Looks like we're going to view replacements for my friends Mondeo later today, he's had a 3rd child 🙄

Mondeo is now quite tight with them and their dog, so he's been browsing £1500 bigger cars and he has some 2011 Qashqai and Peugeot 5008 1.6hdi he wants to look at (both at the same place)

https://www.theaa.com/used-cars/cardetails/6-3080785

I'm staying mostly out of any recommendations, but I'll help him do a thorough service of whatever we buy (especially a 1.6 prince 😬)

Our vague current plan is hoping that somewhere takes his mondeo in part ex for scrap money. He's been coy about doing any work on it for a while now and now I know why (he should have a 3rd child already but sadly the little chap didn't make it, so there's some history here. I unknowingly rang him when he was doing his "oh fuck" hospital dash many years ago and i still hear that call now in my head sometimes 😢) but he is right that there's now zero point putting the £3/400 into the mondeo , it's been a good donkey for a year and probably 15k+ with fuck all maintenance performed.

I'm gonna put my dirty clothes on ready to lie under the qq and test it's boot floor corners 😂

A £1500 car could end up being worse than spending £400 on the mondeo. Unfortunately it's one major failure and then scrap territory.

It could, but it's done!

This was on our test drive of it.

Unbeknownst to me, the mondeo started making an awful noise in drive a few days ago. We think the power steering pump as the clutch felt fine. Went away above 55/60 but is loud as fuck below that! And it's not big enough for him now. He's done nothing to it since we bought it, no tyres, servicing or etc and it hurt his leg to drive he said frequently where it hits the doorcard.

It wasn't even the car we went to see. There was a Scenic 2 TomTom which barely fired up and had fucked paint on every panel

PXL_20251115_133951089.jpg.ddc8a234c782fcdf7cfda43d151c5868.jpg

There was a 5008 but it's fucking massive and also looked equally a bit shit

We test drove a white Ford S class which felt fucking awful. The guy said the egr light was on and they were fixing that, then the esp light came on on the test drive! I had a go and it had zero power and the clutch felt like nothing although it was clutching.

We then saw the touran and took that out and it was far better. Clean and tidy (vs the rest), good tyres, non lipped discs, very rust free underneath. He did a deal at £1550 with his mondeo as a part ex and we drove home!

I them opened the sealed paperwork pack it had in the glove box. Local one owner car (came from maidenhead) and as we drove back I found 2 key invoices both less than 30k old, one at vw Slough at 130ish k for a new cambelt, turbo, pipes, rear brakes and other things! Then another receipt sub 25k old for a clutch and flywheel! My friend was even happier then!

It drove back fine, it pulled well and my mate is happy! We'll give it a good service next and hope it plods along.

Rip mondeo. He did 20k in it by just adding fuel, he's happy with that

Any interest in this before it gets weighed in on Friday?

Dropped an old lady off in the afternoon. I noticed this up her driveway and she said that she's getting a taxi (See sexy E7 in background) because this Mondeo had died last week and they're waiting for their new car to arrive. Thinking of here and particularly this thread, I enquired further.

It seems to me that the dreaded internal slave cylinder has shat itself, something I'm all too familiar with on my last Mk5.

She insisted on fetching her husband to talk to me, and despite having another job to go to, I spared him five minutes of my valuable time.

It's got loads of giffer scars as you can see. It's a reasonably low mileage for its year. The engine sounded sweet and silent when he started it up.

The colour and spec is exactly what would have made me rigid in the trouser area a dozen years ago.

Anyone here interested for £300?

Located Wirral.

It’s scrap. £900ish job a DMF on that.

Probably, but isn't this the home of scrapyard saves?

If it was a known quantity I’d say I’d get it done. But all things considered it’s an average example, the MOT didn't make happy reading either so to my mind it’d make a decent breaker for someone.

I had this recently on this one, very tidy one but the turbo bearings were shot, swapping the turbo on one of these without a ramp is a total fucking PITA. It had some decent parts on it and it was cheap so break it is. Moved all the good bits across to my stash and moved on the other bits I didn’t need to keep some other ones on the road.

