Folks, I don't think it's productive to apportion blame as to why the car was left where it was.

I'm guessing the owner was knackered after a busy weekend & bad driving conditions on the return journey, and is now totally gutted that they made what has turned out to be a wrong decision.

Very unfortunate to have your lovely old mowta nicked, but dare I say very naive to leave it in a lay by on a trailer thinking it'll still be there when you return the next day.

The absurdity of the situation being that if they had unloaded the Model A and just left it in the layby and taken the trailer away unladen, there's a far greater chance it would have still been there the next day.

Or left the towcar and the trailer in the layby and driven home in the Model A - I would imagine they're reasonably capable in the snow.

I feel this is out of the country by now sadly, Ford Model A's are rare vehicles, and it will be a too hot to handle commodity here in the UK, and far easier to shift on overseas, yes it was a bit naive of them to leave the trailer where it was, but c'est la vie

I blame the weather.

The Sunday part of the competition was cancelled due to the snow. Since this event has been held closeby it has been a real treat to see these cars on the roads here, between hills/ tests. So much more interesting to see cars like this "in the wild" and filthy than polished up and on display.

Fingers crossed for that Ford to turn up soon.

I don't know, we've got to assume it's an opportunistic trailer theft so it's doubtful the thief would have the first clue about exporting a rare old car, or any contact abroad to get it to. I think most likely it'll turn up dumped soon enough, just hopefully not too badly damaged when it does.

Okay, I was being slightly facetious, but only slightly. The world would be a much better place if we could leave things unattended, but we can't, and the owner really should have known better. Ironically, a Model A would be a perfect car for a snowy road, much better, I'm sure, than whatever the tow car was.

I'm sure it was the trailer that was the target and the car will turn up. It is relatively low value, parts are not worth anything (because every single component is available off the shelf new) and (sweeping generalisation ahead) the people who have them tend to be generally 'on the level' so I doubt it would be easy to shift, even in component form.

FWIW Model As are not 'rare' cars at all. I think the conservative estimate is 50,000 still on the road and in regular use (with probably twice that number in bits or awaiting rescue), so significantly more common than a Morris Minor or MGB...

Anyway, I hope it gets found safe and sound, like

Fuck me, some of you lot are bitter little people. The type that would be straight round an elderly neighbour's house who had fallen down the stairs to laugh and point and shout 'why didn't you pick your feet up more you stupid old goat'/'your slippers were too baggy, it serves you right you're in agony' etc.

'Why didn't they just turn round and go home?' - Aye right, cos snow/bad weather only ever occurs where you are heading to, never where you have come from.

'Why didn't they continue/go slower?' - Perhaps they were more concerned about the safety of other road users and decided not to tow a laden trailer in treacherous conditions they were not comfortable driving in.

As my old RE teacher used to tell me, if you haven't got anything nice/useful to say just fuck off.

Bit harsh.

I think a number of us just think there should be a 'reality check' here that leaving an unsecured trailer in a layby with a precious vintage car on it for 24hrs in any circumstances is hopelessly naive -  sad though it is to say.

And we're going round in circles... again.  Pointless.
