Also, you're gonna love this. I remembered a truck from my youth - it was getting on a bit then, but there were a few on the road in the early 80s. It had a curved bit of glass below the windscreen on each corner. Could I find out what it was? Could I buggery.

 

Mrs_Pillock found it, when given the brief "It's like an old delivery truck with curved windows on the front corners" within 3 minutes. Leyland FG.

It feels too old, but this is on a T plate and I'm a 70s kid so probably about right.

 

 

I notice Boris is trying to convince hauliers using the London streets to angle-grind a hole in the nearside door of their wagons and put a window in for visibility of cyclists. He's about 40 years late to the party!

It's a 1971 Stutz Blackhawk. It lived on well into the Eighties in various incarnations and lost the split screen on the way, I don't know exactly when.

It's the last Exner styled car that went into production ever.

Known to those of us of more mature years as a Thruppenny Bit, not to be confused with the Cockerney rhyming slang Thruppenny Bits.

I think it's either the Japanese or the Americans who are the weird glazing champions, if you ignore most coach built French cars and commercials of the 1960's.

Though aesthetically quite ordinary, the rear window of an AX is glazically interesting, in that it's a structural part of the tailgate:

 

 

 

I suppose also the front quarterlight on the 3-dr is sort of interesting too, so as to allow the door pocket to hold a bottle of vino.

VW Up (etc.) has a different take by having a conventional hatch back that's glazed over all the way to the bumper.  And yes, this is the worst colour I could find one in.

 

While we're on the subject of weird rear glass hatches, as pedestrian as the rest of the glazing is, the Rover 75 Tourer does have this odd opening rear window arrangement.  It's ideal for letting you in the load area when the lock inevitably stops working.  Bizarrely, this was the only photograph of it open I could find.  A surprising number of owners don't even know their Tourer does this.

Peugeot RCZ, possibly the only production car with glazed roof cleavage.  It's like an Audi TT with the arse on the outside (sorry SiC).

Crosley.  What even?  The only production car ever built that has literally no good angles.  The windows are a design marvel in that every single one is wrong.

 

No matter what, these Rambler wagons always look bent.

 

Estates can be very difficult to get right.  That's why it's usually best to just glue a bit of old greenhouse on the back and hide it with vinyl.

 

Or get an experienced coachbuilder to knock something up with reasonable proportions.

 

The last thing you want is for people to think you just chopped up a regular saloon car and used whatever glazing was the nearest fit.

It's the most adventurous and hideous piece of automotive glazing I'm aware of and has absolutely no redeeming features.

R8s. The almost- wraparound glass, minimal pillars and glass sunroof make for an extremely welcoming and airy interior. They did the black wraparound thing before the Bini did, and to much better effect (Bini pillars are huge on the inside).

It's got that funny little window in the door for when they've not thought things through properly.

It's not clear from this picture, and how should I know, we only have one in the family, that I last drove on Saturday and put shopping in.