Sad times to see so many dying at once 😢

My friend made the right choice even before the ps went though. Tyres and brakes all round, then the electrical issue and dents, exhaust repair and he just didn't like it 🤷 Loved it as an car and is over the moon with the 20k he got from it but was uncomfortable as fuck the whole time he said 😅 said he nearly took a lump hammer to the door card to try and make his knee better fit.

He's been round this morning in the touran. Bought himself a new knob and gaitor and needed a lend of some snips to do the metal band up. He's had it over to the big ethnic car wash and it looks and smells a shit ton better! He said he can budget for a tub of oil and filter on payday, I've got a week off in early December so will do an oil change and sort the handbrake out then I think it's good to go for winter!

Na fuck it they’ve had a good run. 😂 You can’t save them all.

Our's is in for it's test......

They normally don’t do THAT bad on the test, brake pipe corrosion isn’t anything like as bad as the mk3. Just the usual big car problems like worn trailing arm bushes or the smoke opacity if it’s blocked the DPF.

It dipped. Corroded rear arms.

Not the end of the world then.

No. But I won't be fixing it ( I am working and it's 2° here) - I suspect the ball ache will be all the hardware that is corroded - it will need a cutting disc. I hope the garage will take it on.

This is being advertised as a proper auto, not a Powershift... Is that a thing? I thought it was Powershift or manual at this point, I don't remember a conventional auto being offered.

Yeah some of the earlier ones were a proper automatic. Not a bad price to be fair, you can get them much cheaper but they’ve either been to the moon and back or they’re fucked. Probably overdue for a belt but that’s no big deal, to be expected on a cheap car like that.

That’s a powershift. The 2.2 gets the non PS auto box. Refined box? No. Reliable? Very much so.

That’s mental money for a prefacelift mid spec mondeo. I sold a facelift Tit X Sport (140k fsh + toys) for £1500. Cheap quick sale, yes, but would have put it up for £2500 and taken £2k anyway but a friend snapped it up instead. So deals can deffo be had. Prices are all ofer the place tbh. Private sellers wanting trade money.

I still think the mondeo, facelift TXS estate diesels particularly, are a great buy. Overlooked by the masses thinking they’re as much trouble as a Mk3 and ignored by badge snobs who pay 25% more for a german car with less spec and more problems. The boot is vast, more than a qashqai or most french SUV’s. Apart from a vehicle with a third row, i don’t think you’ll get much more space for 5+dog.

Mini rant over lol.

I have another TXS manual estate to sell on behalf of someone, 125k, 12m mot. £3k ono.

mine is now on 240k. V.pleased and no plans to change it. Also a facelift 2.2 manual TXS estate.

They’re an old car now I’d say 75% of them are on their last legs. You can as you say pick them up cheap but they tend to get neglected. I would be buy best I could find instead of scrimping about trying to find cheapest.

I 100% agree. I’ve had a few and still got a couple. Yet I find my 240k example drives better than many with half the miles. By no means triggers broom. Just looked after as I expect it to earn its keep given the mileage I do.

Shame the Mk5 wasn’t as good and this trend couldn’t have continued for another 10yrs for me in a newer model.

I think I’ll get a Mk5 next. A nicer car but just got to keep a watch out for coolant leaks etc on them - nothing any worse than you’d get on any similar vehicle. They are capable of some huge mileages. I’ve had a dozen or so over the years, they’re a good car.

Unusual I’ve never seen a low spec 2.3. Probably nigh on unsaleable now though due to tax and it’s likely thirst.

That is scrap. I have no sympathy for traders trying to sell something like that and whinge when it causes them grief.

I’d have thought pretty obvious to whoever buys it that it’s junk. Unfortunately this is why it’s difficult to find good cheap cars because of the comeback any potential buyer has. Someone (technically…) would have ‘rights’ if they bought that and it blew up a week later. In practice obviously it wouldn’t work like that but it’s just such a minefield most garages won’t get involved with cars at that price range.

Can't believe it's 20 years next year since Daniel Craig drove a MK4 in Casino Royale, his first outing as James Bond!

After paying a sizeable bill our mondeo has another ticket. Apparently guy was working on it until late last night and without oxy acetylene the hardware would never have come out.
