stonedagain Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 The windscreen scuttle plastics are such a lash up, at least the ECU is well guarded. When the scuttle fills with water, it overflows past the pollen filter housing into the passenger footwell. The CCM in under the passenger carpet.......
Lacquer Peel Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 When the scuttle fills with water, it overflows past the pollen filter housing into the passenger footwell. The CCM in under the passenger carpet.......I'm going to keep an eye on it. Terrible design. WTF. I never actually got round to servicing it but the screwdriver?! Hilarious and scaryIt looks like it was there for a long time, long enough for the sound deadening material to detach and fall on top of it.
Lacquer Peel Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Halfords advanced ftw.My socket set? It's an ex-Richard Lidl Ian Advanced* set, it's excellent.
Tayne Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Leave the scuttle panel blocked, it’ll weigh more when you bridge it. Lacquer Peel, CGSB, Cavcraft and 3 others 6
loserone Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 My socket set? It's an ex-Richard Lidl Ian Advanced* set, it's excellent. No, the screwdriver! Lacquer Peel 1
Lacquer Peel Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 Derp. That's better. The replacement facelift B5 Passat vents had been affected by VAG "Project Drive", no backlit icons. I think it needs a driveshaft and an alternator but it's running fine for now. At least wonky vents are easy to fix. HMC 1
Jim Bell Posted July 16, 2018 Author Posted July 16, 2018 How did you fix it man? Change the whole unit?
Lacquer Peel Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 How did you fix it man? Change the whole unit?Aye only about a tenner on eBay. You can change the vents on their own but I'm too hamfisted to deal with brittle and finicky VAG plastic. Jim Bell 1
Burnside Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 Sorry to read about the screwdriver, it's not mine or my Grandads but maybe the garage who did the cambelt for us prehaps? I can go and have word with them if needed next time I'm passing. Nice one on the vent fix was on the to do list along with replacing the scuttle panel but could never could find one local. All the best with the Passat and look forward to seeing any future updates. Lacquer Peel 1
SiC Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 That foam insulation fell to bits on our 2010 A4 a couple of years ago. I don't know if you can blame the screwdriver for that, just crappy VAG parts.
Lacquer Peel Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 This thing always felt like it was a bit sluggish, not giving its all, there's a flat spot at 2000rpm where there shouldn't be one at all. I bought a cheap length of silicone hose and set about replacing the vacuum hoses and injector leak offs. Can you use silicone for leak offs? The old foosty vacuum hoses. New ones in place. Buried down there is a homage to Citroen, the brake vacuum booster looks a lot like an accumulator sphere. Anyway it seems transformed, less languid at low revs and smoother acceleration. Cheap fix. Lacquer Peel Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 Oooh, a cliffhanger!...I sneakily edited the post. Uploading images on Tapatalk, it's hard to format posts correctly the first time round. Jim Bell 1
Shirley Knott Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 Good craic RE eradicating flat spots. Silicone hoses aren't rated for fuel IIRC, specific hoses probably needed although FWIW I'm using them for the crankcase breather on the Volvo, they're not technically rated for oil vapour either but seem to be holding up ok. Jim Bell Posted July 24, 2018 Author Posted July 24, 2018 Have you made it faster, for free?! Winning. Lacquer Peel 1

Jim Bell Posted August 4, 2018 Author Posted August 4, 2018 Raising property values in Midlothian earlier today. But which ones faster? Richard 1
Richard Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 We did test both of them on the same route, I think the Volvo was a bit quicker. Jim Bell 1
Jim Bell Posted August 4, 2018 Author Posted August 4, 2018 We did test both of them on the same route, I think the Volvo was a bit quicker. That sounds about right. Both are worthy chariots though. Burnside and Richard 2
Lacquer Peel Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 The Volvo is comfier and quicker but you need to rev it, which is alien to me. The Volvo makes a lovely noise, it reminds me of my old Audi coupé. Jim Bell and Richard 2
Lacquer Peel Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 The Passat is plodding away nicely and generating some amazing MPG figures on the readout when driven carefully. (Spuriousness level UNSURE) Even if it's 10% off it's still impressive. It's still whining, possibly from a drive belt, possibly from the clutch release bearing. I haven't had enough free time to investigate. One of the hubcaps has lost its VW badge. Weren't they bought new? I guess they are quite old with old glue. What I did have time to do was clean the MAF sensor with rubbing alcohol. You can see the sensor part and a bit of soot on it in one of the pictures. It was worth doing as it seems to go even better without stour on the sensor. loserone, Richard, Sigmund Fraud and 6 others 9
Lacquer Peel Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 72.4!!! Holy shamoley. Thats good going. If it hadn't been for traffic at Perth it would have been closer to 75 mpg. Jim Bell, solid61 and The Moog 3
Lacquer Peel Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 I didn't realise our own Lord Sterling had owned this car. There is a whine I've mentioned before, I think I've narrowed it down to the pilot bearing which is a gearbox off job. Ignore at my peril? The special-ish tools to remove the driveshaft haven't arrived yet, the CV joint really isn't happy now. Otherwise the car is plodding away nicely. GrumpiusMaximus, Lord Sterling, Dirk Diggler and 3 others 6
binhoker668 Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 Well now Mr Pineapple, if you pm me yer address, I'll post ye a new center badge. Hell, I'll send ye two if ye want.... Burnside and Lacquer Peel 2
Lacquer Peel Posted August 21, 2018 Posted August 21, 2018 Cheers man! Any ideas on the pilot bearing autoshite hive mind? Burnside 1
Lacquer Peel Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 The Passat has been running as slow as an SDI recently and showing a 00553 MAF wiring fault, the first time I disturbed the plug it fell to bits and it's been falling apart even more since so that was my first port of call. Destroying the old plug was the easiest way to release the wiring. Wiring diagram and new plug. Anyway, it's still showing the 00553 code, I guess the wire tails need to be replaced. Fuck this modern shit. Cavcraft 1
Lord Sterling Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 I didn't realise our own Lord Sterling had owned this car. Lol. I've sent ya PM Wish I spent more time with my Passat when I had it. I quite liked it and am still looking at the Passat in a 'I fancy another one' way.
Lacquer Peel Posted October 9, 2018 Posted October 9, 2018 Lol. I've sent ya PM Wish I spent more time with my Passat when I had it. I quite liked it and am still looking at the Passat in a 'I fancy another one' way. It's a good car but I can't get too enthusiastic about it, it's been reliable and it sips fuel but I find it a bit stodgy. Itching for something else already. Lord Sterling and loserone 2
