Cresta, an update.

That is a lot of treasure.  It's slightly worrying that there were no spiders at all in there.

You may want but ,if you can find one, not impossible, they ain't cheap.

Yeah, that's the problem. I've had two PC Crestas and they cost me about a grand combined. As much as I'd love another they're a bit rich for my tastes nowadays. There was a midnight blue Viscount on Faceache back in February up in Norfolk back in February but it must have sold quickly, I was on it faster than flies on a dog turd and was still too slow. They're lovely old things though and as Wuv has said, with a decent 3.3 they absolutely fly when you prod the pedal. Sweet sounding old lump too.

Yeah they tend to go pretty quick. Viscounts are super rare. Howmany says there are none on the road or on sorn.

Any chance of a link to the ad ? As to the sound I agree. Twin exhausts for another win.

My old Viscount...

I'd love another!

Mr Southall, my favourite junior school teacher, had many fine vehicles, the best of which was a '68 Viscount. I was the only geek in the 3rd year at Somers Park Junior (1975) who knew what it was.

Yeah I remember, my Ventora was £500 or so. It's one of the few I regret selling although I'm

buggered if I can remember what happened to it.

Sorry, I'm not on Faceache so can't provide a link. The same car was on ebay about ten days later with the exact same photos but was pulled shortly before that auction was due to end. It was a dark blue (Indigo, I believe), registered on a Surrey plate and on a K.

Part.

After a bit of a rub down I threw red lead about. Nice tide line, eh ?

This was my first, pictures taken in February 1998. Rotten as shit, I never should have bothered but we're all young and foolish at some stage, right? About ten years later I saw it built, painted and ready to roll in the pits at the Mildenhall pre-70 but it never left the trailer as it apparently wouldn't run properly. Ironic I thought, as it always ran beautifully during my time with it. Also, as an aside, they're usually shit for bangers as they usually snap off at the A-pillar.

Part ?

I'm not sure what to do paint/colour wise with it. I can't afford a full body job and respray, and I don't want

something just to take to shows.  I want to take it to Tescos or hey diddle Lidl, other brands are available, and

not have to worry about some a/hole banging their door into it.  Just like my 305. My spannerman says red

lead it all over and then get some bits of pin striping to accentuate parts. He reckons with the chrome

bumpers, and the bonnet and grill black,  it would look kinda cool. I trust my spannerman 100% because

he really knows what he's doing and is not a purist. There is a time and place for that if you have a Ferrari

or the like. My man likes the used look and I agree with that. I'll have to think about it, although

it is a cheap option.

What does the massiv, of all lands, think.

Personally I'd go for grey primer all over, but red oxide could work too.. Fuck the black bonnet but that's just my opinion

I feel red oxide all over might need to be broken up a bit. Grey sounds ok. I did wonder about matt black as well.

Initially I considered a clear coat  to keep the crap/dog look and rock up at a Cresta gathering to really piss off the

purists but would I ? Possibly.

If your goal is to keep the metal from dissolving rather than winning pots to piss in, I'd recommend some sort of enamel paint, the sort you can roller or brush on.  Dacrylate's Implamel is surprisingly good, I did my old Mk2 Polo in it with a brush and the result was really quite good, especially considering the minimal cost.  Very tough finish too.  You won't get that show shine finish, but it'll be perfectly servicable and does a great job of keeping the rust at bay.  Colour choices are a bit limited if you want something fancy or specific, if you're after something fairly plain that's not an issue.

Rustoleum is also decent, I've used that on the Princess.  A smoother finish is easier to achieve with the rattle cans, though it's a lot more pricey a route than the Dacrylate and with some colours you need to put lacquer on if you want to stop it going flat when the car is parked outdoors.  The Dacrylate has the advantage of being brush on and controllable so you hardly need to mask anything off to apply it since it's not that messy, it's surprisingly low odour too.

EDIT: Took about 5 litres to do the Polo in Dacrylate Implamel.  Slow dry time was the only real issue with it, though that did help level out the brush work extremely well for a nice finish.

The carb has been changed from a Zenith to a Webber, an upgrade I believe. There is also a

Zenith in the parts department.

That sounds right up my street. Without trying to blow my own bugle I do a fair amount of brush painting

and have coach painted a couple of cars in the eighties which came out really good. I shall look into that.

Cheers for that.

Funny you should mention that, apparently the 3.3 is prone to porous /cracked inlet manifolds,my mate's Ventora 1 suffered badly enough with this as to eventually backfire with sufficient force as to blow one of its twin exhausts clean off (sounded absolutely magnificent afterwards.) As luck would have it both my Crestas were faultless in this respect and ran perfectly

Same mate with the Ventora had a lovely four speed 3.3 PB, bought about 2003 from a guy who'd had it since 1969. That had a home brewed conversion using a single SU from a Rover 3-litre and absolutely went like fuck, there's no other way to describe it. Isn't it funny the way memories crop back up in your mind? FAH279D, it's still out there somewhere.

There is a downside. Unfortunately the gearbox is a bit "not good".I reckon it was a donor, maybe

along with the engine, from the Viscount and is therefore the two speed Powerglide which is, to

be honest, erm, the crappest box of all the ones they put in. Later ones had the three speed which

was shit loads better.

My spanner bloke rang this evening to tell me he had found somebody selling a manual conversion

box and all the gubbins for it for, probably, less than £500, so I've gone with it. I've never had an auto

and it looks like I never will now. I very rarely sit in stop start computer traffic so a 4 speed with possible

overdrive suits me fine. My man is the biggest end of the biggest leg I know. When he gets on the case

it's full on or fuck all.

I can't remember what carb was on the Ventora I had but it went bloody well. Mine was an F plate and yeah just from hearing this

running took me back to then. Aah, nostalgia is a powerful thing. It sells also.

Go for it!  Four speed floor change was one of two possible transmissions I didn’t get to own, although I did have a go in one and surprise surprise, it went like shit off a polished shovel. The one pictured above was three on the column and would smoke a tyre without batting an eyelid, my second was a three speed auto and did much the same without the drama and the stripe down the road.

The manuals were very few coz it was basic and who lusts after a basic apart from here ? The single headlight, basic, are very rare.

I'm delighted to see anything happening with it and thanks for bringing some memories bubbling back to the surface. Much as my main automotive love is six cylinder BMC Farinas, PC Crestas are a close second. You're right about the single headlight base models, I've only ever seen three in the metal. This one used to knock about Essex but I've not seen it for about eighteen months now.

Well, thanks for stirring up some memories anyway. Whatever you do with it I approve as long as it lives to see another day

This is my friend's Ventora, has a 3.0 Capri carb on it. He's had it years and shares a garage with his ex-Met police 66 Jag

That looks bloody good so I looked it up. I did like the fact it was ideal for waste skips. Ha ha. Sounds about right.

Not sure if I want it looking as good as yours. I'm after the "not giving too much of a shit" look.

Dacrylate say its  fast drying but you reckon it's slow. I iz a bit confuzzed, which is not unusual.
