Clanger Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 What's in it? What's in it?! I'm so excited!Careful now Herr TEH Junkman, you might get accused of making with those negative vibes man... Junkman 1
Junkman Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 Oh. It's just a stick. #negative vibes PhilA 1
PhilA Posted February 15, 2019 Author Posted February 15, 2019 Doesn't the Poncho need eight of them to ignite the air/fuel mixture in a reasonable manner?I thought you only needed candles to start a diesel? Phil Junkman 1
Junkman Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 A diesel ends where we start, doesn't it? PhilA 1
PhilA Posted February 15, 2019 Author Posted February 15, 2019 Oh. It's just a stick. #negative vibesBaton gris! Junkman 1
PhilA Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 Harbor Freight 20% off coupon. Load leveller procured. Phil LightBulbFun and Junkman 2
PhilA Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 Harbor Freight 20% off coupon. Load leveller procured.PhilI got a $2 rusty particle collector dish and a load leveler. Probably need to not use the full length of the chains. But, this is good. Getting somewhere now. Phil Junkman, tooSavvy, Dan_ZTT and 10 others 13
PhilA Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 First order of the day was to find a good place to support the vehicle. Partway down the chassis turned out to not be a good place as the weight of the engine made it all flex. Engine mounts at the front undone. Crossbrace out. Moderately clean up underneath. Apart from at the back of the gearbox. There's spider webs. That there is probably still full of Regrettable Examples. Next up, get under there with a brush and a light and clear the way. Phil Junkman, egg, LightBulbFun and 8 others 11
PhilA Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 Also, another pair of hands and a couple more axle stands would be good. I have now remembered why working around a lowered car can be a pain. LightBulbFun 1
PhilA Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 It's less bad under here than I had thought. Currently just cleaning the underbody. Last thing I want is a spider to decide to drop on me when I have nowhere to escape quickly. About to pull the propshaft off the back flange so I can rotate it and get the Hardy-Spicer up front undone. Phil Junkman, LightBulbFun, mrbenn and 2 others 5
PhilA Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 Marked the prop for location. Removed prop. Jacked front end of car. ATF starts pissing out the tailshaft. Test fit the crane and load leveler. It's taking the load. Now to undo the speedo drive and rear mounts. Phil scdan4, Exiled_Tat_Gatherer, Rocket88 and 8 others 11
PhilA Posted February 16, 2019 Author Posted February 16, 2019 It's bleeeeeeding! Crane! Biiiiig engine. Tiny grbx. Phil somewhatfoolish, egg, SiC and 33 others 36
bigstraight6 Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 Good work Phil, it looks like a lorry engine now it’s out of the car.. egg, PhilA, mrbenn and 1 other 4
mrbenn Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 Doesn't it! Looks like it weight an absolute ton. LightBulbFun, PhilA and egg 3
LightBulbFun Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 20190216_171504.jpgIt's bleeeeeeding! 20190216_171451.jpgCrane! 20190216_172309.jpgBiiiiig engine. Tiny grbx. Phil Cool stuff! love how big the engine looks in comparison to the gearbox, usually the gearbox is longer then the engine PhilA and mrbenn 2
LightBulbFun Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 it does remind me, I know the plan is to do up the gearbox, but do ya have any plans to do anything to the engine while its out of the car? (since I imagine access to various bits will be a lot easier)
PhilA Posted February 17, 2019 Author Posted February 17, 2019 I think I might take the head off, inspect the bores, check things, reset the tappets. I might paint it the correct color too Phil Junkman and LightBulbFun 2
SiC Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 Bloody hell that's big. Looks like it fell out of a warship. Is that gearbox actually small or does it look small as it's attached to such a long engine? PhilA 1
beko1987 Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 Oh wow, well done! That engine looks half the length of my 406! PhilA 1
purplebargeken Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 Fuck me that's big. PhilA and LightBulbFun 2
PhilA Posted February 17, 2019 Author Posted February 17, 2019 Bloody hell that's big. Looks like it fell out of a warship. Is that gearbox actually small or does it look small as it's attached to such a long engine? It's about the same size as a Borg-Warner 65. It is merely dwarfed by the engine. Sitting on the floor it makes you say "damn, that's a big engine" every time you set eyes on it. Junkman, LightBulbFun and mrbenn 3
PhilA Posted February 17, 2019 Author Posted February 17, 2019 Pulled a piece of peeling paper off the side of the gearbox. You don't get data plates like that any more! Looks like it's the original gearbox to the car, 51- stamped. Phil Exiled_Tat_Gatherer, mercedade, egg and 11 others 14
Rocket88 Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 Close relative..saw this today...... mrbenn, Junkman, Exiled_Tat_Gatherer and 4 others 7
PhilA Posted February 17, 2019 Author Posted February 17, 2019 That's the overrider set mine should have. However, I prefer mine without, I think they make the front end too fussy. Phil LightBulbFun and purplebargeken 2
Rocket88 Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 Tend to agree with you...not sure about the Fulton visor either.........
PhilA Posted February 18, 2019 Author Posted February 18, 2019 I like the visor. That one there just needs to be painted the same color as the roof and not let be rusty.
PhilA Posted February 21, 2019 Author Posted February 21, 2019 Further investigation shows that: 1) There is a pressed tin lower cover for the flywheel to protect the starter ring from damage by flying debris. Just not on mine because some mouthbreather decided they knew better than the designers at General Motors.2) The correct shade of green is available at great cost from a specialist. Eyeballing it, I'm going to call it Brunswick Green. Nobody knows* what color the gearbox should be so it'll probably go gray again. I've been battling a cold/sniffles/man-flu type deal since Saturday afternoon. Beginning to feel better, just in time for a week of rain. Phil *The anoraks can't agree on a color dome, LightBulbFun, SiC and 2 others 5
Sir Snipes Posted February 21, 2019 Posted February 21, 2019 That's not an engine bay it's a plant room! tooSavvy, PhilA and LightBulbFun 3
PhilA Posted February 23, 2019 Author Posted February 23, 2019 I have two words for the previous engine builder: Torque Wrench. Big collection of head bolts, most of which are due replacement. Need to get a tap too, so I can chase the holes in the block clean. Initial glance at the head reveals nothing major. What looks like a moderately recent head gasket. Deck looks okay All the pistons are marked forty thou' over, so it's had a rebuild at some point for sure. Couple of the pots have hone marks, the rest are pretty mirrored. Procured a very old dusty can of protection grease. Coated everything to stop it rusting. More to come. Phil tooSavvy, Tickman, LightBulbFun and 14 others 17
LightBulbFun Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 I think this is the first time iv seen a side valve/flat head engine with the head off in detail, its been quite interesting to study it all the head really does not do much does it? LOL PhilA 1
