Honestly, I wouldn't let it wind you up.  I see this every day on Facebook when people see a decaying car "Wy wud u let dis happen" and I often want to reply "Just to annoy you"

I used to know someone* who lowered mk3 and 4 escorts to the bumpstops. Every year or so he'd scrap one as the chassis rails had cracked.

* actually not me in this story

I remember seeing a matt black maxi at a show once that looked like it had been lowered, asked him and he just said all the gas had escaped

Yes

An MOT, but leaking lines, and no reverse gear.

Excellent.

I might have a bid...

It doesn't really wind me up, I won't dwell on it for hours, I just don't like to see it, but that is me, obviously many others would agree as you say different strokes for different folks. When I had my lovely green Maxi I was told a few times it would look better lowered and to fit banded wheels or whatever they are called so it does also happen the other way, although not so much.

But yes better to see it in use than rotting on a driveway.

I wonder if he drew a correlation between the two?

Same thing happened with Cortinas. Lowered an poly bushed then they would crack the rails.

Im not saying don't modify stuff, but don't 'stupidly' modify stuff.

In a similar vein, and going back to the complaint made by the Joloke in the original post, I have been looking for a horse trailer, preferably a shite old Rice horse trailer, to use as, surprisingly, a horse trailer. Why then, do most of the ones I see on fleabay are listed as being for conversion* to ‘catering trailers’ with silly starting prices to match... ??

That happened when business rates went astronomical, so people started to look at catering trailers.  Then because people were looking at catering trailers, the cost of them went astronomical.  So people looked at old 'Oss Boxes.  And now people are doing that and charging a mint for them.

Everybody with half a brain knows that a car that had its suspension removed is going to be destroyed in no time at all.

The shocks from the undulations of the road have to go somewhere and if there is no suspension, they go directly into the structure, which isn't designed to deal with them.

Hence reverting to standard doesn't fix anything. The car is fucked.

I don't know what the legal aspect in the UK is, but in most EU countries major modifications to the suspension system invalidate the vehicle type approval, unless the modifications were made with type approved components. In the UK they at the very least invalidate the historic status of a car registered as historic.

I would not want to get hit by a car with owner modified suspension, since his heap might be illegal to operate on HM's highway and the insurance might be void.

Apart from that, the shocks transmitted to the driver and passengers of a suspensionless car have severe implications on their health.

I'm not inconsiderably miffed that I then have to pay for their premature pensions.

It's not a "little fella", it's a machine...No more, no less.

If someone wants to buy it and chop the springs (not applicable to that ad, obvs), where's the harm? - I spent a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon in the company of fellow shiters and their cars, two of which were gloriously lived-in examples of their type (the cars...), but had non-standard exhausts, seats, audio systems etc. Are they also a cause for sadness?

I think it was probably more the ford rot that weakened the structure the lowering bought it to light

Somebody thinks differently/likes different things to you, so automatically they are wrong and deserve their legs chopping off?

Bravo, great thread.

My Chevette Estate adopted the opposite pose after I renewed the front springs, it took a good few months to settle a bit and it still looked like it had been lifted for off roading!

A bit OTT, its just us expressing opinions. But you're the mod so ban us all, then you'll have the forum you want but without any contributors.

My MR2 was lowered by 30mm by the PO. I still have all my fillings, my brain hurts no more than normal, and I still massively enjoy driving it reasonably hard. Oh, and I’m in my 40’s, not late teens.

Is I a chav?
